Are there any expert website marketing people out there that would work for a share of the company plus a percentage of profits? Or is this expecting too much?

Yes such scenario do exist. If a person has exceptional marketing skills, companies lure him with such offers. There are many examples one can find in which a simple funda has saved companies save millions and the profits have been passed on to the minds behind all the hard/smart work.

      Good Morning Samaira,
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
Do you have any thoughts on how or where we could find such a person please?
Our website isn't new, and has had very little marketing done so far, but it does have a lot of potential and a good reputation.
      Kind Regards,
      Ian.

Unless you tell more about your business model, maybe Url of your website, no one credible is gonna come out and contact you.

Tell what is ur business model, tell about yourself, tell what kind of person you are looking for and maybe someone will contact you.

Post your proposition in the joint ventures sub-forum. Don't expect much. These things, rarely, if ever, go anywhere and when they do, it's usually not a very pretty outcome.

Color me jaded, but I'm basing my comment on decades of observation.

    Ian,

Here's my take on your question:

If a person is truly an expert at marketing, what advantage is it to work for someone else, share the profits, and build a company that they don't fully own?

In addition, you have said that the web site has some age to it, but it's apparently not performing well.

So what do you bring to the table except "potential" as you call it? In this business, "potential" is everywhere - especially for marketing experts!

It seems to me, this is a pretty one-sided deal in your favor.

If I'm an expert in marketing, I'm going to build my own company on my own terms rather than partner with lots of "potential."

    . . . but that's just me, I guess.

    Good luck to you,

    Steve

No - that would be anyone with even a modicum of common-sense.

      Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply....I was hoping for some interesting input.....
I feel that maybe I haven't made my own position clear enough so here goes....

Taking your points as they appear, I am sure that there are many marketing experts out there that would be hopeless at running a successful business and conversely there are many good businessmen that are not especially good at marketing.Like most other things in life, there is nothing magical about marketing.
The whole point of a partnership is that you are agreeing to cooperate to advance your mutual interests and that you are actually working for yourselves not someone else.
Our website does have some age to it, as you rightly say, and it has not had very much marketing to date....the reason being is that we have have been beavering away trying to perfect the supply chain and the delivery and packaging side of things and getting the customer service up to scratch. I am sure that you would agree that there would be little point in getting overwhelming sales only to mess up on the actual delivery of goods.
Your comment about being a one-sided deal is unfair because you have no idea what sort of deal it is that I am offering....so here goes.....
I am offering an equal share of profits plus an equal number of company shares to a marketing partner.

Ian, it sounds to me like all you want to do is hire a marketing consultant or employ an experienced digital marketer. How you choose to remunerate them is up to you, but there's no need to give away part of your company - nowadays, digital marketing specialists are easily found.

Also, be careful to keep the discussion general. Once you start detailing your requirements, this thread risks becoming an ad - which belongs in the classified section.

It's possible. Depending on your business and it's potential. You might stand a chance on sites like Angel.co of finding a marketer that wants to be part of a start-up. But, your business will likely have to offer something new or unique. Obviously, your chances are significantly less if you're doing something like dropshipping.

Marketers are like any other trade. Just because one is a good marketer, it doesn't mean that they are equipped or have the desire to handle all of the other aspects involved in owning a business. That's why co-founders and partnerships exist.

But, if you have a budget to market your site... Why not just budget for a paid marketer and retain your equity? Pulling money out of a new company to pay everyone and keep them happy could be detrimental to growth.

Is the company a well-known, multi million dollar company? Yes you may get a few folks.

If not, no, nobody would be interested. Only because folks can find tons of jobs or just start their own marketing business and make a ton more versus working for market share in an unknown.

I'd just either hire someone Ian full time, or hire a freelancer for projects.

It is possible but unlikely. In my experience someone with those skills tend to want to do it on their own - why build someone else's business. That said, if you have an awesome product that is unique and has a "moat" (few competitors) then folks might consider equity partnering. I am in discussions at the moment with a 3D printer firm (yes I know - totally different) looking for a strategic advisory, and I am open to equity and profit share. They don't have any cash but the upside is significant. I wouldn't waste my time for equity that has no value.

This seems to be the general concensus on this forum so I guess we will start hiring!
      Thanks again

Typically I don't see many "experts" truly doing this. IMO, they would either just work on their own properties/assets or they would ask for guaranteed income based off what they are providing.

Yes, there are many ways to get marketing done on a profit-share basis.

Webinar JV's are an obvious example (and typically convert 10 times as well as a sales-page or sales-video) . . . the profits are shared between the product or course owner, the owner of the mailing-list or social-media following, and the person who puts together the JV and helps make the webinar as effective as possible etc.
