Seasonal "Micro" Niche Profits -- $22,616.51 Case Study Revealed

Hey Everyone,

I just finished up two months of seasonal niche marketing
and generated some amazing results. This post is an effort
to share some winning strategies with you, I hope you find
this post helpful.

I wanted to post my recent success with season
marketing, namely selling costumes, as an affiliate
prior to Halloween.

Having been a fulltime affiliate and AdSense publisher
now since 2003, I have made a great deal of money
during the late summer and early fall each and every year.

However, this year was one of my best years and I hit
a grand slam which was a direct result of new tactics
and strategies that I implemented.

My goal is to share the methods, tactics and strategies
I used to generate over $22,000 in revenue ($22,616.51).

I will answer any questions you have about my method
and why it works so darn well.

Before I jump in and share all the details, I want to
give you the facts.

First off these earnings were based on two full months,
September 1 through October 31, and the income was
generated from affiliate commissions through
BuyCostumes.com and Adsense.

Affiliate Commissions: $10,381.16
Adsense Earnings: $12,235.35

Total Earnings of: $22,616.51

About the AdSense earnings, I have a network of
quality sites that generate on the average $75 to
$125 in AdSense income which does NOT target
the Halloween market. So, part from my AdSense
income was from sites outside of the Halloween
market, however Halloween had a very big
impact as it does each Halloween season.

That being said, many of these other sites are
based on the same SEO principles I will share
with you.

I also had two webhosting commissions during the
Holiday period which resulted in $200 and, obviously,
these commissions were not based on my seasonal
marketing strategies.

I share these facts to provide you with true transparency.

What you also need to know is that ....

95% of the websites which were built during the late
summer were created and launched by my assistant
who just months ago had no real website building
experience or SEO experience, for that matter.

Why is this important and why am I sharing all this with you?

Simply because it means that if my assistant was
able to take the simple concepts I am going to
share with you here and put them into action
with these results, anyone else can as well.

My job was to grab domains based on targeted
search terms and her job was to launch the
sites according to my blueprint. It was really
that simple.

Thus, if you're able to take away some ideas
and strategies from here and you then take
action and put my methods to use the sky is
the limit.

I am currently launching "micro" niche sites for
the holidays and am also in the process of
launching dozens of new sites that are not
holiday related targeting AdSense income.

The Concept: Part One (highly focused niche marketing)

My concept this year was to target very specific
costume search terms. Last year I went for massive
traffic and targeted "costume ideas."

If you research that term, you will find that it
gets a crazy amount of search volume during
the months of September and October.

However, the term is too broad and converts poorly.

During this October the site converted at: 0.65%
(less than one percent of the people purchased),
however the new sites I launched converted between
1.5% and 10%.

What I did this year was really based on my
Golden Rule of Internet Marketing
, something
I have been developing over the past six to nine
months.

My Golden Rule of Internet Marketing:

Find out what people want or need and give
it to them by making it easy for them to buy.

The first part of my rule:

Find out what people want or need.

This is fairly simple and straight forward. It means
that you need to target search terms which you
know (as well as the searcher) exactly users are looking for.

The second part of my rule:

Making it easy for them to buy.

What does this mean?

If you have a site about power drills, you
should ONLY feature content about power drills --
no fancy web 2.0 buttons, no follow me on twitter,
no FaceBook apps, and no ad banners for products
that are not 100% on target.

If you follow my golden rule you will be left with
simple sites that are easy to navigate and easy
for your visitors to find the stuff they need and/or
want.

So, the results will be sales and conversion.

In fact, as mentioned my network of sites this
year converted between 1.5% and as much as 10%.

Site Conversions for My Top Producing Sites (in percentage):
1.2 %
2.2 %
7.9 %
2.7 %
1.9 %
1.6 %
2.2 %
2.0 %
1.9 %
3.2 %
0.9 %
2.4 %
4.2 %
1.7 %
0.8 %
8.3 %
2.1 %
3.4 %
3.0 %

As you can see, I had many sites converting very, very well.

The Concept: Part Two (launch as many sites as possible)

The second part of this year's concept was be to
leverage on page SEO by using my special formula
(think adding outbound links, search term domain
names, unique content, and more).

