Can somebody advise me on purchasing a .ca domain please

I have recently tried to purchase a .ca domain from my provider (in aus) and was denied the option and was told that I needed to a Canadian born and bred to even look at one, now being from down under, there was no hope of that.

I have since read all sorts of wives tales that we can get one, by hook or by a crooked left turn ?

What is the reality ? where do I stand ?

Thanks

What's the reason for needing a .ca when you are in Australia? Seems like that would just confuse your potential customers?

No the site I hope to build will cater for different countries and I can bring those tld in on those countries. .ca would only be promoted to and service canadian customers.

You can ask some Canadian to buy for you and transfer. Pay extra $5/10for good service, never knew such restriction existed.

Yes a good common question, why the .ca ? the answer for branding and protection of the brand name, I own all other tld for the name

    .net
    .com
    .com.au
    .co.uk
    .nz
    .info

    etc

If it's not possible I wont loose any sleep, would be nice to round it out and lock it away is all.

    Thanks Pete

I'm curious how many of the file name extensions you own...trying to register all of them? I remember looking to register a new domain a few months ago, and it seems a whole wack load of new file name extensions are now available to choose from.

I own as listed above, yes there are many options, but I am happy with my lot, still need to find a work around for the .ca not sure what to do there yet.

I don't think buying a .ca FOR CANADIAN customers will make a big difference to ur customers. U will need to spend considerable time doing SEO/promotions for every tld of every country to get ranked.
Have a .com. It is most widely used and easier to remember.

Right, according to CIRA (Canadian Internet Registration Authority)
registration rules, you have to follow established criteria.

Easiest solution is to find Canadian citizen to help you out
or to create and then register company with Canadian address.

The .ca domain is a little restrictive, as mentioned about, you can read more about it via CIRA.. I'm in Canada and had to do a few extra steps to register one, it wasn't as easy as .com's or others.
