Are your sites being seen in China?

I'd be grateful if as many Warriors as possible would let me know next time they check their stats if they are getting any visits from China, and which hosting service they are using (non Chinese hosts that is). Hostgator I know has had problems in the past with being blocked, but I wanted to gauge if they, and any others, are currently affected.

Thanks
Kerry

        Hi Kerry

Having worked with China quite a lot and having an IT son who lived there the last couple of years there is no absolutes unfortunately. They block things at random and for no real apparent reason.

I have a hostgator site which has sold into china one week and down the next. I have tried different servers etc however all have experienced the same fate, on and off over time. Gee even my friends site which is hosted in China goes up and down.

You can never just rely on websites if you want to do business. They predominantly use Yahoo more than anything else both for chat and searching.

Digital stuff they will copy as there is no copy right so you will have very limited life span however education etc is of a high priority.

Thanks Quentin. I well know the general situation in China, have researched it at great length over the last few months. I was really looking for a 'snapshot' of the current situation (although I know it could change daily).

I agree that education is a huge opportunity, and re the copyright problems - don't we face them in the west as well? There are not many of us who can afford to take the litigation route when someone steals our product, and it happens a lot! So I believe that for ebooks and tutorials etc, the opportunities are there. For the big-ticket information products though, with high development costs etc, people may think twice.

          Thanks again for your views.

Actually it's Baidu.com not "Badiu". Yes, there're an unbelievable amount of spammers in China concerning online businesses now. So my advice is to be Careful.

Yes. I can see my site with no problem. I live in Hong Kong, and constantly go to Shenzhen, where I have no trouble checking my site out.

Two of mine on Hostgator are visable, two aren't. Go Figure.
I moved a couple over to 1&1 and my contact over there says
she can get them most of the time but not always.

Bev, how come you took your pic off? I liked it.

I guess the excessive blocking didn't end with the Olympics.

I'm curious, how do you know if any of your sites are visible in China or any other country for that matter?

I've been living in China until very recently.

Although the rules are pretty complex and changeable, my two years spent there taught me that generally there are two types of blocks. The first is the manual block, this can effect a whole domain, single pages, and on the IP address level. There is nothing that can be done about these (unless it's the IP ban, in which case move servers, this type of block is pretty rare, and I wouldn't worry about it myself, the rules can change so fast that researching which hosts have IPs blocked isn't worth the effort.)

The 2nd, and much more common variant is a content based bad. Keywrods, phrases, urls to other pages can set this off - but generally if your page isn't dealing with politically sensitive issues you'll avoid the content based blocks.

A far bigger issue when dealing with China is connectivity.

Internet speeds within mainland China to other sites in mainland China (and hong kong) are pretty good. Most home users have 1-2mb ADSL or a similar speed on FTTB.

The real problem is traffic in and out of the country. I belive almost all traffic to 'the west' is routed via Hong Kong, Taiwan then Japan. I forget the exact route. Accessing foreign sites from within the mainland is SLOW. Blocked or otherwise, sometimes this means very slow to the point of unusable.

I could ramble on... but the long and short of it is that if you are going to target the Chinese market you should get hosting in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has fast links to the West and fast links to the mainland.

I only know if I actually talk to or email them THERE and ask them to look.
One of my contacts checks mine when she comes in to work in the morning and before she leaves in the evening. She's in a place called Shandong Province. Also, if I get any action
off Alibaba I know that two of them are working and they are the ones
    that count.

There are several web sites you can visit to see if your sites are visible in China.
Most of them will list Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. I cannot recall the exact names but google it and you'll sort them out.

Although Yaji has already implied it, different parts of China have different blocking algorithms. Even in Shanghai where there is only a choice of a couple of ISPs there have occassions when a site is blocked on one, and not the other.

Braver - the blocking has been less excessive during the Olympic period. If anything I'd expect to see a tightening up around 1st October.

On the subject of HostGator, i've had a site hosted with them for the last 2+ years. I could access it the whole time I was in China (other than the Taiwan earthquake period - when most foreign sites were down because of infrastructure damage.) Horses for courses.
