How To Sell Websites Without Getting Ripped Off?

Here's what happened:

I sold a website, the buyer sent me the money through paypal, I transferred the files and domain to the buyer, and then he immediately filed a complaint with paypal.

After their "investigation" paypal ruled in his favor. I spoke to someone on the phone and they said it had to do with there not being any shipping address, and therefore no "proof" that I delivered.

How can I sell websites in the future and avoid getting ripped off?

How did you get ripped off.......?
    Did he steal your website?
If you owned the site.....it's registered right?
Or were you selling a Free site...like Bloggspot....I think their TOS doesn;t allow that, but I am not sure

    Hi Scott,

    Really sorry to hear that.

Try using Escrow.com. That way a third party holds access to the funds. Sure, there is a fee involved, but a x% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

Justin Brooke put up a pretty good post for site flippers on the legal front too. Read Here

Again, that blows dude. Sorry to hear about you getting ripped off.

    Good luck,

    -Lance

Hey Scott...sorry to hear that...really sucks.

Lance gave you a great resource if your into website flipping in Justin Brooke. He's the best that I know of. Escrow.com is a good way to go especially if you're dealing with a big money flip.

You may want to consider other payment options besides the infamous PayPal. I wonder if you would have the same outcome if you used Moneybookers, or Authorize.net or something similar. I like the idea of using escrow.com for large amounts, but at some point you have to decide what is your risk level. How much money in lost sales and profit can you afford before making some changes?

Surprised to hear that. Usually they do NOT accept disputes if it is not a physical product.

I have a broker for selling websites represented on my marketing site. Guess that's one way to avoid the crooks

Wow, sorry to hear this man. This is the worst part of selling website since Paypal is crazy in favour of the buyers. You just have to watch out for those scamers like that when doing business with them. Having a broker may help.
