You may mistake to target for audience. Can you start to paid campaign[Google, Bing] to targeting audience. That will be better to real Australian traffic.

How are you advertising? Are you doing pay per click advertising? Are you advertising on sites that reside in your area (assuming Australian)? Something is wrong with your targeting options.

Because your backlinks are from US may be because of that only you are getting traffic from United States

This would happen because your website is open for everyone if you don't want to get the traffic from these countries so you should go to your web analytics and banned the IPs from these countries so your analytic never show you the irrelevant traffic

In addition to what's already been said, your site might be appearing in search results for USA or Indian traffic.

You can't really do much about that besides block Google from crawling your site.. I wouldn't do that... do this instead:

Start to increase your local citations.

    You could:

Set up a Google Business Profile in Google Places.

Go to Webmaster Tools and set the International Targeting to your country.

    Get listed on country-relevant directories.

Add your country name to your posts.

Also make sure your website is hosted on a server in your country... the effectiveness of this might be up for debate, but there's no harm in doing it.

I'm sure some of the SEO guys here will give you advice too. Good luck.

Might be, its a problem of backlinks. Check out the posted backlink sources. It might be from the USA and India. So that your traffic comes from USA and India.
