Profitable Lessons From Cops Dealing Doritos at a Pot Festival

Since it's at night, we're flowing right along and I'm kinda getting hungry...

Thought we could talk about a couple profitable lessons dealing with some munchies.

You See...

Something weird that took place in Seattle this past summer as I'm writing this to you.

Check this out...

There's an over 20 year old summer "pro pot festival" on Seattle's waterfront.

Tens of thousands of "stoners" gather to smoke openly, listen to music and gaze at the Olympic Mountains in the distance.

The haze of pot smoke might smell a little more like victory, after the stated of Washington and Colorado became the first to legalize marijuana.

Oh, and the Seattle police didn't plan on making arrests at the festival this year. Guess what they'll be doing?

They're handing out Doritos.

That's Right. The Police Are Handing out Munchies To The Stoners.

I found this quick excerpt from one of the interviews...

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun," said Sgt. Sean Whitcomb.

"It's meant to be ironic. The idea of police passing out Doritos at a festival that celebrates pot, we're sure, is going to generate some buzz."

The bag of Doritos had a sticker on it urging people to check out the online question-and-answer post on their website.

Anyways, here's the nugget from this:

They had a website that they needed a certain type of person to visit. Their site was about the pot laws and obvious market was the smokers.

The police did go a smarter route. They used the irony of the whole situation to generate major attention.

They also went after the right market with some good bait. But...

Think they overlooked the fact of who their target market was.

Do you think most if any of them will remember to check out the site or even kept an empty Doritos bag?

Probably not, but at least it generated a "buzz" and that was their goal.

Anyways...

You may not have a business dealing with smokers, but you do have an obvious market.

What can you can start doing in your market to stand out and generate attention?

Is it a crazy themed marketing promotion? A news worthy event online?

Something you can come up with that will get people talking, but most importantly...

Taking Action On Your Offer.

Look at your industry or niche now.

Is there a way you could turn your product or service into an event or experience vs just a money exchange?

Can you create a wonderful experience for your future and current customers and tie this event back to your business?

It doesn't have to be a paid event, but maybe creating an event that could tie the online and offline community and your business together.

Pot became legal in WA state in 2012, would be akward if that made arrests this year, and probably illegal...

Ya marketing is all about getting to your targeted audience. If it can earn you a few days in custody but get to the audience, it is worth.
