Cross-linking own domains - how many are too many?

I have quite a bunch of sites and need to launch new ones next. The easiest way to get some results fast for the new ones, is to link to them from the existing ones.

I wonder what is the threshold for you in interlinking your own sites for SEO purposes (and not trigger a penalty).

So far I've always used 2 dofollow links to new sites (and accidentally 3) from some good DA domains I had. It worked, and never got a complaint from Google.

Question is: How many have you used? Where is the threshold?

TIA

It is best to use nofollow attribute otherwise Google will ignore and in both scenario, you will not get any benefit in ranking.
