If we drive traffic with only Google Adwords or Facebook Ads and without email marketing or list building, can we achieve positive ROI?

Are you seriously asking this question on a marketing forum? You achieve a positive ROI by making more than you spend, regardless of the method.

    Sure you can.

You can also win a round of golf using a baseball bat, a shovel and a hoe. But why would you, if you had the chance to use tools designed for the purpose?

If you have the chance, watch the guys hustling kitchen gadgets on the boardwalk or at the fair. They make a positive ROI or they don't eat, and none of them builds a list. It's purely a one-off sale. On the other hand, sites like Williams-Sonoma make a lot more by building lists and going for multiple sales over time.

    Guess who makes more money?

    InternetMarketingMadeEZ,

Well, are you inferring or implying the only way to make a ROI is by driving traffic?

I think you are really asking if there are other ways to make an ROI without traffic? In this context you are referring to different types of web traffic.

The answer is yes, but not in the same context that you mean. Example is advertise your website offer on T.V. or Radio only, i.e. not the internet. Search engines are fairly quick at seeing sites with traffic, so if you properly optimize the site for the search engines it will be just a matter of time when the site is indexed.

OP, it depends on what else you're doing. A list is just a conversion tool. There are others out there.

  • Yes, by advertising on Facebook, you are using their list of subscribers. If your offer is appealing to a segmented niche of their list of subscribers, you can turn a profit if your numbers gel. You will usually pay more to promote your offer to someone else's list.

Creating your own list of subscribers on your email list, just means a higher return on your investment, because you spend less advertising dollars marketing to your own buyers list of subscribers that you have accumulated over time.

Sure. A list is one way to connect with folks. Many ways exist. Just get in your reader's hearts to become memorable. These folks bookmark your blog, revisit daily and grow your community and business.

"Achieving positive ROI" merely means that you make more on your investment than you spent setting it up. That's all, nothing more.

Positive ROI should never be your goal, IMO. Making $1 more than you spend gets you in to positive ROI. Everyone that I know needs to earn more profit than that in order to make a nice living.

Set ambitious but realistic earning goals instead.

    No.

And besides, why would you want to spend money to build someone else's business for a one time sale...even if it was profitable?

No list means you have no customers. No customers=No Business

    Of course.

In some niches trying to "build a list" is counter-productive.

Most of the replies here are from people who have never stepped outside MMO.

The only way to know which works best is to test both.

Do some of your own promoting, such as Social Media, etc. The only thing it will cost you is some time and it will help ensure a positive ROI.

You don't need build a list to be on the ROI. You need the list to re-advertise your products later and make more money.

    Yes, it's possible.

However, building a list can help increase your earnings.

    Yes, you can do that.

Still, I'd ask myself what is it about email marketing that puts me off. I was always reluctant to do email marketing. It was a risk I wasn't willing to take for a long time. I don't remember exactly why, but it probably had something to do with opening myself up to rejection, etc.

Now I have a small list and it is a challenge, but I am happy for the experience in a number of ways. But I am certain that I will never, ever, ever to a Facebook Live gig. My hat is off to those who are comfortable with that.

Yes, it is possible to achieve positive ROI without list building. But the main thing is that you should have a very good strategy.

We make an ROI doing both, i.e. List Building and without List Building. As some people have already pointed out. It really depends on your market. Meaning is it a general market or a targeted market.

Example of a positive ROI doing both: MMOffline = general market and MMOnline = targeted marke
Example of advertising both to earn a positive ROI: MMOffline = T.V., Radio, Billboards, etc. and MMOnline: Online T.V., Online Radio, Online Adverts

Aside, the above is all relative and in a sense it is relative marketing. Makes for easier ROI management and easier ROI planning when the end products are all relative.

Example: Offline T-Shirt Store (MMOffline) sells branded products to sports and race car clubs. Both are relative when promoted together. Such as a local high school football team and a local race car track sponsor each other at public functions. People tend to buy into being part of a community and buy T-shirts that support both.

Online T-Shirt Store (MMOnline) sells the products online where 100s of the products can be ordered and drop-shipped. To promote simply stage a photo shoot of both the football team and race car club together with buyers of the products. To build a list simply invite the buyers to join for future announcements, promos, discounts, etc.

Want to help others, replace or merge football team with handicapped kids. Why not make the world and your business a better place.

Aside, the above sets up many different ways to turn a positive ROI. Did I mention seasonal sales

A good example of when it's silly to list-build is when the campaign goal is to get a phone call.

Trying to put someone on an email list instead of clicking to call is LOL.

It really depends on your campaign goal. Anyone who relies on absolutes is just lazy in their thinking or ignorant of other situations.

  • Yes you can but you still need to consider if paid marketing is worth it. If you are actually earning more than you spend.

The way I see, list building and traffic generation methods - free or paid - works.

If you have supportive audience who share your views and trust you.

Otherwise no amount of traffic will do conversions.
