I'm not arguing that covid-19 is under control or that it is not dangerous especially to some age/health groups. However, I do think the closures have gone on too long and the damage being done is worse than the risk of the virus.

At risk population know who they are and how to protect themselves. Those who are not high risk should have the ability to chart their own course - to run their businesses - to SAVE their businesses. Restaurant owners, for example, were gearing up to re-open in several states or had just begun to re-open. It's more than unlocking the doors - it's stocking the kitchens with food you need to use - hiring employees who then made provisions for child care and transportation. Every closure has a cascade effect that further damages the economic well-being of business owners.

The same may not be true of other countries...but, for example, Artizona is in the news for increased covid-19 cases. 6700 new cases yesterday is shocking - but there were only 41 deaths.

Just thinking with my fingers here - if the death rate has dropped - and REMAINS - lower than the death rate for the annual seasonal flu...do we need to shut everything down again?

It's been argued by media that the death rate is lower only due to a 'lag' in tgime....but that argument is in its second week and the death rate has continue to decline. In the US yesterday, only 14 states reported death rates in 2 figures and the highest was 41....the average deaths per state was less than 7. The death 'rate' was 3/4 of one percent.

I think the more people begin to look for themselves at where the 'numbers' are, the more difficult it will be to shut the country down again. I don't know if the covid strain is weakening or if treatments are improving or if herd immunity is taking place....but the balance of numbers is changing while the 'reporting' isn't.

It's been interesting to watch so far - and I'm sure that part won't change.
Still interesting to watch, no doubt.

Methodist Hospital

"The patients are getting younger... and they're getting sicker...."
Reporter: "You have 14 rooms- how many are filled?"
Doctor: "14"
Reporter: (stunned) "...How long is the waiting list?"
Doctor: "...Long"
...
Doctor: ".. I've lost count of how many people are in their 20's..."

-------

Arizona had "only" 37 deaths yesterday. 88 on the 1st.

In 2017, they had a total of 875 Influenza and Pneumonia deaths.

Do we need to shut everything down again?

People are not taking the coronavirus as seriously as the risk.

Oh... you said "becoming" typical.

This behavior of not taking this seriously enough has been typical from the very start. From more so than others.

It actually has been getting worse. At first, city streets, roads and highways seemed almost deserted. Now they are crowded, people are massing together on the beaches, parks, and other public areas. Flaunting against social distancing is becoming some sort of a "statement" , protest stance, and even a game by some.

Alabama college students are throwing 'COVID parties' where they invite infected people and gamble on who gets sick first. Come to a COVID party!

Here in Canada, it isn't as bad as it is in the U.S.

I guess when people follow instructions to wear a mask and keep a good distance, less people get infected.

Even here, people will stand in line at a bank. 50% of these people will wear a mask and the other 50% won't. It is sad to see that most think this "virus thingy" in only on the news and it doesn't affect them.

Well, boys and girls.....and Riffle....

it's up to 70,000 cases a day....in the US now...a day.. Over half a million deaths so far worldwide.

The US has a tad more than 4% of the world population...and 26% of the cases.

I heard an interesting comment from a research doctor in an interview just now- he was commenting on changes in sports and movie and various 'entertainment venues' that are happening due to this pandemic.

He said 'it won't last forever and we will get back to 'normal' nor matter the predictions are. He said 'look at the 1918 Spanish Flu (the 'Mother of all pandemics') that killed some 50 million people around the world. That was in

1918....just TWO years later the US moved into the 'roaring 20's'.

A frightening, depressing pandemic - followed by hysterical 'fun and entertainment' - followed by a crash. Will hitory repeat?

Thanks Kay,

I guess I will enjoy the ROAR, and prepare for the crash. Although, back to normal is an idea which has many opinions about what was/is normal.

Man dies after attending "COVID party" in Texas

A 30-year-old patient at a hospital in San Antonio Texas told his nurse that he had attended a 'COVID party.' ...
Just before the patient died, he looked at his nurse and said 'I think I made a mistake. I thought this was a hoax, but it's not'.

Oops! I Thought Coronavirus Was a Hoax

the economic disaster we are going through has yet to get going .. while we took a wrecking ball to half the economy the last 4 months.. it to a few month but we got most of the effected on some kind of assistance or life support ,, and banned evictions ..the relief will stop for many people in the next few months and the estimates are 20 plus million face eviction by the end of september ..

forget the rest of the bad numbers .. the hundreds of large corperations who have near zero revenue .. that 500 percent of small businesses are gone fore good ..

the firestorm that will roll through the country the next year will kill far more people than covid .. many may free to death or starve ..

