What's a good price for website setup?

Usually, when I need a domain setup on my server, I just tell my wife to do it. Unfortunately, we've separated, and that's not something I can just walk over and ask anymore.

So given a dedicated server running Webmin, what's the usual price for someone to take a registered domain and hook it up so the website resolves and mail is delivered?

    $5

Just my guess as actually, I don't really know - takes me about 2-3 minutes if not less so I wouldn't pay anyone more than that to do it.

Usually experts would charge $25 for this. Do I think it is worth that much....not really. It's a pretty fast and easy task, maybe you can learn to do it on your own and save some money.

Learn how to do this for yourself, it's very straight forward.

    I'll show you.

I'll assume you're using Godaddy for your domain names (all registrars have the same features).

And I'll also assume your web host has given you cpanel (all good hosts offer this, or something like it).

    Ready?

Go to your web hosting cpanel account and log in, see the ' domain names' link.. or something like that?

Go there and hit 'addon domains'

Enter in the domain name you want to send live, create the password etc and hit submit.

Now you'll be given some 'nameservers'.

Keep note of these, and go log into Godaddy.

Head to 'domain manager' and click on your domain name. You should now see a 'nameservers' link.. click that and type in the exact nameservers your cpanel gave you.

Hit save, then wait an hour or two.. sometimes it can be longer, sometimes it can be quicker, but eventually things will reset properly and you'll see your domain pointing to the right place.

Now you can set up your site like normal through the cpanel file manager, fantastico deluxe or ftp.

demo and demo for username and pw

I guess you can ftp - I'm not familiar with that particular control panel.

I'm not familiar with control panels at all. The last time I had any day-to-day involvement with a server was about six years ago, and I did everything in vi with the raw text configs. Since my wife was a competent sysadmin, I dropped everything in her lap so I could concentrate on other stuff, and now - "internet time" being what it is - I don't know what needs to be done and where anymore.

On top of that, when you muck about with the raw configs, all sorts of stuff tends to go wrong with automated tools (or at least, that's how it USED to work, back in the day). So I don't want to mess with the raw configs because it may screw up the automated tools, which my hosting customers are using.

I think we already have Virtualmin, so if I go log in there I suppose I could try to hook up one of my unused domains. I think all I have to do is update the BIND records and setup a new server with Virtualmin. I guess I could try; it can't be harder than it used to be.

I *like* webmin, and will suggest that if you can, you get someone to install the free version of 'virtualmin' on top of if. It's dead simple to install if you have a base operating system on the server that virtualmin likes. If not, it's a royal you-know-what.

VirtualMin was designed to help you manage virtual hosting issues, and is built on the base version of webmin, but makes the whole process more logical. Instead of having to go to multiple webmin tabs and screens, it's all done for you in one area.

If I was to pay someone, I'd pay them to get virtualmin on the server, and teach you how to manage that. It's a one-time charge, VM is powerful enough for the basics, and is going to save you some money long term with the DIY approach.
