How to define a target group?

Hello guys!

So, a friend and I released a website, which focuses on sporting goods. We agreed that our next move should be defining a target group.
Now my question: How do we do this? Are there websites, which help us to find out more about this? Should we join forums? Should we analyze other websites?

Im thankful for every response!

Defining your target market should have been the first move..

...otherwise you've no idea if the business is worthwhile concept.

Why did you decide to establish the website focused on sporting goods?

    Hello Jakob

    Sporting Goods is so broad.

It's going to be easier to target your market when you can define them.

I'd niche this out to just one sport.

I'd pick an audience you're part of or want to be part of. Say you really like hockey or street hockey. Target that group and serve them! Nobody is into just 'sporting goods'. It's too generic.

I'd just target people searching on Google for heart rate watches. I'd do a shopping ad campaign to target those further along in the purchasing phase, and search ad campaign for those who are earlier in the purchasing phase.

You should go with the google keyword planner where need to know where actually specified keywords search more and easily target that country

You should have started with defining the group...

Maybe you can still get it right.

If you already have a product/products, you have to ask yourself who is willing and able to buy them?

If you're selling dumbbells only, you might think everybody who wants to stay or get in shape is your audience.

    But...

You'd be better off if you looked at it this way:
There are women who want to stay/get in shape
There are men who want to do it.
Some of the women / men are young and want to do it because they wanna get sex or married. Some do it because of that and because they want to run a marathon.
Some are older, have diabetes and a bum knee. And they want to get in shape because their doctor told them they're going to be dead within 5 years if they do not.

Each of the above is motivated, but by different things.
You'd be talking/marketing to each group differently.

So, what products do you have?

If you don't already have products, who do you want to sell to and what and why?

You can look on amazon.com and see what products sell: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers/zgbs, then figure out who they appeal to.

  • Not knowing your Solitary Target BEFORE you start any marketing tactic or strategy, is a bit like being a fantastic golfer, with long drives and a knack for chipping out of bunkers onto the green, but then struggle to get the ball into the hole.

You could do everything else right, and still keep losing.

Imagine you are having trouble sleeping because you're stressed out with work, and you ended up on a website that sells hypnosis products.

    You're presented with four options:

Option 1: How to Cure Insomnia and Sleep Like a Baby.

Option2: Drift Off to Sleep and Dream Without Interruption

Option 3: Quiet Mind. How to Sleep Through the Night

Option 4: Having Trouble Sleeping Because You're Stressed Out From Work?

So, with money in hand, which option do you choose?

You choose the option that calls out your specific problem. All four products may be exactly the same, but only ONE of the products (option 4) calls out to you, specifically.

    That's the one you buy.

Competing products become irrelevant when you speak directly to a specific problem your Solitary Target has.

  • Okay so since we are at the beginning of our journey we are willing to go with a new product. We will define our target group through researching and based on our knowledge we will build up a website.
