What are some "don'ts" of building your ideal customer profile?

What are some of the mistakes made when building and ideal customer? I need also to know specifically how we make sure I don't create a profile that I've seen online but that there may exist very little people like that and it may not be profitable.

  • Don't be vague about who they are.

Make it a real person. Someone you know inside out. Someone who you can interview to uncover problems they experience on an emotional level.

If you create an avatar on demographics, you are doing it wrong.

A 43 year old teacher earning $30k a year is NOT a person you can target effectively.

Many people with similar demographics will have COMPLETELY different reasons for wanting to lose weight.

I want to lose weight because being fat chips away at my self esteem.

I want to lose weight because my husband/wife will leave me for a younger, more attractive person.

I want to lose weight because I'm missing out on spending quality time with my children.

Those 3 problems (reasons for wanting to lose weight) can be had by 3 different people with the SAME demographics.

The smart approach to targeting is to pick ONE problem your product solves, for ONE person, and go deeper with that problem than anyone else does.

Does that mean you have to go narrower?

The narrower you go, the MORE targeted your marketing will be.

What if there aren't enough people with that specific problem?

Nearly 4 billion people online, I think you'll be fine.

Another approach would be to list out all the problems your product solves, narrow it down to the top 3 problems, and create 3 different ads.

    • and if let's say my client is, "I want to lose weight because being fat chips away at my self esteem."

What process do you use to find information to create content, sales pages etc... that come specifically with that profile?

Can you make yourself relate-able to this specific client? Do you have stories you can share with them based on your own experiences with this?

You research. You interview. It's your product though, right? You should have a handle on this already. The product - how to lose weight - doesn't necessarily have to change, just the messaging.

Create content based on something you know. If its a niche you are familiar with then content will come naturally to you. You won't find as many mental blocks if you're growing your business or following on an already solid foundation

I think one of the greatest mistakes that people make is that they don't take care of the needs of their ideal customers. Ensure you include aspects that will make your ideal customer happy.

    1) Thinking that all USA leads are equivalent to 3rd World country leads

    2) Selling to countries in bulk where Paypal is banned

    3) Not taking consideration to what your prospect base really wants

    4) Lack of understanding the real needs/wants of a market

    5) Not staying on top of the marketplace and following the changes in it

You need to create a profile based on your subject. Create content unique and then you get a great stream of customers.
