Why I stopped putting ads on my blogs (and what I do instead)

Hey Warriors,

First off I want to say that I'm very grateful to be part of this community. I posted a question a couple of days ago that was answered within a few hours by some random internet friends. I think that's amazing.

Let me give something back by explaining why I stopped putting ads on my blogs and what I do instead.

Ads suck
Let's be honest here. Ads can be very annoying. They're not only intrusive but in most cases they slow down your blog, because of all the external crap that's being loaded. This hurts user experience and maybe even your ranking.

Ads get blocked
Doesn't need much explanation. Ad Blockers are getting more common and you can't make money for ads that don't show up on the screens of your visitors.

You need A LOT of traffic to make money of ads
Doesn't matter if you get paid CPM or PPC. You need a lot of traffic to generate a decent income. Plus the network is already getting paid by the advertiser. So you're getting paid with the leftovers.

So how should you monetize your blog?

Start writing Money Articles.

Here's how it works
Your blog probably targets a niche right? That niche has certain needs and problems. If you can figure out what those needs and problems are and find a way to give your readers what they want, you will make money. These can be your own (digital) products or you can become an affiliate for someone else's product or service.

The best way to present these product or services is to write money articles. Write an in depth review about one or multiple products. Or an extensive "How To" guide that requires on multiple purchases of products or services to solve a problem.

These money articles will form the pillars of your blog and you should try to funnel your traffic to these posts by linking to them from your regular content.

Also there's lots of great tools out there that you can use to test and optimize your money articles for maximizing conversions, but I''l save that for the next one.

Why not have both ads and affiliate content on your site? Give yourself the best chance of making money from each visitor. Not everybody will buy an affiliate product but many will click an ad.

Good question! Because you don't want to distract visitors from you money articles. You don't want them to leave your blog by clicking on an ad. And also because of the reasons mentioned: bad user experience, decreased load speed etc.

I think you are really overthinking this. If you put a few ads on your site...it will not cause you site load load slower.

As for not wanting people to click away from your blog...That's why you should set your external links to open up in a new window.

If your content is good enough...People will continue to read your article even if they click on an ad. And...If they click on an ad instead of reading your article, then they were not interested in the article.

Just because you don't have ads on your blog, does not force people to read contetn that they have no interest in.

When thinking about what people are going to do on your site...You should consider what you do when you visit a site.

As for me...I don't click away from content that I have interest in when I see an ad on the page. I usually simply open up the ad in a new window and either read the content first or come back to the content after I visit the page with the ad.

I really don't think people are much different than I am when it comes to that.

        Just my opinion.

Testing > opinions. I've seen a significant increase in revenue since I removed ads from my blog and started focusing on money articles. But if it works for you, great!

Sure it's still advertising, but with the big difference that you can do the pre-selling yourself and give value at the same time.

The action can be that he can download a report.

The action can be that he can visit a sales page of the product you have mentioned.

Whatever is the action on a single page there should only be one action.

When you add ads on your blog, the ads are designed such that they will hypnotise your audience with their message.

So if you really want to build an unstoppable online business then you need to focus on your business model strongly.

If you are building a blog only for ads like news sites, viral content sites etc then you should monetise using ads. Because you have a chance of getting a good amount of traffic.

If you are building a niche blog and are going to monetise using affiliate products then keep the ads out of the equation. Your affiliate sales will increase and the ads that don't pay much will not eat into your affiliate profits.

If you are building a membership site then you don't need ads because your members would not enjoy the experience unless you are a Facebook.

So every business has a different model that you have to follow and pick one model that works for you.
          Exactly, thanks for adding this!

For e.g. if you search for "noise cancellation headphones" the next thing you know is that you will see an ad for this everywhere you visit. On youtube or Facebook or blogs or forum. This ad is following you because it knows what you want. So if headphones was on your mind. And you see some really good headphones. You are going to click away from whatever you were doing. In this case reading someones blog.

Yeah but the profit is way more! For 1000 clicks on ad from google, you get roughly $3 but if you make 1000 people click your affiliate offer, you will get approximately 2% pr 3% conversions which means 20 to 30 sales. If you sell a $30-product, you will earn $600 at ease.
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11387387].message }}

$3 on a Google Ad is unheard of.

You don't need to sell $20 or $30 products.

