Brain Dead on Video Blogging

Hey Folks,

I'm just about to open my Shopify online store, and my consultant is telling me, and I agree, that rather than using typical text blogging, for this market penetration I HAVE to use video blogging to set myself apart from my competition.

My target market is primarily 18 - 45 males, upwardly mobile, have a college degree, or at least some college, making $40-50k, and trying to outfit your Man Cave. You're also a bit of a good-hearted prankster, and you love your Mom. Of course, you can be married, but don't have to be. If you have a girlfriend or wife she can get ideas on what to get you, or what you can get her.

My problem is while I'm usually a pretty creative thinker, so far I'm just holding all jokers right now. A LITTLE HELP HERE!

    Your question is too open ended

    Video blogging is a DEAD END for too many would be online entrepreneurs because they produce videos that don't get much traction on YT or FB

    Look for Forums in your Niche to see what people are discussing and questions that you can supply answers for in your Video scripts. Another useful resource is Quora where you can find a wealth of information on Niches of interest. Good Luck with your new business.

    Too large of a group.

    An 18 yr old male and a 45 year old male have very little in common. Trying to find a bridge to appeal to both will be harder than tightening up your target demo.

    P.S. To make it crystal clear, the 45 yr old could easily be the father of the 18 yr old.

        You are arguing from the most superficial level possible. Yes, they buy from the same category. But that's about as superficial as it gets.

        We'll use cars as the example:

        An 18 yr old and a 45 yr old male both buy cars. But, on average, they don't buy the same brand or model of car. Nor do they buy for the same exact reasons.

        Does that make sense?

        18-45 encompasses 3 generations: Post-Millennial, Millennial, and Gen X.

        They grew up very differently.

        They respond very differently.

        They live very different lives.

        Go ahead target all 3. See if that even gets you "break even" conversions.

        I don't aim for break-even.

        YMMV.

        P.S. On average, a 45 yr old dad just doesn't buy the same car as his 18 yr old son. The data, verifiable data, doesn't even come close to backing that up. They rarely drink the same brand of beer when out with friends. They usually don't date the same women. Dad might like golf and his son thinks it's the most boring thing in the world, he prefers basketball or BMX or whatever.

        Millenials and Gen X, who are one generation apart, already have very different habits and criteria when buying cars.

        Which include:
        • Reason for buying
        • Brands they buy
        • Length of time they plan to own
        • Etc
        • Etc.
        Pretty much everything I post, I can back up with experience, data, citations, etc.

        Can you say the same?

        I won't feed trolls, so no more links.

        But simple searches about Millennials vs Gen X in buying behavior across categories show that if you go that broad?

        Good luck burning time and money.

        Even network television doesn't go that broad with their demographic targeting.

        They go 18-34; 35-49; etc, etc. And that's with tens of millions in marketing behind them, folks with 30-40 yrs experience, etc, etc.

    What are the pain points of your audience?


    What problems are heavy on their minds?


    What critical needs or solutions are they seeking?


    ". . . trying to outfit your Man Cave," IMO, is not a pressing need, lacks urgency and emotional response.


    Also, you said your target market was 18-45 year old males. This would suggest that you also need to be marketing to ladies: "If you have a girlfriend or wife she can get ideas on what to get you, or what you can get her."


    IMO, your targeting needs some further work.

    Those guys you explain aka target....what do they want?

    Sit down now. Grab a pen and paper. Or cyber type. Build a list of 50 plus wants. Create videos based on this list. The video topics sit in the minds of your ideal customers, according to what they want, what problems they want solved, etc.
