Is the affiliate in this scenario owed a commission?

I'm the merchant, and an affiliate sends a visitor to our site, but the visitor doesn't buy. We then pay to retarget the visitor with Google Ads retargeting, and they buy. Since we had to pay to retarget the visitor, is the affiliate still due a commission?

    If the cookie duration on your affiliate program has expired, then no. However, I'm not sure what the standard is otherwise. In other words, if the first click or the last click to your website gets the credit.

    Thanks Sidewalk. I believe the last affiliate click gets credit, but it seems to me that isn't the issue here since I'm not an affiliate of my own site. But if I have to pay to get the visitor to take action, then it seems to me the affiliate may not be the procuring cause of the sale. But I suspect there is some industry standard for this. Hopefully someone here will know.

      There is no industry standard! Its all about doing the right moral thing in your affiliates best interest. You should have tracking software on your site that tracks the link the visitor came from and that includes every link the visitor follows. You only need to find out if the affiliate was credited or not for the sale.

    Its a matter of doing the right (moral) thing for your affiliates. In my business the affiliate always gets the commission for anything and everything regardless of the visitor's cookie. After all, a sale would not have happened without the affiliate.


    Treat your affiliates like you would like to treated and your buiness will gain a great reputation.


    Hope your affiliates never read this post and discover that your company does not hold your affiliates best interest at the heart of your affiliate business.

    First time user landed on your website because of your affiliate and then you get a chance to retarget them. What if there are no users in first place? who would you re-target then ?

    I think clearly your affiliate deserves a commission.

    I'd have to agree that the affiliate gets the commission. They sent you the lead in the first place. It's your choice whether you pay money to retarget them or not. Without the affiliate sending you the lead, you'd have to buy leads yourself, probably at a higher cost too.
