    Uncommon Service=Less Competition=Fewer Clients

So I think you need to start by targeting the right customers using Facebook Ad. If your service is related to housing improvement, I guess you can find real estate agency leads and target them.

The website was launched not a long time ago, I have tried FB ads, but it did not work out very well.

My oil painting customization service is related to art, not the housing improvement.

One suggestion: give us some more info.

What kind of oil paintings? What sort of customization? Who is doing the painting? How will you ship this globally>

So, in order to get to the right TARGET, we need to know how much this costs, what is the deal, and why you? All that jazz, OK?

One area YOU might want to consider is, customized paintings of your favorite football (futbol) stars/teams with maybe the fan (buyer) in the painting too.

Tell us a little bit more, or not.

      Thanks for your question.

Our service : Turn the photo into oil painting on canvas. We have signed a bunched of artists who have been doing oil painting over 10 years.

The price is on my website ($100-$500 based on size, background, etc), once the customer upload the photo/ send the photo email and select the size, and finished option (rolled, gallery wrap, framed), the total price will be shown automatically. And the customer only need to pay a part of the price as the deposit. We will send the photo of finished work to customer (allow multiple corrections ). The customer will pay the remaining if they are happy with the work and the oil painting will be shipped to them straight away. Free shipping worldwide.

Any suggestion with this service ?

Yea, several suggestions. But first, you have chosen a field with a LOT of competition, on Google alone, there were FOUR ads in the listings along with 20 offers on the side, which takes one to Google shopping.

The good news, high demand, apparently. Bad news, price wars. From a low of 49 to upper end of 199. Then, add in the frames, which is a big business by itself. Warrior oziboomer is our resident expert on framing, he might be able to shed some light on the market.

I went to over a dozen sites, NOTHING popped out, all look and feel the same. They can turn photos into oil paintings. Seems like a commodity. Exceptions are ARTISTS, individuals who offer very upper end projects over four figures. From what you have told us, you have a bunch of people at the ready to do this. Correct?

My suggestion is a bit Old World. I'd be inclined to set up separate NICHE sites for the most popular and PROFITABLE type of work.

I'll give you one example, OK? Pets. realpetart dot com and poochface dot com are two examples of sites focused on PETS. Fact is, any of the 15 sites I visited could do it, but these two pop out of the crowd because they are T A R G E T E D, which is what you want to do.

Same thing for KIDS, or specialize in Kids with Grandparents (who might have the means to afford a higher priced keepsake) or have site for people and CARS.

Or with their horses. Sure, one site can have different galleries, as they all do. But if you want to stay in this game for the long haul, you need to learn 3 things. Warrior Jason Kanigan (read as much as you can from him) says "positioning is everything" when it comes to building a brand, your IM, your biz...

        WHAT IS YOUR POSITION

in this over crowed commodity marketplace?

How about targeting YACHT owners, people with planes? I like to find targets with the money to spend on what I offer, and aim for the upper ends.

One 2500 dollar aerial painting of an old farm, beats doing 10 paintings at 250, eh?

So, where do you fit in to this market? I do know this, if you don't differentiate yourself from the scores of others doing this, you are going to have a hard time making it sustainable.

        GordonJ

PS. Oops, forgot the 3 things: 1> Leads (traffic) 2> customers (conversions) 3> lifetime value (upsells, cross sells, multiple sales)

What lead do you want? I might want affluent pet owners, and price myself accordingly, and create a site just for them...today, with all the hosting options, and sub domains, it is quite easy to set up multiple sites.

Thanks so much for your useful suggestion. I understand it is easy to set up several sites. Unfortunately, I have no idea regarding how to set up separate NICHE sites.

You also mentioned YACHT owners, people with planes, but the thing is how to find them ?

In your previous thread, you mentioned customized paintings of your favorite football star with the fans seems to be a good idea. The fact is how to I get in touch with those football star ? Also, I could not afford the ads as they must be very expensive.

          Any suggestion ?

I would do any of the following things.

    1. Look for websites with people in your niche and advertise on their sites.
    2. Create a few YouTube videos and give them the proper titles, tags and descriptions so people in your target market can find them.
    3. Consider writing a few articles on your own blog, or even guest post on another blog in your niche.
    4. Use Facebook and Google ads to find new clients.
    5. Advertise in offline print media, such as magazines or journals for people in your niche.
    6. You could also buy a mailing list and do a postcard campaign for people in your niche.

    I hope that helps.

  • I suggest you also look into communities that has a demand for this but aren't normally served by your industry. Interior decorators and contractors for example. Most are often dependent on what's on stock locally. But if you can offer customized paintings in bulk amounts, that could be your advantage.

      That's an creative idea.

We can do bulk order and have done it before.

Do you have any interior decorators/contractors communities to recommend ?

Have you ever considered influencer marketing? Influencers who are into that niche (oil painting) will definitely have an already targetted audience.

Selling any kind of art online, especially converting photos to oils is a saturated, and at best, weak market.

    Why?

    * New software makes it easy to create an oil-painting effect on any photo. Fine Art America offers the same services. Dozens of other do at bottom-feeding prices, being produced in sweat shops throughout the world.

    * The art market online is super saturated, making any art, the venue of the cheapest seller -- and there are tons of them.

