Newly Created Parked Domain Valued at $1500 According To GoDaddy Is This Accurate?

There is no magic that turns a newly registered $15 or so domain into a $1500 prize. If you've tried to sell for similar 'appraisals' before, you know it doesn't work.

Godaddy sells domains - I'm sure they have a software/bot for 'appraising' domains - but I do believe it's based on fiction. Unfortunately, many new IMers see these 'appraisals' and immediately believe they have a knack for 'domain flipping'.

I had a similar response to some of my domains. Personally I think they were kind of "inflated." Then there's the problem of actually selling the domain.

As a former GRI (Graduate Realtors Institute) one of the first lessons of real estate is the market value and the appraised value can vary greatly.

And with virtual real estate, a domain, it is just like in the real world, WHO is doing the appraisal and WHY?

Governments do them for TAX purposes. Banks do them for protection (should).

It wasn't that long ago we had the big real estate crash, and there were so many homes underwater (aka upside down mortgage, where they owed more than the house was worth by both appraisal and market values)...

A domain is worth what you get for it, if you plan on flipping it.

NO one who actually buys domains believes that appraisal crap.

It means nothing.

If it has any value, then either USE it or flip it for a fast, albeit small, profit.

You might think twice about Godaddy's valuation, but you can always use it when trying to sell the domain if you are so inclined.

"The Greater Fool Theory simply states that there will always be a "greater fool" in the market who will be ready to pay a price based on higher valuation for an already overvalued security."

Sounds kind of mercenary but it's really just business. I wouldn't spend a lot of time promoting the domain (though I don't know what it is), but you can always add it to Afternic, Sedo, etc.

Yes,

unfortunately the appraisals are often inflated.

One good way to find the value of a domain is to look on the Flippa.com website where you will see domains for sale, some with bids on and also what domains have sold for.

Flippa also sells websites - so you can get a good idea of the current market values for both.

No, that is the price they paid.

Value is an opinion. And opinions are just that, opinions.
They can be based on nothing but vague memories, for instance.

Not so long ago, someone paid over 150k dollars for a 60 bucks yellow dress because the seller, accidently?, included her naked silhouette in the mirror next to the dress.

The price the seller paid is a fact. The price the idiot paid her is a fact.

The value of the dress? To me, $0, to her 60, to idiot 150+ k.

Long way to say Godaddy' s ideas of value of a domain have nothing to do with mine or yours.

Which is not to say its valuations don't make it money, don't get some people to buy another domain.

Here's another unregistered (at the time of posting) domain Godaddy says could be worth $1416:

Even this domain could be worth it, but to find the right buyer is the problem. And if you do not find a buyer in a year, then the renewal cost kicks in (been there, done that).

PS! I can find so many domains like this that I at one point pondered about posting lists of them on my blog each day to bring some traffic, and to stop myself from buying them. In the end, i stopped getting them, and decided domaining wasn't for me.

I have a number of domains parked with Godaddy and one other place. Occasionally an offer is made though. I kept one around for about ten years always intending to "do something with it" and of course I never did. One day Godaddy hits me up with an offer which made my head spin! The offer was over 100X what I had invested in keeping the darned thing for ten years. I was all like "YEAH BABY!" and took the money! I know, I'm such an internet whore........................

Yeah, l deleted a domain today, (thanks to Hostgator, or let's just say the Baby Croc account got its neck slit today, they are still pestering me to keep it with slightly reduced prices, but the domain is gone so...) on Godaddy and then all my remaining listings got supposed valuations put on them.

Some usually a couple of hundred but one or more almost $1000, but as others have said a nightmare to sell.

I also very recently created a new domain name, and after trying to get around the scum registering all of the best ones, finally got around it and found something that worked, (as l said very few apart from Corporations with a lot of cash are going to spend 1k on a name when they only need to change a letter or two and reduce it to $15.

So yeah a crock, so to speak.

I will be deleting another two this week, so l can afford the Microsoft complaint crock,......price increase, so it has been an eventful week!

Has anyone had any experience with Rami Steitieh from DNBB - Domain Name Black Book. He apparently has been domaining for many years and now (2 years ago) started selling a domaining course.The webinar is long on sales and short on anything meaningful. And of course every question you ask of him is non specific and covered with the catch all phrase - "I cover that in the course".

If the domain was worth $1500 why would Godaddy sell it for $10 - 15??? This does not make business sense. When you sell a house or a car - you attempt to get as close to the Appraised Value as possible - not discount it by 90%

An estimate is just an estimate. It is meant to give direction based on opinion/guess/algorithm, and has nothing to do with the actual value.

A domain is worth as much as someone is willing to pay.

I've been in the domain biz for 20 years now & think these automated appraisals are nonsense. They either overvalue crap names or undervalue good names. With that said - everyday crap names I wouldn't register sell for thousands of dollars.

Back to GoDaddy appraisals - let me give an example of a domain that I have had 6 figure offers on as well a signed 7-figure value lease/profitshare deal (which I canceled due to payment issues). What does GoDaddy say for this name... Estimated Value: $12,886.

Their nonsense tool also "severely" undervalues other domain names of mine which I have received offers or actually sold in the $XX,XXX range.
