What marketers can learn from the Marvel Cinematic Universe

This might seem absurd, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU, best known for titles like the Iron Man trilogy and of course The Avengers, has some of the best campaigns ran ever. Their trailers have been known to hype fans all over, and a large fandom of geeks soon followed. This is why it is largely successful.

They partnered with outside brands

Perhaps the most well-known partnership between two brands is Audi and Iron Man. This started with fictional billionaire Tony Stark driving multiple iterations of the Audi R8, plus various other shorts featuring the German brand and key MCU characters. And this isn't just mere product placement - it's clever collaboration. Here's an example:

They asked fans not to spoil the movies

There was much hype surrounding the franchise during the release of two Avengers films - Infinity War and Endgame. And because there will always be people who will spoil others for their own pleasure, the movie casts themselves personally appealed to the public not to spoil either movies. Even the directors wrote an open letter to fans, with hashtags #dontspoiltheendgame and #thanosdemandsyoursilence going viral when both films were released.

They know their audience well

There were several movie easter eggs all over which have multiple comic book references hardcore comic geeks know, and I'm not gonna write them down individually as they take up a lot of space. Nevertheless, the universe has been around for more than 11 years now with a solid fanbase and massive fans tuning in at every film launch or events such as the Comic Con.

Mcu now falls under the Diseny umbrella.

So packing so many super heros into a movie like endgame was a fantastic way to be able to put out action figures tee-shirt lunchboxes and all kinds of merchandise .

Not saying marvel wasn't already doing it but Diseny is built around doing this for 60 or 70 years.

So yes all you said about how theovied where hyped and marketed is true.

But most marketers and content creators will. Successfully creat content that leads to many types of merchandise they can sell

    Interesting post:
    Thanks Enzo.

As for "merchandising" it kind of reminds me of Star Wars. I could be wrong, however I don't think George Lucas sold all those toys to make money ... It was because he knew many People would love and appreciate them.

My Brother Erny is a fan of Marvel in fact he has a chess set of them and my Nephew really likes them.

I believe that was where Lucas mad most of the money from the franchise as with the original series the studio had nothing to do with the merchandise .

But star wars is the highest earning franchise. Merchandise wise between the comics the book series the cartoons and the 75 different rerelease of the original movies .

But Diseny did a reset on the extended universe throwing out most of that .so the last year the sales have been declining health. Or it could simply be last Jedi and solo where not all that good . All Rey had to do to be the most powerful Jedi ever was her eyes and take a few deep breaths

Oh yeah the where several star wars videogames realeased for pretty much ever game system .. the mcu has dozens of different mobile games out now

    You couldn't be more wrong.

You really don't have a clue about marketing.

Lol. Humour me. In this context what would you say would be "good marketing".

The Disney, mcu, and Lucas films model where pretty close to each other marketing wise .

Put as much into making a film and promoting the heck out of it and make most of the money from licencing merchandise .

Which is why Diseny probably bought star wars and the mcu. I guess it took about 6 years for Diseny to make back the money it paid for Lucas films .

And all three produce lifelong fans of the franchise .and most of the marketing is for fans .

They also took a long-term approach. The MCU spans over 10 years and 20+ movies. This takes some serious vision and careful planning, something a lot of marketers could do with.
