facebook ad for local tattoo artist?

Hey folks, I have a client (who has become a friend) who does tattoos that I want to try running a FB ad for. I can't for the life of me think what his bait/incentive for the ad would be.

Example of bait for gym: voucher for one free month
Example of bait for chiropractor: cheap back adjustment
Example of bait for bar: Tell us what your free drink is and we'll pour you one for free

Obviously you make them take an action in exchange for any of those bait examples.

What could the bait be for my tattoo artist clients Facebook ad?
#artist #facebook #local #tattoo

none of that either / sorry champ

discount coupon maybe if they were a top tattooest, but a discount for a shiet tattoo, not worth it. / most people tip the tattoo artist as well for doing a good job, not look to save a dime

10 things before my Next tattoo ? probably learnt before or after my first

quiz, what type of tattoo ? if you have no idea what you want then best wait till you do, they are bloody hard to rub out, if you want to change your mind.

    How about this,

For your next awsome tattoo, Book your free consultation with (this city or towns) coolest tattoo artist Johny B Good, Today!.

Im tired but along those lines, at the consult the tattooist would then, book the actuual tattoo time slot to be done. should only be 15 mins or less, you could tell them to bring pictures or sketches of what they were looking to have done in the ad or when booking the consult

People want quality, and decent people to be around, does your mate have these attributes, maybe some background pics of his latest work or style

Have you tested offering a discount coupon? I'd give it a try until proven it doesn't work.

You can't sell people on signing up for an email list for 10 things someone needs to know? Curiosity can go a long way.

Personality quizzes are hot right now. A good quiz with suggestions based on asnwers where the results are sent to an email address to build a list may work. It may not. However, a personality quiz isn't the only type of quiz. Depending on copyrights for images, how about a "name the celebrity tattoo" quiz where the results are emailed.

A trivia/fact based quiz is also a consideration. As a matter of fact knowing all the answers feed into the power of these types of quizzes as the more people get correct the more they'll feel good about themselves.

Sorry chief, but you don't like my suggestions and this is all you come up with?

What about all the people that click the link and don't book an appointment? How do you plan to follow up with them? At the very least, have an interesting quiz of some type and add a retargeting pixel to the page, as well as the final page, and build a custom audience for follow up marketing, including possibly ads to "book a free consultation".

I'm a little perplexed as to why a discount wouldn't be a good idea to test. If someone is going to let someone tattoo them, obviously they're sold on the quality. So, a cheaper price for the same quality makes sense. I don't think many people would turn down a cheaper price for the same thing.

This was my first thought as well. These types of quizzes have the potential to go viral and bring in quite a bit of traffic. But you'd probably get a lot of leads that you couldn't actually do anything with since you can't tattoo someone remotely. Maybe have some type of consultation or tattoo design service in place if you go this route.

Good tattooists do not have to give discounts they have people lining up, if you mate wants to give discounts he may as well tattoo junkies and people from under rocks. how does your mate want to brand himself, a respected in demand tattooist or a average discounter to the masses and deadbeats for a nickle n dime ? may as well write articles here for a dollar in those terms

Yes, it's called viral marketing. It's the same lead magnet that lead me to paying $1,200 for a 3/4 sleeve design.

            cool

My first tattoo was around 40 years ago, the only marketing we had back then was a dusty street fight, and a milk bar, non of this fancy fb stuff.

So what kind of quiz was it? specifics would help the OP out.. and that's why we are here right?

Personality quizzes have already been mentioned a couple times.

It was a personality type quiz that matched you with a celebrity tattoo. I remember the email sequence basically attempting to open conversation talking about things like the meaning behind tattoos/celebrity tattoos and offering to photoshop (I assume) different tattoos on you. When you responded they went into the whole where/why you want the tattoo and offered design services with a portfolio of their work. It was definitely more personalized once you were on the hook.

So this was a more than a simple quiz ad. This was a full blown funnel.. and that makes sense.

Not that I know for sure but here is how I think this worked... They started at POP Culture ( Celebrity Tattoos ) With the beginning draw being "oh tattoos are what I need to be cool " and then set in education IE the meaning of the tattoo.. which turns the prospects mind away from to be cool I need a tattoo to "what has meaning in my life?" and turns the whole thing from a flighty idea into something emotional. All of the sudden the Tattoo has VALUE and the process of getting there has vetted out those that never get beyond the Tattoos are cool thought.

So in 2 steps into the funnel you are left with people that have created an emotional value on getting a tattoo.. and it then makes sense to offer a service to see the tattoo ( photoshop ) where you want it...

A pretty cool concept that is for sure!

                Not to detract from this:

This is giving value quicker and ALSO placing an amount of value. I could see this being a quick Ad to Action sales funnel vs the more involved quiz funnel concept.

And this comes down to the level of experience of the OP in building out a sales funnel.. but clearly 2 great options for the OP to consider!

                Great Thread!