Like if you sell an Aweber Subscription. You will be paid every month that person keeps the Aweber Account. So the lifetime value of 1 customer can be $10 or $100 if he stays for 10 months or $300 if he stays for three years.

In the same way there are High Paying Affiliate Programs. Those can pay you starting with $19 but if customer really likes what he gets for $19 he can go ahead and buy something for $500 commission to you.

So Affiliate Marketing you can control a lot of things. It is your marketing engine that you are building.

What you should do is go and ready Income Reports from some of the Best Bloggers. You will see some bloggers who have both Google Adsense Income + Affiliate Marketing Income and 90% Times the Affiliate Income is bigger than the Google Adsense Income.

This information is available on simple google search. Let me know here what you find.

Yep; for years I have been advising clients, customers, readers and any blogger within ear shot to trash the ads. My sidebar is all about my brand, and now it simply houses an image directing readers to buy my eBook.

The thing with ads is they do not brand you. I prefer to brand me and to help my readers with my products and services. This helps me and my blog stand out from other blogs that may go a bit too heavy on ads.

That is fine and well if your blog is about you and your brand.. fine and well.

However, an affiliate marketer that sells affiliate products it obviously does not apply unless the product is relevant to another affiliate product.

Do you get many affiliate marketers to your blog?

Nah, that is just wrong. Ads do in fact brand you and especially a blogger. You might want to rethink that and look at all of the top blogs that advertise other blogs products. When a reader learns that a blog is trusted by other blogs the readers become part of a blog network when they visit those blogs on a regular basis. In part it is called network marketing. network marketing can be very lucrative when done right.

Hi besides blogging and placing ads, have you ever consider doing videos as well?

Videos are just as powerful to reach out to more people.

You can either do one in which people can see your face or your PC screen or both.

I know a few marketers who are very good in those.

I am more of a writing introvert who enjoys writing e-books, e-brochures and e-magazines.

I agree with you, OP. Sometimes it's useless to have ads on your blog if it's not high traffic enough. But then again, what works best depends on the blog and niche.

I know someone who runs a fashion/beauty blog and started out with ads first. It wasn't working. She decided to invest a bit of money posting a job ad at Onlinejobsph (or was it Upwork, I forgot) to write about her own products and the brands she's affiliated with. Someone took the job, and ever since then she's made more money and connections than if she relied on paid ads.

I'm hoping soon the Basic Attention Token will be a viable option for publishers to get paid more than they're currently getting from the existing ad systems.

    "Publishers are hurting
Google and Facebook take 73% of all ad dollars and 99% of all growth.
    Revenue is recently down 66%.
Bots inflicted $7.2 billion in fraud last year.
Over 600 million phones and desktops run ad-blocking.
Publishers cannot seamlessly monetize value added services. "

Definitely an interesting project to keep an eye on considering the team they have behind it.

This is great advice. While I believe you can still do quite a bit with ads, I am not a fan of them either. I use them sparingly, but prefer to promote products far more than using ads.

You can also build a list from your and monetize those on your list instead of just counting on money articles.

True, My bounce rate used to be very high with those ads, and the second thing they don't offer much money or value to either my pocket or my visitor's.

Affiliate model is working far better for me than ads. So it rocks

These are not the only options these days, a growing number of publishers are earning crypto with their website by becoming a Brave Verified Publisher. It's still early days so if you're not writing content for the crypto audience then earnings will probably be pretty slim but there are indeed other options coming onto the scene!

Great topic. Yeah, I do believe that ads are not that likeable anymore, therefore I use my ad spots to promote my books (and besides, they aren't always detected as ads since they are simple jpg images).

The affiliate links is also a great idea. I guess the main point is to offer great value for your readers, and what you try to sell to be something extra.

Actually only third-party ad networks get blocked. If you sell a banner yourself and place it as a graph on your site, any ad-blocker will remove it.

Personally I would always try to build a list.

That where you've got no annoying banners or adverts on your website.

In the sidebar of your blog include a free offer to entice people to sign up to your email list.

Also at the end of each post insert a section where people can sign up to your email list.

Provide lots of good content and make your blog a resource.

If you build an email list, you you will be able to capture your traffic and send an email out promoting offers any time you feel like it.

In the long run your make a lot more money...
