How do you deal with fellow marketers looking to copy your "secret sauce"?

There is a big difference between mimicking and copying a someone. When you discover a method in which you find success online it can be very satisfying although other fellow marketers may ask how you accomplish those results so how do you address them without coming off rude or sharing too much?

People seem to come out of the woodwork when you have something working well for you and there seems to be two ways to think about it.

1) Good, your helping those willing to take massive action obtain success. After all, Plenty of people can copy the actual words in an ad, or the pictures, or even the strategy behind it. But nobody, can ever copy the relationship and bond that you have with your customer base and prospects.

or

2) Keep it to yourself because you invested the time and/or to test what works and what doesn't which could saturate the market by causing more competition for yourself. Worst would be if that fellow marketer steals, copies, or reverse engineers your strategy.

What is your method for handling this situation?

If it is actual 'secret sauce' it will be ripped off

That's just the sad nature of the MMO beast

With that said, if you truly are getting great results and you're already helping your own set of followers, just grow your following.

If you're offering real value, your followers will stick with you and you can monetize it to possibly make the whole process of 'going public' pay for itself

I agree with writeaway, If you have good customer service and they see value in your product then they will stick with you.

Keeping something successful, particularly something pertaining to marketing is a complete impossibility, since your success literally rides upon spreading yourself far and wide.

That which is kept to yourself in that context, will not be successful.

Strategies are something entirely different and you don't need to reveal them to anybody. You're right. They come out of the woodwork real quick, so just pop them back in and tell them that you don't reveal sensitive parts of your business .

I would like to state the opposite here. I am in fact doing quite the opposite. I am very successful with something these days and its been a secret since last 4-5 months. No one has copied me or can possibly copy my method because I have kept a low profile and haven't spread myself far and wide.

Naturally, I'd love to hear what that is, because I'd be confident that you are spreading yourself - at least in one manner which can be replicated, but obviously you aren't going to disclose!

    The answer is very simple.

Share what you want to share and keep secret what you don't want to share.

But don't get to upset if people figure out what you are doing and copy your success. After all you copy other people's success yourself.

    You see...

Someone came up with the idea of getting free traffic from google by creating reviews.
Someone came up with the idea of email marketing.
someone came up with the idea of social media marketing.
    Etc.....

And I am sure you did not just come up with your ideas out of thin air. You copied and expanded on an idea...probably.

Other Mediterranean nations tried copying Roman legions in the Empire era. They outfitted their levies with
identical weapons and armor. But somehow these copiers could never quite grasp the essence of what made the original Romans the real deal...and they never performed as well.

The "secret" wasn't in the equipment. It was in the ideas, the training, the foundational beliefs.

There are other companies that do what mine does. But they can't do it quite the way we do it.

You don't owe anyone anything and if they ask you can politely decline, "That's knowledge we've paid a heavy price to earn"...or say, "Sure, I can show you this stuff on a paid call. Where should I send the invoice?"

And I'm reminded (just interviewed a friend for my show yesterday who had this happen repeatedly at the $100K consultation level) that while people may pay for knowledge, it's rare for them to implement what they learn. They smile, enjoy the experience, feel they've done something...and then do nothing with it.

Have you never copied anyone? Keeping your "secret sauce" to yourself is a bit selfish if you're talking about your subscribers, you should always help and share what you can (dont need to be all the sauce).

Paying it forward pays off in the end, being a selfish prick, doesn't.

This is IM, we ALL copy one another is some way or form, it's part of the game and what makes it exciting.

If you find a new technique that will help people and want to share it then expect they will do what you have shown them.

If you do not want people to do it then do not tell them, it is really that simple

If you were to study the history of large corporations you would see just how wrong you are. President Trump is a great example.

  • If it's out in public it can be copied. There are two ways to correct the issue:

1-Have your lawyer go after them. Most people will not be able to do this.

2-Just keep moving forward. Try to add new information and stay ahead of the curve. It it becomes too saturated start a new business.

Take your information /secret sauce to death bed; nobody will be profiting from it. Good riddance!

I hate people who try to jealously guard their information ( after all what we all learn is the fruit of someone's knowledge)