In order to truly launch a lot of sites, I would not
have time for stuff I really never do anyway, such
as article marketing, social bookmarking, link
building, etc.

Mind you, I did a bit of link building ... but I truly
do mean just a little bit. As a matter of fact, for
most of the sites we launched we spent less
than ten minutes on link building.

Because of this, I felt that many of the sites I
launch would rank well but not amazingly well.

And so, most of my moneymaking sites this year
ranked between 6 and 20 on Google.

When I saw sites which were ranking in the top
twenty, I usually did nothing more to try improving
the ranking.

The powerful part of this is that ...

It gave me time to launch more sites which
often found their way into the top twenty
of Google with minimal effort.

We (my assistant and I) started at around
August 1st and began with about 20 domains
to target and launch sites on.

My plan was for small sites that had only five
to ten pages. However, I then began seeing
the power of my "niche site" plan and quickly
tweaked my thinking to simple "micro niche"
sites that often contained only one page of
content on the homepage.

This proved to be powerful as most of my content
(site pages) pages were on the domain homepage.

Let me further explain.

Typical Niche Marketing Thinking:

Launch 10 sites, each site with 5 to 10 pages.

The Network of Ten Sites Would Have a total
of 50 to 100 pages of content.

This network of sites would result in ten pages of content
being found on the domain / homepage / root of the
domain.

My One Page "Micro Site" Thinking

Launch 50 sites each with 1 - 3 pages of content.

This "micro" network of sites would benefit from
having 50 pages of content on the domain root.

The power of a domain name is HUGE when it
comes to ranking online and my network of
sites maximizes and leverages this fact.

Launching a bunch of sites all at once was not
so hard as we were not trying to launch huge
massive "authority" sites but simple little one
page sites which focus on just a few search
phrases based on my golden rule.

One of the benefits of being so busy publishing
content is that most of the sites never really
got slapped by Google and none of them got
into trouble.

Again, we did not:

• Submit articles
• Social bookmart our pages
• Do video promotion
• No three way link clubs
• Ect ..

I never really liked publishing content on the web
unless it was to my site. The exception for me is
videos.

The only link building we did do was based on one
or two items; one of which is my KeywordLuv
method and the other is simply posting a mini
article on another blog with one or two back
links to the newly launched site.

Simple and nothing that would backfire with Google.

The affiliate linking stuff.

I only promoted one affiliate program. Again,
the whole concept was to move fast and to
keep things simple. Thus I pulled a "search"
link to BuyCostumes.com which I could use
on all my sites.

I did not need to log into CJ.com each
time I put up a new affiliate link.

I just used my search link for all the sites and
I was able to track sales with each site's own
PID tracking.

Also, I only installed one block of AdSense ads
into the sidebar which keeping AdSense out
of the main content and tried to push people
to the affiliate program instead. Regardless,
the AdSense click through was still strong
due to good blending of the sites.

Lastly, we used WordPress with the following plugins:

-All in One SEO
-Google XML Sitemap
-Shadow Link Cloaking plug-in (cloaks affiliate links for free)

In the end we launched about 120 sites and
did really well. Next year, should be really
interesting for sure.

I am now moving forward with launching a
"little micro network" for Christmas and the
holidays.

I will let you know how that goes.

Best,

      Hey Intrepreneur,

It is important to realize that my assistant
and I really did a ton of work here, however
      the principles are wicked effective.

I just launched about 20 micro niche sites
targeting a pet products and they now are generating
      revenue as well.

Take action, be realistic and stay focused.

Those that can do that make money.

      Hi Brian,

Thanks for an excellent, well conceived and written, post.

      One-OK, two-quick questions.

As you are putting up a fair number of sites are you using top level domains, e.g. ".com", ".net", or are you using less expensive ".us", ".info", etc?

On your WP sites are you sticking to one theme or using various themes dependent on content?

      Thanks,

      Elmer

Elmer I higly advise .com over any other. I have most success and sales from .com's The others just seem to be a yahoo magent which is pretty usless as no-one uses their search.