    * The demand for such a service is minimal - see first 2 points.

I have sold original art online for 7 years and have watched my Google Shopping Ads, Facebook Ads and other print-on-demand platforms stop performing for me. In fact, many of the sites are limiting artist to the number of artworks they can post! That should tell you something.

I am in the process of closing down my sites and stopping my online ads, which are not recouping their cost, never mind earning a profit.

Not a good market for art.

I know this is not the answer you want, but it is the truth as I have experienced it.

Thanks for sharing your own experience.

I understand it is a bit saturated market for art. If taking price, quality and speed into consideration, I still believe our oil painting customization service is competitive compared with others.

The website was launched not a long time ago, I hope I can make it through the hardest time, namely the beginning time.

Instagram would be the way to go for finding a target audience. You could start posting your works there. I think Facebook ads won't really do much as this niche really has fewer clients than usual. You can also try other social media outlets like Pinterest or Deviantart.

Pinterest is quite popular for Interior designers and Artists. Pretty much almost at par with instagram and their community is quite active.

Deviantart though is a very old but is still quite popular and has a very large community. Most of the users here are more in the form of digital art and underground art. But as an artist, you may be able to find like minded individuals seeking inspiration from none digital art (but I'm pretty sure a lot of people there also does non digital art).

Have you thought about having wedding photographers sell for you/ work with you/ introduce you, for a fee, to their clients? Or you do a white label thingie with them? Or just convince them to stick your business card in their marketing packages?

You should choose SMO & SMM. Also, Facebook ads ask for efforts and experiments to bring in the maximum ROI. You can't run them once and say, 'they are worthless.'

The main objective of your business is to figure out your target audience and SMM is a good trick for it. You can use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (highly recommended) to grow.

    Hello Albatross

My advice will not be about how to find a target audience, you are not ready for that yet.

First, your website (domain) name: DavePainting.

Absolutely awful as far as branding goes. It sounds to me that you are a one man house painter, and one who is not very creative at all, in that you couldn't even come up with a name that is catchy and would stand out from the crowd.

It doesn't give any indication or even clue to what your site is about. As an example, say if you were looking to target the pet market (a great niche as others have suggested). What name do you think would get the most attention from pet owners? DavePainting or a name like PetArt?

Second, your home page is rubbish. I don't mind the graphical Header (I like the idea of it but not that specific example) but then it really goes down hill. You have 3 seconds to make an impression on someone before they just leave your site and go looking elsewhere. You hardly say what you do, let alone give any reasons as to why they should buy your service. I absolutely HATE the "3 Simple Steps" shown in HUGE type. You can certainly mention the 3 simple steps but not like you are listing them so they can be read by a blind person.

Your Home Page should be showing a Photo then Painting comparison. It should be selling, giving an emotional reason as to why they should use your service, for instance that might be to immortalize a deceased pet, (or person) or a very much loved live one - cat, dog, horse and so on) or to celebrate some special occasion (wedding, baby, milestone occasion like an special anniversary, whatever.

If I were doing this I would have niche websites, one for pets and one for people. I might even go further with the pets, one for cats, one for dogs, one for horses. That way you seem to specialize to a customers specific niche. You would link out to your other websites.

I will mention targeting, say for pets. You can target Facebook Groups that cater to different pet types, some have hundreds of thousands of members. Most Groups allow you to post but if not do a deal with the Group owner. He places Ads for your service and gets a commission for every sale. Do the same with other website owners, don't penny pinch on their commissions, make it very worthwhile to them to promote your services.

Heaps of ways to promote but first fix your site or you will likely make very little from it.

    Cheers
    Lindy

      Hello

I have changed my name and style of my homepage, they can be reached at :
      www.ptoppainting.com

It would be much appreciated if you have any more suggestion for my new website design, name, etc.

By the way, I have joined some fb page groups, and found most groups are controlled by several admins, and tried to message them, finding it's hard to get a reply, let alone the discussion of sales deal. Any suggestion ?

LindyUK gave you great advice about the domain, but I'm sorry to say you blew it on your second name choice. The one you have chosen is awkward, unappealing in appearance, hard to immediately remember, has no clear meaning because of the awkwardness of putting a letter beside "top," and numerous other reasons, etc. It is no better than the first one and probably even worse for your purposes.

However, given the circumstances and how hard it can be to find a good one available, I have found a very good and meaningful one that would be 1,000 times better for you. I will not say it here now because there is a risk someone else might grab it first, so I will send it to you in a PM now after this post.

        Later:

Okay I just sent you a PM with the domain I found for you. It is available to register.

        PS, later again:

I also just found another really good one. You are going to want both, but I will wait to see how you reply to the first before saying anything. If I were in the same business I would get them myself, no question about it.

I saw your PM. Thanks so so so much for you useful advice.

Your new name suggestion is better than my current one indeed.

I understand the importance of domain name, my current focus is on how to develop the market. If you have any other advice for developing the market in this field, please reply to this or PM me, both are much appreciated.

          Thanks again

The problem is not what domain name you should register, just forget it.
All you need to do is branding it, only with brand awareness, your shit name can be also well known.
No need to pay a lot of attention on domain name.
