How Many Domains do Most Internet Marketers Typically Operate?

Hello All - I have the question of how many domains does the typical internet marketer usually operate or market on? I ask this question in the context of currently assisting in the development of a video product that will have licensing requirements. We are currently tossing around the idea of how many domains to whitelist (allow) as part of the base package. As the number of allowed domains increase, so do the licensing costs, so we need a generally reasonable number. Up to 3 whitelisted domains as the standard seems to be a good number for most typical situations, but I figured asking the question here would provide much more insight than just asking a room full of suits and ties (....I have nothing against either). Your answers/thoughts are appreciated.

It's not a question that can be easily answered - there is no 'typical' marketer. Some focus on one domain or two - others have hundreds - I'd say the majority are somewhere in between. Doesn't matter - a marketer may have 50 sites but only choose to use your product on 1-2 of them.

What you want is to provide the 'best' sales option for every 'level' .

I would think the best 'pricing' route would be 3 options:

    $$ for single domain
$$ for up to (3 or 5) domains
    $$$ for unlimited domains

Let's say that it costs your company $1 a month to handle licensing for 1 domain. Is the expense $100 if the customer has 100 domains? If you have control over the expense, it's easier to decide on pricing.

We do have elements of control over the licensing costs. Maybe a better way to pose the question might be how many whitelisted sites should we include in the basic package? The idea isn't to give everyone everything they need in a basic package, but if we could appeal to a majority of the target market with a certain amount included in the base package and then offer add-ons above and beyond that number, would be the ideal method. Thanks for your input!

There are many people who park domains on domain parking sites but that is other monetization method which requires different skill sets

It seems to me like you should find out what your competition does and price yourself accordingly.

We have not found any competition that will be doing exactly what we would be doing. Not that what we are doing is earth-shaking or disruptive, its just a different way of accomplishing it. That said, we don't have any competitors that we have found to compare pricing or plans with.

And one other point is to consider where your ROI will be best achieved.

Some pricing tables have a "Best Option", which isn't the basic or the enterprise level, but is the feature set your profitability is based on (the basic should cover your ROI). The final level (assuming standard usage) is the icing on the cake and should never cause strain on your operation to maintain services and features - simply, it should be a facilitation for the buyer as that is its primary perceived value.

Our ROI would be best served offering 1 whitelisted domain per user, and then charge the same amount for each additional domain therefter But in reality....... we have considered a base package as 1 domain standard, a 3 domain "best deal" package, and then add on packages thereafter. Thank you for your input.

Not sure if I agree with that statement. I guess it depends on the circles you frequent and the types of eCommerce you do.

Several people who have gone through our program only have 1 website that generates income well into six figures. Some people are more than happy to scrape by on $200-$250,000 annual income. I'd say that the majority of the successful people in eCommerce that I know are doing it with 2 or less websites.

I would love to know where you got this number from.

I currently own 4 domains and operate one live website. I've greatly reduced the number of domains I've owned over the last couple of years and have been focused on building brands in the health/fitness space.

To me, the number of sites really depends on the business model. I've found a narrower focus to be significantly more easily scalable assuming you are starting with limited resources.

I think limiting yourself to 1-5 domains is better.

At least Durable Oil has a reason to post, to get his paid for sig file in view, you posting this is both a mystery and a thorn.

On what do you base your thinking of limiting the number of domains, is this what you did, or is this what you plan to do? You troll the WF with some intent, to be discovered later, you want to compile all the answers either into a guide or a possible WSO, who knows, I doubt even you do.

Anyhow, besides being annoying with your so many one line posts, when you do post something you offer no basis for your opinion. Do you have any?

Some of the people I know have upwards of 50 or more domains. Some of them are right here on this forum. Personally, I run 320 domains (with lots of admins) within widely disparate niches. I don't think that is really unusual among the "most successful internet" marketers.

Care to share any potentially helpful information as to why you have so many sites, the benefits, the business model, etc?