I grab any domains that can meet this criteria:

          • Based on an actual search term.
          • Search term is based on a product or service
            (That sells well online)
          • .com
          • .net
          • .org
.org ranks quite nicly right now

        Elmer,

First questions on my Micro Niche Marketing post comes from
        Elmer, here are your awnswers.

        1) Out of the 125 sites were launched about 85% were
        based on the following domains.

        .com
        .net
        .org

A small fraction were .us domains and non of those really
ranked well. That being said if I find a very strong keyword
domain that is available in the .us, .biz or .info I will sometimes
        take it.

However, if you want to rank fast, stick with the leading
        three domains.

        Wordpress Themes.

I am using FlexSqueeze, this theme is a paid theme and
allows me to quickly and easily change colors, headers, width
        and much more.

The key is to figure out how to spend less time "fiddling" and more
        time "publishing".

        black hat ..
        blue hat ...
        white hat ...

I like to think "smart hat".

        Hope this helps.

    -do you use .info domain?
-how many traffic do you receive in a day per domain?
Hmm, average earning per blog is $100 per month. That is so many.

    Thanks again

      Hello Goodmast3r,

I prefer to get the following domains:

      • .com
      • .net
      • .org
Traffic was massive, and if you were to do some research
you would see that Halloween is one of the biggest
traffic spurts that happens all year (that is also commercial).

Some of my little sites earned as much as $450 others
earned as little as $50 or so. While this seams like a ton of
sites (and it is) it is important to remember were were able to
get these "completed" within 2 hours or so.

Were now modifying our methods and moving even faster ;-)

I hate to break it to you, Brian, but your Golden Rule has been around since the invention of the marketplace.

Seriously, though, excellent case study, complete with actual data. Well done.

The reminder about not having to create massive authority sites was timely, as I have several projects on the board which should really be out working, but they've been feeding on visions of grandeur and getting fat...

      Hey John,

Agreed, my golden rule is basic marketing 101.

That being said lots of people miss the boat on this
stuff, I know I did for years. I have always been able to

      of traffic is key.

      Hey KX,

Shared hosting works just fine, and I will give you the name
of the company I like the best for shared hosting.

      Hostmonster

      They offer:

      • Unlimited domains
      • Unlimited bandwidth
      • Unlimited disk space
I am a web hosting affiliate myself and got an account with
them to "review" their service and I was impressed. Another
thing I like about hostmonster is that they offer 24 hour
phone support - when you need help they can help you.

And it is really cheap ...

      $5.95 a month

Or, if you like send me a private message and
I will send you a discount link for $3.95 a month.

Now, your question leads me to believe your think
about linking your sites, or doing a fancy "link wheel" ...

Non of this is needed and as mentioned the only promo
I do is one blog post with a couple of links to the new
      site.

That or I used my "KeywordLuv Method" to get a couple
      quality inbound links.

      Hope this helps ...

          Matt,

          Ok, link building stuff.

Links are important and quality of links trumps
quantity of links in Google, thus my strategy has been
to get links from sites that most affiliates are not using.

Social bookmarking, directories .. these are linking methods
          that are on Googles map.

So what I have begun to do is target blogs that are part
of the "no follow" movement. These are blog owners that
are happy to reward "real" comments with links that pass page
          rank.

So I began to search for "do follow" sites and run into
two plugins, this is where it starts getting good.

          • KeywordLuv
          • Comment Luv
These are wordpress plugins that reward commentors
with links that are based on "anchor text".

Instead of getting your name linked from a blog post
comment you get your name @ your keywords.

So if I wanted a link for for my new "vintage wall clock" site
I would search google for the following text:

"Enter YourName@YourKeywords in the Name field to take advantage" + clock

This search would only bring up sites that are running
the KeywordLuv plugin that also have the word "clock" on the
          page somewhere.

The result is links from sites that usually pass pagerank,
          complete with anchor text ...

These links are much more powerful than directories
(Google is leary of directories - unless you use my
authority Directory method) and can help new sites get indexed
          quickly.

The idea is to post about four or five comments at different
sites, you do not want to post five comments on the same
          site.

This is a dead giveway that your simply trolling for
          links.

Of course add value, leave a real comment and add something
          to the post.

          KeywordLuv = great free method.

