Namecheap Warning About Coming .COM Price Increases

Yep! Received this email from Namecheap and a few other sources as well.

Let's hope it doesn't go through.

You can blame me for the edits - I think the email is a bit self serving for the registrar so deleted 'calls to action'. The price increase is from $7.85 to $13.50 over a period of ten years.



I understand no one wants prices to increase - but isn't this the first increase in 7-8 years? We are talking about increases of about a dollar per year The diea that any price increase must be approved those who use the products (.coms) isn't realistic...but maybe that's me.



I remember when you paid $80-100 to register a domain. To me, if you double the cost of a .com - it's still a great deal when you consider it can be the foundation of an online business.

The max amt proposed is $13.50 after several years of 7% increases - and of course registrars like namecheap will add their own profit on.



I don't see a crisis but a price increase that is probably overdue and a partnership that may be necessary to keep the entire system solvent.. Am I wrong? (I could be - it's been known to happen quite often).

I suspect Namecheap's main concern is that the new proposal allows Verisign (who control almost 80% of the registrar pricing for domain names) to operate as a domain registrar competing directly with Namecheap and all other domain registrars. Although under the contract, Verisign wouldn't be able to sell .com names itself, Namecheap fear Verisign could act as a reseller for .coms via another registrar.

If that happens, domain name prices to consumers might actually go down in the short term, but as domain registrars are driven out of the market, those prices would rise in the longer term.

Personally, I've used Namecheap for many years with no significant problems. Regardless of the projected price increases, I'd probably still use them as my main registrar.

I also received the same message from Namecheap. Hope this will sort out quickly.

The price increase i have noticed first via godaddy, but it is going round most registrars now, prices for .com will eventually inflate in price as you can imagine how much demand for a .com would be to find the right domain name on top of the registrars wanting to make a bit of profit on top.

If you already use GoDaddy domains you shouldn't be afraid. I was paying $20 for COMS there lol

I also received the email but as Kay mentioned, it's not the crisis they are claiming. I personally am looking beyond .coms and not being so dependent on them. One of my main domains now is dot xyz. I paid less than two dollars for it and believe it or not it's very memorable for my clients.

Thanks for the heads up. This is bad news. Let's see if this increases the price at my current hoster.

I had not seen this. I saw the one for .org and .net price increases, but not this one. Thanks and I will take a look.

Seriously, if you can't afford what amounts to about an extra 50 cents per month for a domain, you really need to re-evaluate even having a website.

If you're making good money online a few dollars .COM fee increase is insignificant. Think less about the price increase and more about the revenue that your website will still continue to bring you for years to come.

GoDaddy raises their prices too, past the intro offers. I've been using GoDaddy for years but find them expensive now. I have recently starting moving all my domains over to Dynadot. Also, GoDaddy still charges for private registration where most other registrars have moved to offering this for free. Furthermore, Dynadot offers sell-side support where GoDaddy does not. So I'm loving it over at Dynadot these days.

Dotcom price increase is a good news for global online opportunities or global online competition... I don't know how to say it.
