What Are My Obligations to "My" Affiliates?

When I set up my sales page for my most recent product, I tried to do everything right for the affiliates.

There is no opt-in on the sales page, which affiliates appear to dislike because they fear it will lose them commissions.

There is no affiliate page link on the sales page, which affiliates appear to dislike because they think people will substitute their own affiliate ID and cost the referring affiliate their commission.

And, I have a special affiliate area with some additional content and graphics with a mailing list where I can keep in touch with them.

Mind you, this product is on Clickbank, so technically they are Clickbank's affiliates, but they are still "my" affiliates in the sense that they are promoting my product.

I only have a small number of affiliates, but I really haven't gone after affiliates in a big way yet. I've got about 100 of them.

Not one of them has signed up on the mailing list.

So, what is my obligation to them? I mean, if I change the price on my product, I can't give my affiliates advance notice, which I think would be especially helpful if the price goes down and, thus, their commissions would go down. Likewise, if I update the product or add anything to it, I can't notify the affiliates on that either.

Of course, if they've chosen not to signup on my list, they probably can't complain about not getting any advance notice, right? I mean, they can complain, but it's not like they didn't avail themselves of the opportunity to receive info from me, which would include such important details.

You are exactly right. If I were one of your affiliates, then I

would want to know about any updates. If they don't sign up,

then they aren't that concerned and therefore will just have to

find out the hard way. That's just my opinion, but I like to stay

    informed.

      Hi Dan

I'd say your only obligations would be to provide a quality product, truthfully described; a reliable tracking mechanism and prompt payment.

You might also include an affiliates TOS in which you could mention that you reserve the right to alter the price/format of the product, but would in such a case, inform all affiliates who have signed up for updates.

Other than that, the additional services you offer, such as marketing material, sales copy, email text etc may help to attract more affiliates, but IMO, don't fall under the description of obligations.