For the blog linking I do, these are part of a network
that no one is really talking about. They are far more powerful
          than "other networks" ...

I rather not name the program here to protect
the integrity of the blogs ... network.

          PM me for details.

Great post with specifics and a nice timeline. Appreciate that.

Also, I only installed one block of AdSense ads
into the sidebar which keeping AdSense out
of the main content and tried to push people
to the affiliate program instead. Regardless,
the AdSense click through was still strong
due to good blending of the sites.
I'm a bit of a newbie, so forgive me if this is obvious, but can you or anyone tell me if you feel like the presence of the AdSense was detrimental to your affiliate conversions? Is there something you use to measure (e.g. A/B test) to find out the optimum amount of AdSense presence?

    Thanks!

Not a newbie question at all, here is the rub
about both adsense and affiliate links on the same
      page.

It is really hard to say which combination would
      have produced the highest earnings.

      Split Testing ...

That might be something the ppc guys do, however
my traffic is free and instead of testing, tweaking
these types of things I tend to keep it simple
knowing that my method works very well.

I will also say that since I have had an Adsense account
since 2003 I know that people click the costume ads, and
I know the buy the costumes through my link.

      So I did both ...

      Hey Marhelper,

      Highly Focused ...

Does not have to mean brand names, rather just
      "highly focused".

      Example:

Non focused terms (using Halloween as an example):

      Halloween Costumes
      Costume Ideas
      Adult Costume

      Focused Keyword Phrases:

      Childs Fairy Costume
      Boys Vampire Costume
      Girls Princess Costume Snow White

Hope this helps and glad you found my post inspirational

    Brian - unbelievable info!

Can I ask is there any other holidays you target throughout the year?

I would guess right away Christmas but I'm just wondering if you build your business around 4-5 events/holidays each year.

      Michael,

Halloween has been my favorite best producer
      since 2003 ...

I have not really dug into Christmas but will jump
in this year, however my methods work quite well in any
      type niche marketing.

I think in the past after Halloween I would need a break
      from the seasonal thing.

However, now I am thinking that targeting Christmas
would allow me to focus on seasonal trends about 5 months
      out of the year.

Brian, thanks for a great post with real data rather than hype.

I have a question for you.. What search numbers do you need for a nice site? Do you have a minimum "exact" search count per month?

Your recent experience is with seasonal niche. I've see the "halloween costume" spike in google trends, but I'm thinking more of year-round products, or 3-4 month seasons (fashion).

What scale of searches makes it worthwhile, for products that do not have such a huge holiday spike?

    Thanks -

So, you want to sell me another way to easily make "X" dollars in "X" days? ROFL too funny! IM success requires hard work and lots of time. Most newbies do not survive the steep learning curve. Anyone who says otherwise is probably selling you a fantasy.

      Kx,

Depends on far too many factors.

Average cost per click estimates (adwords tool).
If I can get a keyword driven domain.
      Affiliate programs....

I will mention that I have targeted ebay and have
done quite well with that program as you can target
so many "true" niche keyword phrases.

          Maggie,

          True niche keywords:

Keywords with search volume, based on commercial products
or services that people buy often online with little competition.

Once in a while people email me and say they can not find
these types of keywords, the truth is their are so ... many.

Give me 90 minutes of research and I will have found
between 25 and 75 keywords to target ;-)

    Dear Brian,

Thanks for sharing your experience and inspiring many newbies like me to take action.
I really appreciate your generosity by taking time to compile such a lengthy post going into facts and figures.

I would like to ask a couple of questions,

what is exactly meant when you say
"This "micro" network of sites would benefit from
having 50 pages of content on the domain root."

Do you have all 50 sites sitting at one domain, with 50 sub-domains?
    eg.
    mydomain.com - main site
    micro1.mydomain.com
    micro2.mydomain.com etc.?

And what sort of content do you use? Are they micro-niche based articles, reviews or videos?

Again, I wanna thank you for your time. The best advice I got was, "The key is to figure out how to spend less time "fiddling" and more time "publishing"."

      Wealth ...

Each mini site on it's own domain, sub domains can
work but not nearly as well. Some people just getting
      started may say ...

