Best business model to sell Wordpress plugins

Hi, fellow Warriors - hope you're well.

I have recently come across these two business models, and wanted your opinion on what's "best".

Model 1:

- Create a Wordpress plugin

- Set up an affiliate program for it

- Do a product launch

- Rinse and repeat 10+ times

Model 2:

- Create 10 Wordpress plugins

- Create one single offer for a "membership" where people can signup and get access to all plugins. Examples of this:

thrivethemes.com/membership-pricing

premium.wpmudev.org

- Set up an affiliate program for this one single membership so affiliates can promote it (evergreen - not product launch)

- Do content marketing

  • It is also possible to make a combination of these models.

    You can for example create a core plugin, and then develop addons.
    Example: wpdatatables.com/addons/
    Example: wpbakery.com/addons/

    For those who want everything, you could also offer an option to purchase all, and have this as a high price & high value product that also will be attractive for affiliates.

  • Both of the Business Models are good. I think you should also try to offer buy 1 get 1 free kind of deals for your business models. It can really work. You should offer to buy any 2 plugins and pay for 1 plugin scheme.

  • If you can get affiliates on board and its an attractive plugin, go with model 1 and offer model 2 as an upsell and cross-sell it regularly via email to the buyers of the first plugin.

  • Before I could suggest one or the other.. have you ever developed a WordPress plugin and are you aware of the actual work involved in maintain and updating ONE plugin let alone 10? The workload would be beyond daunting - BEYOND DAUNTING

  • Model 2 - Membership is the best in my opinion. You build your list much better this way. You can make all members to be your affiliate and get trusted testimonials, because they use your product as well. So, start with it! Good luck!
