new domains can get top search listings just as much as an aged domain. While I agree the name may be more known because it is aged but that could be just as bad as good.

Unless you do your research to find out what those names have been used for, you could hurt your business more than help it. Imagine putting up a website on this 10 year old domain name just to find out it was used to scam 10,000 people ..

Good tip... you can also check what has been posted on the domain previously from FreshDrop.net - just scroll over to the WBR column.

It will show you pages from that domain that have been archived at Archive.org.

I just picked up a PR4 3YR .com in a niche I am about to start with the exact keywords I need and another PR6 6YR and might use it for a article directory or review site

That is a cool site! How long does a PRx domain will remain a PRx domain (assuming you put a set of decent content on there)? I'm sure it depends a lot on the domain, but can you expect it to last at all? Cool trick if you can!

After my purchase of the 2 domain they didn't show in my account. I phoned godaddy and spend an hour on the phone and it appears the sales was legit but can still go wrong. The staff handling this do it only during the day so I will update if the sales happen. So hold on before you buy anything as this don't make sense to me at the moment. Nearly got another few.

If you go to tdnam.com and click on auctions won, it will tell you when the domain will be in your account.

It usually takes a little less than a week.

I think the original owner has a cretain number of days to reclaim the name. However, I've bought dozens of domains this way... and only lost one once... and my money was refunded right away.

Thanks they told me that as the one has just expired so it might even come through today. At least you don't loose any money. I checked the PR elsewhere before but if I loose the PR I can't loose the years.

I saw a good one - searched under GEO and the domain smirnof.com came up - I suppose for some it have become a "location"

The 2 domains I purchased for $5 is no longer available here when I search for them on tdnam.com so I must have gotten them. will wait a few days and see as the invoice from godaddy states i paid for those

Nice way to look for domains in a niche with some age and pr but must watch out as it can get addictive like you say as I already have plenty just doing nothing

Correct. It takes a few days for the domain to be transferred to you.

However several of the domains that I purchased from there that were supposed to have authentic PR (I filtered out Fake PR domains) neither of them retained their PR after the domain transfer. So I ended up with domains that I couldn't do squat with.

My sister once worked for a company who bought domains, put on about 5 articles with lsi keywords in the domains, add adsense, bookmarked it through social marker...and whala it's done. They also put something like "this website is for sale"..after several months the site would sell for a profit..

The good thing about this is that there are hostings that only cost 4 dollars per year for 75 MB space, so their actual business model can be implemented for only $20..not bad for sites that sell well over a thousand each..

I have a question for somebody more experienced with buying old domains:

There's a 13-year-old domain that has had great content up since 1997. Since last year, though, the Archive.org "Wayback Machine" reveals a link directory page, and Google has that in its cache now as well. The site's been indexed since '97 and is about my exact niche AND exact keyword, but the asking price is $520.
It has about 30 backlinks.

I'm thinking about buying the site and changing the hosting and WHOIS and updating Google Webmaster Tools to tell it that I have acquired the website. Hopefully this won't reset anything, but even if the backlinks go, that's okay. It's the age I'm concerned about. I'd like to have this as a supporting site to my money site (hosted on a different server). The domain age is what I need Google to recognise and not reset by any means.

Is it worth the $520? Or should I just buy another 10+ year site for $5 from freshdrop and start putting up content there about my niche (even though the keyword won't be in the domain name and it's never had related content up)? I'm thinking that $500 worth of strategic SEO work would get ANY site that hasn't been a spamming platform to rank well. I would of course look for a site that has been indexed constantly over 10 years and shows many snapshots in the Wayback Machine.

Any input would be lovely.

I would love to anwer your question but nobody knows how much profit there is in your niche.

Although age might give you a slight edge for big competitive niches, for smaller niches, you will not get much of a ranking boost.

You could spend that $520 to create 104 articles that could bring you traffic and hundreds of backlinks.

To me, the only reason to buy a domain from that company would be because of PR and the implied backlinks that come with PR.

As the PR of most of the domains are fake, I would not waste my money with that company.

The way they "judge" fake PR is they check if the header matches the site. So a domain that is 301 redirected to another domain may show up as "fake"

Also people can "spoof" the headers to grab the PR from other sites and thus show up as fake. It is generally an imperfect process.

use PR as a starting point, but look more for age, indexing and quality backlinks

I use freshdrop daily and it is a great tool to utilize. Try not to use the PR so much as a factor as most of the time it is fake. The easiest way to find out if a domain has any PR is by checking out its backlinks. If it has a PR4 and no backlinks, the PR won't transfer over because it is fake. It is also a good idea to check the backlinks out. Sometimes they have been removed etc. Do your due diligence first as most of the PR here will not stick.

Try to do a sort by backlinks instead and then check those out. A couple of times I have purchased sites based on backlinks, yet the site said it had no PR. Once the site was up and some content was on it, it turned out to be a PR5. I have done this a couple of times, all for $12. You can't beat that!

Fake PR won't do you any good as it will go away once you try to develop. It is an empty PR and truly has no value.

How can they get PR without backlinks? That doesn't make sense.

Try checking with Yahoo. Google never shows all backlinks.
