Heading to the Philippines for a few days - what would you do $$

Hey everyone.

I have some business meetings in the Philipipnes in a couple weeks. A regular thing.

That aside - I am thinking about starting a few side ventures. Not sure what yet.
If you where to head over, what would you?

Not looking for information as much as opening a discussion. Fire away

Where? P.I. is a big country. I would go to Baguio City. Popular resort. After the Earthquake, millions of dollars poured into the region, from USA, Singapore, Japan.

While there, I would enquire/research other popular resort areas in P.I.

I would visit, if time allowed, the outer islands, see Mactan, where development has boomed in recent times.

What you want to look for are ways people are spending money, especially Americans, and Asian tourists. They have money to spend. Without knowing your circumstances, or your investment strategies, the P.I. offer up some wonderful opportunities.

Maybe, you can look for a knit factory, they have a thriving industry which exports a lot to USA. Can you secure any rights to any products you see?

Can you create an information product while there, like best restaurants in Manilla for Americans to eat, off the beaten path.

It is a huge MUSIC country, with Filipinas being discovered in all the TALENT contests around the world?

Could you take pics every day, of every place you visit, and in the time you are there and offer some rights, use them at a blog, sell them, use them as posters for motivation. You'll see some of the best sunrises/sunsets ever, especially at the tip of one of the islands where you get both.

So much possibility you have. But start with where you will be. And then brainstorm from there.

Where do Americans go to retire? That would be a report I'd buy, and what of American investments? What is allowed or isn't?

Anyhow, I'm jealous. And due for a return to one of God's most beautiful countries and peoples.

    Enjoy.

PS. Discussion opened, and like the living chess board at a Mactan resort, it is your move.

Is your main business already making you all the money you want?

IMO, side ventures are distractions and to be avoided in favor of working on your main business to get it running smoothly and as profitably as you can.

The fact that you are not sure about what you want to do just yet, suggests to me that you don't have a plan or a direction for your time and effort.

I think the more productive way to spend a few days out of the country would be to relax, clear your mind, and begin focusing your thinking on ways to increase your main business so that you don't feel like you need to chase side hustles.

    Have a nice trip!

Usually Steve, you offer some of the best advice on the forum, but this one? I find it a bit condescending without reason.

One of his business ideas is that of a matchmaker, between Filipina girls and Western men.

The reason I suggested resorts, is for him to find TARGET market for this service.

To chastize him about focusing on his business? Seems a bit uncharacteristic of you.

We really don't know why he is going, maybe to visit his wife's family. And while there is looking for other opportunities.

What is normally a well thought and measured response from you, just doesn't ring true today, maybe you're out of sorts?

Until he tells us, we don't know how much time he spends on his business ventures or for his reasons for going somewhere. Going to a foreign land, doesn't indicate to anyone it is a time to relax, unless you are going on vacation, does it?

      Anyhow, your lecture is noted.

I'll let the OP speak for himself.

        Gordon,

I'm sorry my post didn't meet your standards. It was not meant as a "lecture" (as you labeled it) - just a personal opinion about how I would use my time if I were in the OP's shoes. Isn't that what forums are for? personal opinion?

        Presumptuous? Here's what the OP said . . .
"If you where to head over, what would you do? Not looking for information as much as opening a discussion."
So he wants a discussion from forum members about what they would do. I gave my opinion . . . you gave yours. Isn't that why we're here?

Anyone wanting to do this and has local Filipino presence in the Philippines might run afoul of the law regarding matchmaking. Get a local Pinoy lawyer to walk you through the legalities or the clean up might be very messy indeed...

  • I agree with Steve. I would simply relax and visit random places or places recommended by locals there. The Philippines is such a beautiful country. Many places to go to

    Hey everyone...

Thanks for the responses. This is just a quick trip, I go once every month or two, im from Australia.
I lived in the Philippines for about 5 years in late 20's and early 30's when i was writing software. Now I just turned 40.

My wife and I live in Australia, but we own stores, restaurants, real estate, call centres and business centres in the Philippines. Heading over to look at a boat we re thinking of buying and meeting some business partners -

We was over just in July setting up some tech support guys for sites we own including.... yes thats right dating. - we started off with some dating sites but are looking into dating services now.

I appreciate the feed back about not going into side businesses, but my whole life is made up of side businesses. Some are great and have set me up for a long time ahead and some are terrible, just learners and burners.

Im always looking into new things. Was hoping this post my grab the attention of someone doing something there... thanks guys
