Whether you're trying to build a new brand or build a steady stream of converting traffic to your online properties, it's too easy to make this CONTENT MARKETING MISTAKE: confuse content distribution for marketing

No. They are not one and the same.

Distribution is exactly that-distributing your content on different platforms. This includes social media, free doc sites, slide show distribution sites, forums, email lists, paid ads, etc.

Marketing is all about building relationships and using those relationships to earn backlinks or prequalifying audience members to TRUST your brand.

Too many 'marketers' don't hassle with relationships because it takes too much time or is uncertain

The problem? If you are like most marketers and you just focus on distribution, you're doing what everybody else is doing... You end up FIGHTING OVER and STRUGGLING for CRUMBS...

Build relationships instead. Find the influencers in your niche. Collaborate with them through collaborative blogging, AMA sessions, Q+A content, co-branded social media campaigns, the only limit is your imagination.

Get this channel going and you'll be surprised how quickly your content can gain traction later on.

    I can't disagree with you totally but you seem to be implying that they are separate endeavors or somehow mutually exclusive. If you are saying don't rely on content marketing alone I can agree with you. But if you are suggesting that retweeting or liking other people's content or gathering a whole bunch of friends on Facebook and, then saying that this is the best way to begin a relationship I'd have to disagree.

    I'd even go a little further and suggest that you're not going develop any relationships with potential buyers or other marketers if you don't have some sort of content creation resume either on your own website or a Facebook pages, etc. You have to give some idea that you know what you're talking about and the more you know the better your chances of building those relationships.

    I'd have to confess that building relationships was the last thing I did. All this automation and all these platforms makes it very easy to stand aside and let your advertising or social media feeds do all the work.

    It may be a newbie mistake, but it pales in comparison to the number of people who get involved and believe they can make a killing in a short period of time. And that pales in comparison the number of people who believe they can make a killing in a short period of time without investing any money.

    creating engaging relationships is what its all about!
    Creating paying/repeat customers and making money is what "It's" all about. You can talk all the "I just want to help people" crap you want. The end goal is always, make money.

    Pretending it's not is just a ploy for clueless newbies.

      Ok, Im not a "Newbie" pretty far from it actually. And I will tell you this its NOT a ploy for dribbling idiots. It can actually be a fine tuned method to create and build long term relationships with potential conversions.. er uh I mean clients. you can run around saying gimme gimme gimme all you want... or you can HELP along the way.. sweeten the path to a conversion. Which do you think ultimately works better?

      You can run around and jump from offer to offer to offer all you want, but I have business models that have been in operation for 20 years now online. and that's 20 years of growth and sales after sales after sales. THAT is the power of relationship building and giving giving giving.

      BUT do I diversify my sales approach? sure I do... I am an opportunist, but keep a look out for the Opportunity for long term growth.

      The "end goal" may be "making money" and "Creating paying/repeat customers." I know for a fact that many of the successful internet marketers in good standing on this forum have never pretended and used the ploy "I just want to help people" to achieve the "end goal."


      Brand is my end goal. Here is why. Building a relationship with a customer by helping them is more than just "building a relationship"... it is a form of "Brand Building".


      Brand Building. What does that mean to a customer that needs a little help? Given a choice between a seller that offers nothing more than the product and a seller that offers a little help, more times than not the customer will select the seller that offers a little help. That help may come in the form of a forum, FAQ, etc.


      New Customers are often referred to a seller from an existing customer. New customers also can become repeat customers. Example: A total beginner asks an intermediate beginner that is 'doing well' in affiliate marketing to recommend a resource that led them to 'doing well'. Seven times out of ten (I know this from my own research) the intermediate beginner will recommend the resource with a brand in good standing.

        The great thing about the points you raised is that all of them can be AUTOMATED and STREAMLINED. This is the key: how to put in the least amount of time effort and money possible while extracting the biggest PROFIT.

    You should only have to "hustle" at the beginning when building your brand and getting all the wheels in motion. If you have to constantly hustle, you are doing something wrong.

    After you develop a business you should just have to fine tune it over time, not start from the beginning.

    The most common mistake new content marketers make is only focusing on the dollar and not focused on building a profitable system.

    Content distribution works well in alot different small niches... niches that people would never think has an audience.

    In situations like this, I think starving website owners who need content to keep their readers - in order to make more money from Adsense/affliates links (examples) wouldn't mind the ability to post an article/content on their site that would keep their visitors coming back everyday.
