Guest Posting Best Practices

When inviting people to guest post on my site is it common practice to set them up as an author on my WordPress installation? Or do you have them send you the article, review it, then post it on my own but have the author box at the bottom for them?

    I normally Go with the second option. It is much more easy and reliable for the future changes in the post ( I am talking about WordPress ) because you never know in future they might change the content and you even will not realize that.

    Author - can write, upload photos to, edit, and publish their own posts.

    Will they only be guest posting a single time, or will they be posting often?

    If you set them up as an author, then you would have the author archive page on your site. Depending on your theme, and content strategy this could be a good thing or a bad thing.

    It may be best to set up just a bio at the end of the content, but really depends on how your site is structured.

    ...because you never know in future they might change the content and you even will not realize that.
    If setting up an author in this manner, you could always create the author account, but do not give the actual author the logins. Basically create the author account and post on their behalf.

    If an author does have access to their account and decides to go rogue, you can always change the account email address and password (and hope that post revisions were enabled).

    Yes, The second option is much more reliable. Author permissions enable users to add, edit and publish the posts. You can give them the contributor account. When user submits a post from their contributor account, It will mark as pending and you have to review and then publish it.

    In my practice the best way is to contact webmaster directly and suggest guest posting opportunities for both sides.

    Yes, I think its best practice to create contextual links from the answers or signatures. I have a company's blog and have 100% original & unique content for guest blogging. But its really very hard to start guest blogging without having some connections.

    I set them up as authors Troy but only after vetting them, befriending them, and getting to really know them over months and years, so I trust them.

    If you invite strangers to guest post, keep your admin rights and just copy and paste the post. Main reason; you have no idea who these folks are, if they would have the knowledge to create strong passwords and if they would actually write a 2nd guestie. No sense giving admin rights to folks for a 1 night stand, right?
