Is Amazon ranking a function of price or sales volume ?

Hi Friends,

I know amazon updates the sales rank of a book every hour and as I understand, a single sale can boost the sales rank by a certain amount irrespective of the price of the book.

So if there are two books one priced at 19.99$ and another at 4.99$ both having similar rank and each one makes a sale, then will the resulting sales rank be similar for both or will the one with the higher price get a bigger boost in the sales rank ?

Does amazon give a higher exposure for a higher priced book, than a lower priced book, if both are making same
I> Volume in sales
2> Turnover (price*volume) in sales
3 > Profit to amazon (after deducting printing cost and royalties)

For a kindle ebook, I can choose to earn 70% or 35% royalty, will the book get more exposure on amazon for the same number of sales if I select 35% royalty and give amazon a bigger cut, or does it make no difference (in which case why would I settle for 35% when I could get 70%?)

Thanks,
Al Khidr.

      Al,

Yes, it's a good question; but apparently, few people here know the right answers. May I suggest you contact Amazon support and see if they can direct you to the place on their website where they discuss book sales rank? You might also Google "Amazon sales rank" to see if others have talked about the topic on their websites and blogs. It's always best to go right to the source (Amazon) for technical questions.

      The best to you,

Amazon is your best source for a long term approach to ranking Al per Steve.

But....short term, nothing beats a free 1 day giveaway followed by a surge in downloads. Of course this is a temporary fix but good in a pinch if you are keen to spread the word.

Give the eBook away for free. 1 day is OK. Email to your list. Share through your blog. Rank high based on the volume of downloads.

As a suggestion - independent of Amazon's answer - keep making friends, sharing value online and writing more eBooks. As James Altucher said; one of the best ways to sell your latest eBook is to write the next one.
