Adding Contents and Monetizing a Directory Website

Hey Warriors,
I have planned to start a directory website to help tourists find the best places and services in a particular area. I am new to creating and monetizing web directories and need some tips/advice on creating my first one.
How do i go about adding contents to the directory?
Main Traffic channels for web directories.
and what point should i monetize it and what are the different monetization methods for a directory website.
In addition to this if anyone here have any recommendation of tools and services to use. Please mention those below.

    Directories are almost impossible to rank in Google. So how are you going to get traffic to it? You may be better off creating a travel blog that covers the tourist area. This way you can add real long form content that can get ranked well in Google.

    If you are going to monetize a directory site, I don't think it's a good opportunity because there are lots of competitors and most of people use directories to link spam.