Absolutely. The amount of wealth in private investments is mind-blowing. As with other downturns, millionaires and even billionaires were made.

Whole new industries and technologies are coming out of unprecedented levels of medical research and development. AI in particular is in fast forward.

Also, we see investment capital pouring into commercialization of government technology transfers for example from the NASA space programs.

i agree ..but we have not gotten to the real crash yet . the crash that happen after the relief money dries up in the next few month .. and the eviction bans are lifted in many parts of the country ..

it doesn't matter how much money goes into the hand of the rich .. if the the only way people have to earn money os a job and there are no jobs .. and with 50 million other people without jobs .. the resources for those in need get used up fast ..

by destroying most of the businesses that provide jobs .. once the economic relief from the government dries up..

there are at least 22 million people around the country due to be evicted by the end of september .. and they will not be able to go out and rent somewhere else .. as the eviction will be on their record .. so they will have trouble getting housing for years ..

Eviction bans do not improve economic growth. And you will never become rich by living on handouts.

Relief was never intended to be permanent, although it has become a lifestyle of choice for far too many.

There will always be people who have little incentive to find work. Those who are getting unemployment benefits now are temporarily making more and doing better than they would by working.

Among the motivated, record numbers of home businesses or working from home offices are being opened up. Real opportunities are increasing perhaps at a faster pace than ever before. But whiners will continue to whine.

This time it may be different....but not because the pandemic is worse.

Between 1918 and 1925 society was the same, shopping was the same, relationships were the same.

But recently (maybe the last couple of decades) we have been shifting to an online shopping society. We have online visits, online relationships, and online discussions..like this one.

Between 1918 and 5 years later, movie theaters were the same, events were the same....so there was little choice but to go back to the way it was.

But now, we are getting used to video conferencing, many jobs are now done from home. Groceries are being delivered. (Or gathered at the store and picked up outside).

Entertainment is now mostly online There are now Virtual events.

I think we may just be getting used to the way it is right now. And the incentive to revert to the way it was a year ago is less than it was a century ago, in my opinion.

As an example, I used to give speeches at trade shows...

I think that may all be gone now, replaced by webinars and video seminars.

I listen to comedians saying that their entire industry, of playing in-person venues, may be gone for the next several years...essentially making an entire part of the entertainment business extinct.

When will we see the next movie in a theater? Personally, I know it will be at least a year before I eat in a sit down restaurant. And we have friends that own gyms and restaurants....and they are out of business.

Maybe it will return to the "Normal" of a year ago. But maybe not quite.

Coping Skills...

Coping means to invest one's own conscious effort, to solve personal and interpersonal problems, in order to try to master, minimize or tolerate stress and conflict. The psychological coping mechanisms are commonly termed coping strategies or coping skills.

The Tsunami is here.

And folks are going to Disney World.

Education system needs a overhaul.

Humans need to be adults to learn about Coping skills from Tony Robbins? And even that is a maybe.

Should be Mandatory at young ages.

Found out through facebook that a friend who is 47, healthy and lives right around the corner
died of covid last night. From him feeling "off" till death was 6 days. I haven't talked to him since this began so I don't know if he was a believer or not. His facebook doesn't mention covid one way or another until after he's in the hospital and diagnosed. I'm afraid I'm going to wind up knowing so many people that die from this that I'm going to become numb to the meaning.

Also, the Gov says my kid has to go back to school next month.
HA - fat chance that's happening. Home-schooling or tutor -homeschooling ... here we come!

There is no friggen way any sane parent in FL should want kids in school right now.

Edit: I knew this was coming - but somehow I'm still shocked. Weird.

The Chinese have a very "promising" vaccine too. They will be testing it out on 120 million Brazilians first though, before placing their own citizens at risk.

Well Folks;

In the US, there are almost 4 million confirmed cases. That's more than 1% of the population. The CDC estimates that there are really 10% to 25% of the population already infected, and either not showing symptoms...not showing symptoms yet....or just haven't been tested.

Serious stuff. And yet, we still have people thinking that wearing a mask is some sort of political statement. Canada and several other countries (who have almost no deaths now from the virus) are banning travel from the US. Some other countries are opening up.

This isn't a "second wave". This is a flood, and the water is rising.

Wear the damn masks.

For weeks the majority of people have been wearing masks everywhere I go - now it's mandatory here so everyone is wearing them.

The numbers are still going up - but the death rate is WAY down from where it was a couple months ago. Something has changed but we aren't getting that news - we are getting hysteria and dire predictions from the media. Doesn't help anyone.

Yes, we may continue to have more and cases month after month - if so, we need to deal with it. We can't stop the world and get off indefinitely - we need to find a way to go on with life as safely as possible....that means masks, and if people want to be selfish - it's mandatory masks.

