Marketing strategies for $500.000+ B2B products?

How do you market products that are sold for $500.000+ that are aimed at a very small B2B audience? Does it make sense to build an audience with content marketing?

I am looking for articles or advise for marketing this kind of B2B products, but it seems like most blogs and strategies out there, are more about info-products, e-commerce or B2C items.

Update: Thank you guys for your answers and sorry for the confusion. So just to clarify, it should have been a comma, the product or software is going for around $500,000 (half a million). It is aimed at a small audience of companies (and governments) in the transportation sector. Of course, I know who these potential buyers are. Does it make sense at all to go the content marketing route, even if its only for brand awareness and SEO? Any suggestions for a marketing funnel?

  • FredBizzy,

It's really almost impossible to come up with strategic, actionable ideas when all I know is that it's a 500 USD product that's aimed at a small B2B audience.

So I guess I need to fill in the blanks there. And here goes:

Let's say I'm selling a $500 monthly tech content writing and open source community engagement service package where buyers know what to expect at the end of each week; and

Say this product is targeted at small to medium-scale tech startups with IoT services through their API products, and their focus at the moment is to generate some buzz from open source developer communities.

Now what I think I'll do at this point is formulate an organic community engagemen campaign that's supplemented by a paid advertising run across the same communities; and

The first platforms I'll check out to verify if my target audience is hanging out at those places include LinkedIn Groups and Facebook Groups

So as soon as I confirm this, what I'll do is participate in relevant, meaningful discussions in those communities; and
Once I steadily build up my reputation in those places as a friendly expert resource of helpful info and advice, I'll then promote my 500 USD product through LinkedIn InMail, sponsored listings, paid ads and placements across those platforms ...

It's a fall at the first hurdle since you don't know that neither, since he stated that the product price is Half a Million Dollars or above - albeit incorrectly with the decimal point wrongly placed where a comma should be.

Fred, as mentioned, you'll need to provide more information to attract relevant answers.

      • And you tripped right next to me. LOL! You don't know that as well.
It could be a correct decimal point and just an erroneous extra 0.

It's highly unlikely that such an error would occur twice both in the thread title and post.

Hopefully the OP will garner something useful from your post nonetheless based upon you assuming he meant $500 even with lack of information provided.

If this in fact a $500,000 product that you are selling for B2B, I think (hope) you know the EXACT market who is buying this product. I feel even "market" is a big word as you can probably make a list of all the businesses who have a budget to spend $500,000 on your product or service.

In this case, I don't feel there is a lot you can do to get these customers online. This is more about getting yourself physically in front of the decision maker, and even then, getting a business to buy that kind of product from someone they just met will be a challenge in itself.

I'm anxious for this IM forum to prove me wrong and provide examples of a business owner who browses online or on social media and comes across an ad or a blog, clicks or reads, goes through a funnel and buys a $500,000 product/service. If this is a thing, I will need to re-think my IM game!

If this is actually a $500 product, then your options for marketing are limitless, my friend.

I've seen it happen. But not a one-time purchase though.
Instead, a 5-month multi-lingual telesales service contract with 15 Japanese speakers, 10 German speakers and 10 French speakers.
Each agent at 3K USD / month.

And deal was an advance payment for each month, but a renewable service contract for 5 months.

And I know this because it happened to me.
Check out my sig link where I was featured by BBC Business Service.
Yeah, all through organic LinkedIn community engagement, paid LinkedIn sponsored ads and InMail.

How is $3k per month paid to each worker related to selling a Half a Million Dollar + product in a funnel?

          The funnel goes like this:
Sponsored LinkedIn Ad >> Email Conversation >> Phone Appointment >> 525K USD 5-Month Contract for a Telesales Team with 15 Japanese Speakers, 10 German Speakers & 10 French Speakers

          Understood?

P.S. If you don't know how the B2B BPO multi-lingual telesales industry works globally, then majority of telesales centers with non-English speakers here in SE Asia require a minimum 3 to 5-month contract for a minimum 30 or so agent team with an average 1-month lead time and a 1 to 2-month deposit arrangement or a 1-month advance payment system; and
          • That's because it costs a lot of money and non-fiscal resources to build, train, set up and manage a team of more than 30 non-English speaking agents (much more challenging to source out than English speakers, actually) in a month ...

Waiting for the 'anything is possible if you just believe' crowd to post....

Assuming $500k - and really why ask a question if you don't properly list the $$ you are asking about?

    No to 'content marketing'

Yes to connections, a real reputation in that field, lots of ad money and time and a business name/address/site that would be viewed as 'valid' by another business.

Keeping it simple, the above is the clincher, since you are dealing in monthly / 5 month sums.

Your acquisition is essentially, just a reply to an advert which marks the task complete.

In contrast, selling a Half Million Dollar product in one instance, several times over (possibly to fresh leads) is an entirely different dynamic.
