I have about 2,000 visitors per month to a blog in the fitness niche, but not really related to my main content.
I just did a random post like "20 best jokes about Men's fitness" and Google liked it and put it number one.
But now I find I can't monetise it, if I put products no-one buys, presumably because they didn't arrive to buy products and if I put joke books, no one buys.

What would you do with these non buyer intent visitors?

Well, that is to be expected since those are not your intended target audience. There is not much you can do about your visitors if they won't convert into a sale. It's best to rethink your strategy and focus on targeting the right audience.

Try offering something for free to build your list!

I think what you need to do is keep these visitors in your CRM or database and be sure to flag them as such. Like, "joke visitors". Whatever can show you these guys came from a non related article. Its a long shot but build out a fun email campaign for them or something on social media. You may not be getting sales but traffic is traffic and you may be able to get them to convert later or refer others to your site. I say flag them and see what creative campaigns can just keep them engaged. Incentives never hurt or do a survey asking them some fitness questions. I don't think they are a total loss. You just need to know more about them.

I'm also in fitness market. You're probably right that your visitors aren't looking to buy when they arrive on your site. So, can you warm them up with some type of lead magnet and funnel?

For the longest time, I didn't focus on using a lead magnet for search traffic. I didn't really worry about it since it was 'free' and kind of thought of those sales as 'bonuses'.

But ever since I started using paid traffic (and watching my money go down the drain when visitors didn't convert), my main focus has been getting everyone who visits my site to opt in to my list.

An opt in pops up, its on the main header sitewide and on the sidebar for every blog post.

Then anyone who opts in gets a very valuable eBook which could easily sell for $35. It segways into my products. In fact, you need my products if you want to achieve what's in the ebook. Then they get 14 follow up emails consisting of info and various sales offers.

This has worked wonders for me. And I get a lot of traffic that's not looking to buy. They're mostly looking for information like 'best chest exercises' or 'weight lifting for runners'.

What I recommend is creating the most valuable piece of content you can for the people visiting your site. Then, promoting the crap out of it.

      Yes, I like this idea.
I did use to have an getresponse email account but because their software wasn't mobile responsive I dropped them. do you know any autoresponders that do mobile responsive?

I've used Aweber and MailChimp. Prefer the simplicity of MailChimp, though. Both of them just connect to the form I have on my site (WordPress). So, there's no need for them to be mobile responsive since the site is.

You can also use an adaptive ad rotator system that optimizes which ads to show based on your audience's behavior

This eventually leads to your site showing ads people will engage with

You should use Adsense on your posts. Otherwise, sell service or products that's related to your traffic.

Aweber would probably be your best bet. Plus, they give you free month to start.

Like said above, definitely take advantage of that traffic with a lead magnet targeted for who you are seeking. This way you can at least weed out some of the wasted traffic and start building a list to shift to your funnel and or offer.

You can also segment your list by simply offering your general list niche specific offers that are lead magnets and straight offers. This way you can target your lists more specific and start breaking down the large amount of traffic already getting.

Your keyword "men's fitness" is too broad a term and it also has high competition for all related keyword ideas (I ran a search on Google adwords). Not only that, the page where Google lists the results doesn't show any paid ads. This would be good for a keyword search with 450,000 results, not 23,000,000 as is your case.
Your results are typical of a niche that is hard to monetize because of diversity in the buying audience. I would drop my random post to work with narrower keywords in my content: 10k-100k in monthly searches, low competition and no paid ads.

Do you lead these visitors to other parts of your site with more serious content. Once you get them there you should be getting them on your list

Do you have any tracking set up? This can tell you how long the viewers are staying on your site as well as what and where they are going. If you have a high bounce rate that means people either jumping straight off or the traffic is coming from someplace else....