"oh well, guess I can not do that, I can not afford 100 domains"

DO NOT FALL INTO THIS TRAP ...

Heck, if your starting out it will take time for
you to learn site launching, research and the rest.

So you start with five domains targeting five search
terms and your set. Once the five are live you have something
online that can begin generating revenue for you ...

This money is reinvested in more domains ...

This is how I started about three years ago when my
online business was in real trouble. Back then I started
thinking more sites rather than huge authority sites
and I simply reinvested for a matter of months.

You have give some very valuable information on the power of niche sites vs. Athority sites. Thanks so much for sharing it.

I had a question about hosting. I had always read that you don't want to have domains from the same web hosting account pointing to each other.

How do you overcome this or is this even an issue? Do you actually have all of the sites linked together or just pointing to one site.

Who said I am linking my sites together.

          I am not.

          No need.

They rank out of the gate so linking together would be
          something I would not risk.

          Plus, again they are ranking!

People link sites together to push rankings.

          I already got them!

      Wealth,

This is so darn important, and nobody talks about it?

      Prioritizing your efforts is key.

Money is generated with traffic, thus you really ... really
      need to focus on traffic.

      More pages.
      More posts.
      More keywords.
      More videos.
More what ever you publish to get people in front of your

      Hey Steve,

Bottom line is this, each site is on it's own domains.

      Ian,

      That is correct.

Couple of things, I never said "blog".

I really hate that word (blog) because it confuses people.

I use wordpress to launch websites, simple as that.

Sure, Google loves fresh content, they also love all the
      stuff I give them like:

      • Quality Content
      • Unique Content
      • Outbound Links (no affiliate links)
      • Keyword Domains
      • No Sign Of Affiliate Anything (Google does not see my aff links - they are cloaked)
Thus they rank my stuff high, I get traffic and make money.

The key is to be able to walk away and launch more

Also, how does having affiliate links and adsense links work together? What % of people click the adsense ads and what % actually click through to your affiliate links?

twenty of Google nearly 50% of the time with
      minimal effort.

Thus I drive lots ... and lots of Traffic.

And the way I layout my sites most people do not
leave mysite through these types of links.

Let's say I lose 15% of my visitors to these links and
let's also assume I get 1000 visitors daily.

I am still left with 850 FREE visitors ;-)

Most people who do affiliate stuff would kill for my
      rankings and traffic.

I have already commented about affiliate / adsense
      issues.

Brian - thanks for the great post. I've just been getting started doing something very similar. Very little traffic and no sales so far, though mine are geared more the Christmas.

Anyway, a couple of questions if you don't mind.

        1) What outbound links do you have in the sidebar, other than AdSense?

        2) Do you use pages or posts in WP, and why? Or, do you think it matters?

        Thanks,

          Jason,

I link out to stuff that Google ranks high in my niche.
This way, Google stops by ...

See's all my god stuff (the kind of stuff they ask for at
the Googles webmaster guidelines) such as outbound
links, unique content, video and ...

          They trust me.

          Tada. I get ranked.

          Forget pagerank.

Today it is all about "trust rank".

          Jason,

          Pages or Posts.

I like posts because they get feed into the rss feed
automatically, while their are now plenty of plugins
to also add pages into the rss feed I prefer simple.

          Oh ....

          One more issue.

The homepage - make it a static page so you can
control the content and make more sales.

Just threw up my first season Xmas site - low comp, around 6000 competing sites, a MicroNicheFinder SOC of 6, and OK traffic with a mega spike this and next month.
    Two backlinks.

As of this morning, it's ranking at #2 in Google. Exactkeyword.org

No aff links added yet, just two pages plus privacy policy, contact us, etc.

Will probably cloak but not sure if it's necessary. A similar niche site is doing OK with non-cloaked Amazon links, but better safe than sorry.

Launched two more, but not ranked yet.

Thanks Brian - this will be interesting! I'm be adding a couple of twists to your outline to if it adds anything.

      Ding ... Ding ... Ding ...

Great results and I am glad to here it.

      Ted,

I launched my first set of about 20 sites about a week
ago, about 75% are in the top twenty of Google.

