You have to go where your ideal prospects are "hanging out" and reach out to them there.

Is it forums? Is it social media? Direct mail?

It really depends on the type of business. Not all advertising channels work for all types of business models. For the most part if you have the budget for it, your safest bet would usually search PPC, because then you know prospects are actually looking for the service or product you are offering

While building an email list is a good idea, it is not advertising. You advertise to build your list. The traffic you get from your list has already responded to your ads at least once.

The best and most effective way for a new business to advertise is through networking events in YOUR niche.

Events like those you see in Meetup.

In case you and other readers wonder what Meetup is, you can do a Google search for it.

But if you are too busy, let me explain briefly.

Meetup is a social media platform like Facebook.

The ONLY difference is people don't just join to interact with one another online like Facebook.

They are there to form or join groups within their interest or problems they faced.

To get to know one another.

It solely depends on what type of business you have. If you are doing business online and looking to target customers from around the world. Then Internet marketing is best for you. Well, it depends on what business are you in. There's a lot of place you can advertise in. For B2B businesses, place like Linkedin, Google Adwords, or even Craigslist could be your choice. For B2C, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram is a good platform to advertise with.

My suggestion is to go with a platform at a time. Don't try to do all of this simultaneously. Mater one traffic source before you move on to other sources. And test with a small budget first, before you put all of your money into it.

Radio Advertising is my suggestion for the best and most effective way for a new business to advertise be it online or offline. Radio reaches something like 90% more people compared to all forms of advertising.

WebFX conducted case studies of different websites in different niches that advertised on the radio. The short of the studies reflected an 80% increase of website traffic.

All advertising methods have their pluses and minuses. Radio advertising is very expensive for the majority of new small businesses. The location (reach) that you advertise determines the cost of the ad. Typically speaking a one or two minute ad can cost a few hundred dollars in small cities up to a few thousand dollars in large cities. Also consider the majority of people hear the ads when driving. Cities where the main mode of transportation are taxis are the least desirable reach criteria.

In a nutshell, for every 1K adspend the return is an average 6K. Of course that figure is subjective because everything else must be optimal.

There is only one type of advertising ANY business should use: DIRECT RESPONSE. This is when you advertise to get a person to do something specific, such as call a toll-free number, visit your website or come to your store.

You can do direct response advertising online or offline. Personally, I like direct mail the most, because you can target your audience and get something in their HANDS.

Online advertising works, but it has less stickability and a shorter shelf-life. Just my two cents.

You didn't say what kind of business. Many people think that right off the bat they need a website. Maybe, maybe not. Print advertising and offering services on the big free site can be as effective as anything else and cheaper by a long shot. A lot depends on your target audience and who you've got doing the actual promotion.
