Greetings,

I'm trying to ascertain the main differences between the two applications. I use Camtasia for Mac for virtually everything I do that is video related, including recording all or just a portion of my screen. I haven't encountered anything that I wanted to do that I haven't figured out, how to do.

Ina few sentences, could someone very familiar with both explain why it would make sense to add SnagIt to my toolbox? I'm happy to purchase it if it's better suited to certain things that I am currently doing in Camtasia, which I love using.

When I watch the video describing the product, I don't see anything that I'm missing.

Thank you.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with SnagIt. I can't help but wonder, though, why you would consider purchasing it or anything like it if Camtasia does everything you need it to do? It's like buying a car that has heated seats when you live in Florida. Yeah, it's an added feature but you aren't going to use it!

Frank, Snagit is a image capture tool. You can select portions of a screen or even an entire website to capture as a image file. It has a editor that you can change the size and add stuff like arrows. No comparison when looking at Photoshop but a quick and easy editor to mark up your images.

I own it and find it a great tool for grabbing images for step by step tutorials. Stuff like click here, then this shows then click here and so on.

Again - nothing there I can't do in Camtasia. That's why I'm confused. I'm thinking that possibly SnagIt is more geared to things that I CAN do it Camtasia, but may find it quicker and easier to do in SnagIt. "Work Around," is my middle name. :-)

I'll look for a free trial. Thank you, Thomas.

Looks like I learned something new today. haha I didn't even think of using Camtasia like that. I always just used Snagit or this other piece of software (which is sort of like Snagit) for image captures when working on my software documentation.

I live to serve. :-) I love Camtasia. One of the best products I have ever used and the 2018 upgrade is sweet.

As far as image captures go, you can't go wrong with a free screen shot and then going from there. That's why I'm wondering how they manage to sell that application.

          Cheers.

I don't know, either - but my research indicates that it is an extremely popular application, especially in the corporate environment, mainly for training videos and product tutorials.

      Thanks, Al.

Yes - I clearly stated that, but thanks for sharing, even though I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, which was the genesis of the thread. :-(

I can't resist the urge to ponder, however, why you would consider buying it or anything like it if Camtasia does all that you require it to do?

Previously asked and answered. Have you read the thread before deciding to post?

Somehow I believe that your need to ponder is based on not being able to comprehend that someone might choose to spend money that they don't need to spend. If all you think about is money, and not what having money allows you to do, nothing I can say will shed any light on my desire to spend for something I might need or have convinced myself that I do want. I like learning new software and using it to save time. I have more money , than time.

      End of story. lol

I downloaded Snaggit to try, being a Jing user, and did not like the switch at all. Jing does most things right UX wise. They should of created a PRO version.

Never paid for Camtasia or Snaggit at the end of the day. I still use Jing, and when I need to do something bigger I switch over to Open Broadcasting Software. I edit the video with LightWorks. Jing, OBS, LightWorks... all very powerful free tools for someone who has to mind a budget.

You can do that in Camtasia - still or motion - or on my Mac with a 'Command 4.'

      [quote]and quick picture edits. [QUOTE]

      I use Photoshop for that.

Same, here. I appreciate knowing how you work, but I have given-up looking for an answer from anyone, here. I have posed the question, directly to Techsmith.

If I don't get a satisfactory answer from them, I'll just buy it and figure it out for myself. I was kinda figuring that in the end, that's how it would wind-up. lol

      Cheers.

Camtasia makes videos/movies of your screen. Snaggit makes photos/stills of your screen.

I get that, but like I said, I can take screenshots for free with my computer's on-board utilities. TY.

Snaggit probably has a few more advanced features. But I bought a Camtasia package that also included Snaggit and I haven't downloaded it, instead I use Windows free screen capture program Snipping Tool.

You can always check Youtube for some videos on Snaggit.

Thanks, Kurt. I like that his demo was Mac-based and although I can see how it helps him a great deal with a specific aspect of his work flow, that' not something I would ever use it for.

All-in-all, I think Camtasia is good enough for what I do. I'll keep looking for something else new and interesting, to invest in and learn.

That said, I have started taking one of the 20 Udemy course I have purchased over the past year and never touched. lol It's going to be a long, cold winter, but I plan to keep busy.

    Cheers.

I'm sure that many others would say the exact opposite, since it's nothing more than a matter of opinion, based upon how much effort you put into actually learning how to use either program. Wouldn't you agree??? :-)

Sounds like you trying to fix a problem that does not exist, just stick to Camtasia. I've used Camtasia for years and never even thought about anther software because it already does everything I need.

Well, I never said there was a problem. I consider curiosity a healthy concept, especially later in life. lol

That said, after years of using Camtasia, it appears to be meeting my needs. I was simply curious if there wasn't an easier, faster, more enjoyable way to complete some of my projects that I sometimes find myself kludging, with Camtasia being one of the tools employed.

Whenever or wherever I can I can save time, I will happily pay for any tool that will allow me to do that. I'll never run out of money. My time is all but gone.

Everyone will get that, later in life. lol

I use Camtasia (not the newest version) but also reviewed and bought snag it after seeing a number of mentors seem to prefer that. I am using both for all-round needs. Descriptive informative graphics to share to recording clips of video. I found the snag it value very good and also the screen capture magnifier very good for accurate selection. The overall snag it apps seem to install well both on pc and mac. I had trouble with an alternative cloudapp I tried for a while. All in all, I find snag it good. The editing of video on Camtasia may be good for you but then I refer to more professional systems for that. best wishes.