      Fun hu ;-)

The second site (not yet indexed) is much more competitive and I decided to give a .biz a try. Then another .org

Then I've got the same keyword .net and .org which i might place on different IPs and try a couple of different things.

Having fun, and hopefully be making money from this too Brian

          Hey Ted,

Having an assistant allows me to continue to test
and keep current, were launching an unbelievable amount
          of sites right now.

That being said, do it yourself for now.

Work your butt off ... launch as many as possible.

          Then hire an assistant

The power of a domain name is HUGE when it
comes to ranking online and my network of
sites maximizes and leverages this fact.

Launching a bunch of sites all at once was not
so hard as we were not trying to launch huge
massive "authority" sites but simple little one
page sites which focus on just a few search
phrases based on my golden rule.

One of the benefits of being so busy publishing
content is that most of the sites never really
got slapped by Google and none of them got
    into trouble.

Awesome post Brian. I do have a question about the micro network of sites. Right now I am pretty much doing the same thing. Are you interlinking the sites together? So site A is linking to the other 49 sites, site B linking to the other 49 sites, etc?

      Steely Dan,

      No interlinking of sites ...

To much more, takes time away from publishing
      and it is risky.

Why risk when I am already ranking so well?

Thanks for the great post Brian.

You've got so many different profit centers, you can continue to keep making money with these sites on autopilot, flip the domain names or flip each site for a nice chunk of change and you've still got plenty more to fall back onto, win-win-win I say.

    Nice work.

      Charann,

Yep ... That is all part of the master plan ;-)

Food for thought, when most affiliate's / marketers / web geeks
launch sites they get all attached to them. They try to improve
on the rankings by building links.

By just walking away and letting them age the rankings
come on their own. Then after several months you can
start some very slow link promotion to boost rankings.

Then you can either keep the sites for the revenue
stream (this is usually what I do) flip them or grow
      them out ...

      Powerful stuff indeed.

Thanks for the great post Brian.

Just to let everyone know, Brian has posted some great info without even mentioning his product Commission Ritual in his sig, which Rocks!!

I just purchased it last week and learned a quite a few things that will make Google trust/like my site more...and the keyword research vids are money

I wish he didn't include the MH Ritual...that was my secret for a quite a while

Anyhow, the types of sites he is recommending you make in this thread absolutely work. This is exactly how I make my money

I just got done making some videos for my customers showing these principals in conjunction with the Amazon Holiday Toy List that just arrived in my inbox yesterday

If you do this combined with the suggestions that Brian makes in this thread, you will make money.

Using that list, I found 5 keywords with at least 8k(one had 27k) searches in quotes with 50k or less competition...in about 20 minutes

          Thanks again Brian

Gotta run...I have some sites to make

          Elmer,

I am not going to complain about the response I
have received with this thread. Anytime anyone

      Marhelper,

The methods work for any term online ...

Search for "internet marketing course" and you find
my 15 month old site ranking #2 on Google.

Search for "domain parking" you find my site beating
Google, and millions of other domain parking companies ;-)
(I think right now I am ranked number 3 on Google).

If you need money or rankings now then you target
keywords that other do not target, they can be seasonal, or
      not.

And I am going to get my share ...

Right now while I can, In the last two months I have

    Hi Brian,

Had a few more questions in mind:

    - Those 1-page websites that you have, how long are they on that 1 page? I'm assuming it's an article around your target keyword between 500 and 1,000 words?

    - Do you use any copy-writing techniques in order to "persuade" people? or do you just have a goal to quickly send people from your site to merchant's site?

    - What do you use for tracking visitors (if anything)?

    Thanks in advance,

Content of about 400 words to 1000.

We start out with about 400 to 500 words, if we have
time and If we see the site is on page two of Google we
then add more content to the homepage with additional
      outbound links.

This often results in a boost in the rankings ;-)

      Sales copy - no.

No need, these are people who have already been sold.

      Someone searches for:

      kids cowboy costume

They land on your page with "kid cowboy costumes" ...
Those type of visitors sell themselves.

      Awstats for tracking.

Again, keep it simple. And too be honest I really did not watch
      the stats.

Rember: My job is to publish.

      Not to over analyze.
