help with my 2 year old site - how to increase traffic?

I have been running a site for almost 2 years that specialises in cheap flights. Basically I find cheap airline deals from Australia and post them - so in other words my site is not really a blog (or is it?)

I get between 2-2.5K visitors per month, which obviously I want to increase. I don't think SEO will work for me as my content is largely the same - cheap flights (I update daily) and the market is saturated. I do use YOAST with all my posts.

I have about 360 email subscribers and 3.5K facebook followers. I tried instagram and twitter - both failing. With instagram I found people adding me (asking for a follow back, which I obliged and then deleting me) and twitter just didn't get any traction.

I pay for facebook ads and google ads - my budget each month is about $200-300. I make around $500/month but growth has been really slow.

It's really frustrating and looking for some help & advice.

Ok. So, you want to drive traffic. Find out who your main competitors are. Then find out where they are buying ads. Then buy ads on those sites. That's just one idea...

Another is, go niche. Set up mini funnels to drive traffic through to your main site for each country/airline/holiday/etc. Then promote those niche landing pages to those interested in holidays in XYZ country. Get an email address so you can promote other offers (maybe not just flights). Nice image for your Facebook ad of the country, people smiling, families, palm trees, sunshine if relevant ... snow, skis, lodges, if relevant, etc.

Another is, offer a free lead magnet 'How to save hundreds of dollars off your flights' share one key thing or '10 ways to make your flight more enjoyable'. 'Top 10 Flight Experiences' which could be a listing of the best airlines and the facilities offered, always be putting up buttons to your flight checker.

Another one is to go niche with young travelers, retirees, sports fanatics, people who love fishing, scuba divers, honeymooners, etc. Promote specifically to them. Offer the best places to do XYZ and these are the best airlines, price vs facilities. Also promote to people interested in specific cities, countries, etc.

You can do a lot of things to generate the leads so you can promote flights and associated services. One thing you could do is offer a cheaper flight price, then offer special upgrades and physical products (like pillows, sun hats, sunglasses, flipflops, suntan lotion, etc.). Talk to airlines and charters to see if they can offer any deals that you can push via social media using idea #2. Then push your upsells. Work out your cart value and increase your ad spend.

Anyways, that's just off the top of my head...

    Regards...

Have you tried Instagram shoutouts? There are several influencer pages based on travel, contact the owners and ask them how much to post your photo (which should be themed like the owner's) with a link to your site in the owner's bio.

You might also go to Udimi.com and look for solo ads in the travel niche.

There are literally thousands of posts on the forum, on this topic, all of which contain an endless stream of the same regurgitated information.

    Try utilizing the search function.

First off, bravo for building your "money machine".

To increase production, give people a reason to stick around. That means great content. So if you are not blogging, perhaps you should.

There is so much you can blog about in your niche beyond cheap flights. There's hotels, car rentals, travel preparation, reviews for luggage, how to travel off the beaten path, etc...

Of course, the products and services your reviews will earn you affiliate commissions.

Another thing, why do you focus on cheap flights? Luxury travel pays way better.

    Hi Ainge,

In a nutshell, increase the utility value of your website:

    1. Expand the scope of your website by included value added content.

What else do your users need whenever they book "cheap flights"? Provide listings for cheap hotels and resorts at those same locations. List nearby attractions, details about the airports, car rental locations, transportation services, etc.

    2. Expand the scale of your content by including specific detailed information about each airport, and airline.

    3. Increase the scale and scope of your advertising campaigns.
    • Multi-Channel and Cross Channel Marketing
    • Expand your range of ad formats to include search ads,Display ads and video ads.
    • Implement Profit-driven marketing by removing all advertising budget limitations and optimize for maximum profits.
    • implement a true marketing automation platform like ActiveCampaigns, or AutoPilotHQ to maximize conversions and monetization of Lead Magnets and Newsletters.

I could write a book on each one of those suggestions, so do a deep dive to learn as much as you can and start implementing. I assure you those ideas will take your website traffic to completely new levels.

    HTH,

I agree with the folks here who suggested to add content.

I'd say, find out who your best audience is (people who travel a lot, obviously) and what they're interested in, and then write some excellent content, well-optimized with Yoast, about those subjects.

For example, posts about some key destinations, about saving money on flights, about being more comfy on long flights (most of the flights from Australia are going to be quite long), and so on.

Then post on LinkedIn too, and place and promote posts on Facebook that send people to your articles/content.

    Etc.

    Good luck!

Where is your traffic coming from currently? Just the facebook and google ads? is any of it organic?

I think you should work on building your list more, with that much traffic I would think you could get your list count much higher.

I would look at optimizing for SEO as well.

Predominantly from facebook. I say about 50%.

40% comes from my email lists and 10% through organic sources (is this SEO?)

SEO is a enigma to crack, i have tried for a long time but I think the niche I picked (travel) is too saturated?

Would you know of any references to SEO? Particularly a dummy's view to it?

OP, your problem is your DISMISSED SEO out of hand

Any quick keyword search of your niche yields LOTS of low competition under utilized target keywords

You might want to start with DOMINATING those sub-niches

It doesn't take much time and effort... just VISION

Stop paying for expensive FB traffic... that's a dead end considering the changes going on at FB

Get your content to appear precisely at the time your target audience is most interested in whatever you have to offer

I just look at cheap flights from Australia. I dont know how else I can specialise?

My main driver is price. So if there is a cheap flight to for example Japan, it will be on there.

I put up 3 posts daily and try to cover as many countries as I can.

    Thanks for everyone's replies

I agree with most things said here but I might add a bit more about my site that I should have -
    • So i post 3 times a day with deals from Australia to everywhere - think secretflying (who copy my content with no credit unfortunately - whole different matter)
    • I also post business class deals
    • On each post are affiliate links I have an agreement with an online travel agent that pays me for clicks etc) - so its in my benefit to maximise this

So with these in mind, I don't know how else specialising for SEO can help

  • I personally find blogging and facebook are the best ways to get traffic

Blogging takes a while to build traffic but if you consistantly post most days eventually you will start getting good targeted traffic

To get traffic on facebook you need to be interacting with people because fb has programed their algorithm to use Signals That Heavily Favor Active Interactions such as comments and likes, so when you post on your facebook timeline, it doesnt matter whether you have 5 or 5000 friends, if no one has liked or commented on that post very few people will see it.

I like the advice above of seeing where your competitors are advertising and doing the same - it was what I'd have gone with.

Another thing I'd do is get people on your list to involve others in the process - sort of a giveaway. Use some of the budget you have to run a competition where people invite others to do some type of action that results in you getting bigger in your space.
