Companies not setup for Affiliate Marketing.... How do you approach them to market their products?

I was researching a niche for a website I just started creating. I came across so many companies and websites that offer products/services that the niche site could promote/market for them. But they do not have any sort of Affiliate Program to speak of.

How would you go about setting up some sort of relationship with those companies?
Ask them to create an affiliate program?
Steer clear because of the possible complications involved?

Tell me your opinions and ideas.

Yes, I've done that and it works.

Here's the site (awin.com) that businesses like etsy use for their affiliate networks.

Email the businesses you want to help sell their products and talk to them, worst can happen is they say "no thanks". So what, move on to the next business on your list.
  • Even if they don't have an affiliate program they may be interested in buying adspace from you or an ad in your email newsletter or fb fanpage if you have one.
  • If the product is tangible merchandise I'd look into dropshipping opportunities. If you can cut out the middle man you will make more money. If not, cold calling is still the most effective way of establishing a relationship even in the age of email.
