I am taking another crack at IM, and this time trying to be more of a student, then just thinking I'm going to be able to quit my job next month; then getting disappointed when something fails.

I first started doing SEO because I like the ""Idea of free traffic. Then, it seemed hard to deal with the competition when there are a lot of things that I didn't know even know where to start. I still don't.

I am trying to take time to learn the things that really bogged me down, and focus on small tasks that make the difference on every thing.

What route did others take that seemed to be a bit newbie friendly for them? What really got them to the next level? Was it through blogs, reviews, PPC?....

I am a really interested to see how many different responses of what others found easy for them.

Thank you
Lionel

    Hey Lionel,
First of all embed this in your mind that there is rarely any money without upfront hard work
Secondly have patience and never quit because you never know when you will hit gold. IM is not at all get rich overnight.

I started in the world of IM with article writing as I did not have money to start IM.

    Good luck with your SEO

You must get laser focused on one project at a time or you will never succeed. for example... when it comes to building a blog you can't expect to set one up, add 20 posts and think your going to get traffic.

You need to plan and build your business. In the blog example, one would focuse all of there efforts on building up that blog to have 100's of posts and comments targeting keywords in the niche the blog is aimed at. ...and if your going after affiliate marketing you will need to build the traffic to your site up to about 400+ a day to start seeing any kind of good ROI. keeping in mind you have a good converting site.

If you want what this industry has to offer you have to stick it out.

When you where learning to walk... Did you give up? nope.
You kept going and one day you could just do it!

Hi Lionel, when I start a project I may take a day putting every thing together in my mind. I then take every thing in my mind and transfer it to paper, because each small step I do is important and I don't want to forget to do any step.

I do each step every day and I write down exactly what I did each day. I check my results to make sure it is working. After 2 or 3 weeks if the results are good I continue, if not I find another project.

This is just the way I do things, I am sure others have a different way of doing things

        Good luck
        Clint

Sorry but I totally disagree with both the needed traffic figures and the amount of posts needed on the blogs

I have 3 post blog sites that will get $200-$300 per month with 70 visitors a day and $400+ with 100 visitors a day

You don't need 400+ visitors a day...you need to sell what is selling and target buyer keywords

We often talk about having a business plan to get started, but what the typical newcomer really needs is an Education Plan.
Brilliant. I think education and the process in which we achieve it is constantly overlooked, but one of the most important factors in success(work being the other).

Read, re-read, then print out and read daily BigMike's post. So simple, yet so effective and true.

Great post BIG MIKE! This seems to be where I get discouraged. This time around I know that I need to learn more in these areas that way I can focus on a plan oppose to focusing on what I don't know how to do. Thanks!

We often talk about having a business plan to get started, but what the typical newcomer really needs is an Education Plan.

From my experience mentoring various people of the years, what I've found is that the single largest barrier to them succeeding is a lack of technical ability in regards to using the tools available to them.

That said, the first thing you need to do is sit down and objectively evaluate your abilities. Make a prioritized list of the things you need to learn and stick to it.

For example, how well can you use your computer? It's file management system, and software like Word, Excel, or Open Office?

Do you understand how to register domains, obtain hosting and point your domains to them? Do you know how to use cPanel and FTP comfortably?

How much to you understand about HTML and PHP/MySQL? I'm not suggesting you need to be an expert programmer, but having a working knowledge is important for outsourcing these things.

As you become proficient in those areas, you should be planning to learn one aspect of IM at a time. For example, take list building - search this forum for everything you can find out about list building, ask questions and then put what you're learning to the test.

At the risk of giving everyone here a heart attack, don't focus on or be driven by making money yet

Instead, experiment, practice and develop your knowledge and ability in that area. Then, ease into monetizing your list when you've got a handle on it. Then move on to the next subject, i.e.; article marketing or whatever.

The thing to remember is nothing is really static in this business - methods are constantly changing and evolving, things like SEO are continually changing, so once your knowledge reaches a certain point, you've still got to be prepared to maintain it.

Because of this, don't start out looking to launch a business first - look at it as getting an education that you'll put to practical use at some point down the road.
To the original poster, RE-READ THIS POST several times until it sinks in. There is a lot of good information here. At this point in your journey, probably the most important part of this post is learning to focus on one skill, not money. Focus on that skill or tool, master it, and then you can easily use it to make money. Focusing solely on the money will be a downfall.

It ALL comes down to content + links.

Focus on that for a couple weeks, master techniques on both.

    Content: Write, outsource
Links: Create handmade links/automate link building/outsource.

    Focus on content and links.

Rankings will come. Money will come (Adsense/affiliates/own product/whatever).

Take care and good luck mate!

    Hi Lionel,

I am not sure where you are as far as start up capital, but I would highly reccommend that you outsource some of the more technical things at first. When I first started out, I would get a great idea and start to set up a website. Even though I had a fair handle on html and stuff, it would still take me forever to get it done and then I wouldn't like what I ended up with anyway.

Here is what I would suggest,
Find an idea or market you want to go after
Have the website set up for you (scriptlance.com, or whatever)
Don't worry about everything being perfect, that will only stop you dead in your tracks
Then focus all of your attention on building traffic to that site.

As you go along you can learn how to tweak your seo, set up links, etc. But until you have something out there you can't build traffic to it.

Continued, Focused action is the key

    Best of luck to you
    William Dean

Persist & persevere Lionel! Imagine how many attempts Uncle Thomas Edison had at the light bulb before he got "breakthrough". Same for you, me and anyone else who wants long lasting success. Been in business 12 years (not IM) and still tell myself that today - no matter what never, never, never, never, never give up. Change tack and learn new strategies from those with experience, put it to practice - if it works - fantastic - if not move on. Its not personal, its just business - you havent given your customer convincing enough evidence for them to buy from you. So learn and move on brother - and never give up!

I aggree very much! To add to that, if you want to speed up the learning process, one could always seek a mentor to work with as long as you have done your research and make a wise investment (time or money) towards what knowledge you seek to gain!
