Thinking about getting rid of Adsense/Affiliate links on my site and just Ask for Strictly donations

Has anyone had a site that has been profitable off of just donations from readers? I primarily deal with sports news.

No, I haven't tried the donations. Donations can work if users really like your content. Also, make it visible to them using popups.

Donations would make more sense if a LARGE PERCENTAGE of your daily visitors are RETURN visitors.

OP, It also depends on your niche

If you offer "one time" or "one shot" content, don't expect much from donations

But if you offer daily news or updated resources that people COME BACK for, asking for donations may lead to bigger pay days than display networks like Adsense

I did this with a woocommerce forum I had, and it worked.

The greater question is couldn't you become an amazon affiliate and offer sport related product in the same advertising space?

Yep, it worked for me in different ways. Once, I ran one of the first free WSOs back when thousands of people visited the site weekly. I fixed maybe a 100 different Warrior's server problems when most Warriors ran their own servers, received tons of testimonials, built a large list of paying Warriors' which also generated a reasonable sum of donations.

Eventually I created a Help Desk and hired some really good Warriors. Scaled that into a membership site back when WordPress, adsense and niche sites were just getting popular and scaled the membership feature into some good earning businesses for my clients and myself.
In the minute it took me to write this post.. someone died of Covid 19. RIP.

? is not the trend / upgrade to a paid member / supporter and you can skip the ads ?

Not sure how much you'd make but you could become a verified publisher/content creator with the Brave/BAT platform: (no affiliation)

I've never tried this but it could work depending on your audience and content. You could always split test to see how it works.

Unless you have millions of visits I don't think relying on donations can work.

I'm slowly working on a sports humor site and looking for ways to monetize it.

Have you tried sports related CPAs? That is what I was going to start with.

It depends on niche and topic . more over how engaging the content + loyal readership. 1 of the indicators is , see if you get GENUINE comments where people appreciate and interact with you? if yes then go for it.