I have/had a VERY localized business in house washing, and ran lots of FB ads. I rarely if ever traveled more than 20 miles for my service. Before figuring out the bait phrase ect. I learn to calculate timing. This worked well for me resulting in $300-$1000 net days for me for only a few hours of work. My initial fail was not understanding season and timing as it was all exterior work in harsh environments. I've noticed on FB that people tend to ink during phases in their life, and before sun bathing season comes. Every business has down times. Prepare just ahead of the pick up time. For me it was March, and again just before the holidays. Offers and gimmicks didn't matter.

    People follow artists.

    They appreciate the design.

You could offer a signed sketch of the tattoo design as an incentive.

I already see a number of my customers framing and displaying "tattoo art" which shows the value they place on the "creative".

The tattooist usually has to draw up the design anyway so it is an easy add-on or value add to the process.

If it is just a standard design where it repeated often then make the incentive a signed limited edition print of the design but for the original pieces the original artwork is a valuable incentive so could command a premium over and above the tattoo itself.

    Food for thought.

    Best regards,

    Ozi

I get where you are going with this.. but there is no level of vetting here.. Filling out the survey is something to do vs something to do that brings the possible sale to the next level.

My personal experience ( not with a Tattoo Parlor ) is this is closer to getting somewhere. Remember we are talking FB here.. so with some initial targeting of the ad with people that have tattoos you are planting a seed

Regardless of what page and what action or lack there of there is you can place the pixel. And then REMEMBER this is FB you can target those that already HAVE tattoos, meaning those that are more likely to get another.. so by passing the fluff and running the "book a free consultation ad off the get go kinda makes sense here.

IF this were say a Google ad.. YOUR approach would be more solid, I would agree

So now that I have pointed out somethings with the thread.. I guess its my turn to suggest what it is I would do..

Headline "Ideas are Fleeting, Ink is Forever" "Book your free Artistic consult today with Johnny Be Good Tattoos" and then throw in Some trust building element "Voted best Tattoo artist in X for 2017" Or "winner of X award" or something.

Pixel the lander and go from there.

For me this next part is a real big deal.. the creatives for the AD. I can think of more than a few Specific target audiences for this ad set. Biker Girl, Biker Boy, Weight lifter boy, Weight lifter Girl, College Boy, College Girl, Mom, Dad, and the list could go forever.. this is something the OP would have to talk to the Shop owner to nail down more specifically.. I am sure there are a ton of subculture type targeting cues to be found. But anyways you want DIFFERENT creatives for each sub set target

Basically 1 Ad Campaign with 10+ very target specific ads. There is simply a huge difference between "Hey Small town USA check this out" vs "Hey small town USA biker babe check this out" Its a switch from talking AT someone, to talking TO someone. and once you understand and deploy this you WILL see a difference in conversions

    well that's my 2 cents!

    Great discussion!

    Make it fun

    - Create contests: photo contests, commenting contests, liking contests. You want to create things that inspire them to share or participate in.

-With the new Timeline, other people are going to see their friends' likes, shares, and comments.

    Offer an incentive:

-Winner gets a free touch-up, someone gets a discount in your tattoo shop, one of 10 commenters will get a free tattoo, etc.

    - Encourage fans to share pictures of their collections, favorite tattoos. Whatever it is, that could be related to your brand or your web presence.

    Promoting posts really works!

    - You are able to promote a particular post (perhaps you are offering a tattoo for sale) for anywhere from $25.00 to $50.00 to reach a certain amount of your audience. That particular promotion will last anywhere up to 3-4 days.

How long is the artist's wait list? I know my artist is booked out 9+ months, so just getting a spot on her schedule soon would be a big draw. Maybe you could promote that wait list, and have them sign up and they'll also be notified of any cancellations in the artist's schedule - first come, first serve of course. Just a thought.

I understand that people in general want the best deal (price/quality). I feel this can extend to a plethora of items/industry. However, I feel that discounted prices for tattoo's isn't the best route to take due to possible negative connotations. Cheap oil change? Sure! Cheap tattoos? No thanks. Instead, like others mentioned, try to go through a free consultation route with a call to action. Where you could (possibly) go the discounted route is with returning customers. Re-target previous customers to solicit testimonials or referral programs. A remember back in my home town a tattoo artist had a "ugliest tattoo" contest and the winner got a free cover up. The buzz was so strong, the contest made local news (mainly because there was some seriously bad and laughable tattoos). Better yet, when the artist nails the touch up job, he's going to be flooded with work. This was ten years ago and I still remember the event and the business name. Thoughts?

A pretty solid idea... execution for this would be critical.. Probably best if done on Instagram.. and hit up a couple local influencers ( if there are any ) and make it as big as possible!

My first tat was with a converted Gillette razor and a piece of a guitar G string.

What's the first thing new customers do when they walk in a shop?

    Anyone?

They start looking at the available designs (usually posted on the walls).

The inkslingers with the long wait lists have killer original designs. So, if this guy has any, put the best in a book and start giving it away. If he doesn't have any, tell him to get a real job.

When I was looking for a tattoo artist to get mine done, I wasn't interested in discounts. Money was the last thing I took into consideration. The MUST list contained a portfolio of the artist's previous works, for the place to be clean as a an ICU and for the artist to be patient enough to explain the whole process.

I suggest you start with the portfolio and a few pictures of the place - these should do the job!

Let us know how it worked out in the end Good luck!
