Hi guys,
Just a quick question that i keep thinking about.. When i start a WP-blog open up the dashboard what the first thing i do create and post or create a page ?
This might sound stupid as i would normally create a post first but i just want to see if anybody does it different.

cheers jim

Posts and pages are usually different things if you're going for the traditional blog style of site. Pages are used for things like the privacy policy, the About page, etc. So I guess what you do first depends on whether you want to start adding content straight away, or whether you want to get the necessary pages done and the blog ready for the off. I always do the pages and optimizing first.

I always do the privacy policy, terms and conditions, etc. pages first so that they are out of the way before moving onto the posts.

Make a post and delete "Hello World".

    something like this...

    delete 'hello world' post
    delete 'about' page
    delete default links
    change 'just another wordpress blog'
    check privacy settings
    change permalinks
    install theme
    adjust settings for theme
    install plugins
    adjust settings for plugins
    add some content
forget about blog for next three months

Same here. I do the same thing.

First is deleting the hello world, then all else will follow depending on you.

    The VERY first thing?

Well, after doing an installation following either one of the following systems:

    * BlogLockDown (extremely good level of security - easy to follow instructions)

    * WordpressSecured (for a superior level of security - user should be somewhat tech-savvy)

... the very first thing is to install the following plugin: Smart Ping Updater. Seriously.

Make a Page titled /newsletter/ or /free-ecourse/ or however you're building an optin list off the site and stick that to the front of your blog in the "Reading" section (Select a static Page...)

This will have a nice little squeeze page sit there in the index page location while you populate your blog with stuff and mess around "behind the scenes." When you want to start posting, just change the settings to "Latest blog posts..." and you're good to go. This page will then sit there in the background and you can easily stick it on the front page of the site if you need to.

Then go through the steps jasonmorgan suggested.

It does depend on whether you plan to use the WP-installation as an actual blog-type-blog or a CMS, though. I have a site that doesn't use posts at all, for example. Everything is posted to pages.

Good luck with it! I have a love-hate relationship with WP. I hope you get into the groove!