Khemosabi (TheresaC) - a long time member here - is struggling right now. About half of the people coming into our store are wearing a mask. Two weeks ago, it was a third. So it's getting better.

Deaths are down because there are so many younger people getting tested and going to the hospital. They are still sick, but less likely to die.....and the initial surge in rest homes, veterans homes, and meat packing plants is getting under control.

So, the virus is spreading, but partly to a less vulnerable population. At least, that's the idea that makes sense to me. And...there are now some treatments that are saving lives. Still really sick, just not as many dying.

But still..1,000 deaths a day isn't much of a decline from a high of 2,000 deaths a day.

The dire predictions I'm hearing are from the CDC and Dr. Fauci. The selective editing of information is coming from the government and from the media.(On both sides)

But then, reporting on states that have far better results...isn't news, I guess.

I suspect that schools opening up will make this a whole new ballgame.

The numbers show 20% of infected need the hospital for some kind of intervention, regardless of age.

Some of them will die. The real fun comes when everything becomes bottlenecked.

Which is beginning now.

The deaths are coming.

at best it may be 6 months until there is a vaccine . that covers the strains of this virus that are out ..as there are at least two ..

people will wear masks .. but less out of a need for protection from the virus ..but to avoid nagging from total strangers ..

lets just hope it is not a larger scale disaster .. than this right now .. to take the focus off covid china has historic flooding in much of the country .. damns failing or being blown up.. strange weather .. locustes .. earthquakes .. they are likely to go through food shortages .. as well as what is going on with covid around the country ..

What is selective media on both sides..some sinister Truth seekers vs not? You hedging your bets for what reason? There is science and there is B.S.

Schools opening. no mention of testing....replace ballgame with death toll. Yes they are younger but they go home to whom?

Based on the conversations in this thread, I don't think that many people participating have had covid or know someone who has. I think that's about to change over the next two or three weeks.

Some of us haven't been so lucky, my family has been here since the colonies, so we live everywhere
that you see these hotspots on tv...minus Chicago. No family in Chicago.

I dont know how my family has been so lucky so far, but none of us have died. Many disappeared for long enough into the hospitals we thought for sure they were goners'

Maimi Dade is where I built and sold my first business. I have lost count of the amount of friends in the middle of that shit storm.

I am in an area where supposedly there isn't much covid yet. Where people arent wearing masks or social distancing...and yet my literal neighbors have covid and some have died.

Sorry to hear that Claude, hopefully that's as close to you as it gets.

I worry for you because of that store and your belief in those air purifiers.
imho, I believe if they worked as well or even as you think they do, that the entire
planet would be buying, building and using them.

We'll be thinking of your and your family, claude. Many of us have been fortunate - I've only had one extended family member on ventilator and he pulled through. I think something like this covid-19 doesn't hit you fully until it HITS your family or your friends.

I agree about listening to experts...think it's too bad so many 'experts' want their 15 minutes. This week heard a 'medical expert' - a doctor at a respected hospital...say 'the n-95 masks may not work that well'.

I wanted to shout 'if you don't KNOW - if you are 'theorizing' - shut up'. Give us the facts you have - and skip the conjecture.

Masks are mandatory where I live - but what I hear people asking is this: If the masks 'work' - are the numbers going down in area where masks are required? Don't know.

My family doesn't pay for anything with cash now - after seeing a meme (below) that made us go 'huh'. I never realized how many surfaces I touch in an average day or how many 'potential transmission sites' there are. I doubt I'm alone in that.

Dear Plexiglas -

Thank you for protecting me from the cashier who just touched everything I'm taking home....

The numbers don't go down whee masks are required. They go down where masks are worn by everyone. Even 30% of the people not wearing them will keep the contagion going.

In our store, so far today, we have had 3 customers. Two of them didn't wear a mask, and they are required in Ohio (as you know). Oh well..

Somehow our wires got crossed. The air purifiers don't stop the virus. They only kill the virus if the virus goes through the air purifier.

We have had several people come in, thinking that the air purifier will keep them from getting the virus. Nope. For that to happen, they would have to put their faces in front of the air purifier...all the time, and never look away.

When there is a panic, people grasp at straws. The air purifiers will kill germs, bacteria, and mold in the air, and if used consistently, in the whole house. But viruses need to go through the air purifier to be destroyed, and then only because the purifier has an internal UV light.

If someone sneezes near you, and there are no masks, and one of you has the virus, no air purifier is going to save you.

Good !

The only places I feel comfortable enough to spend any amount of inside time are my own house and vehicles. No way are you going to catch me inside anywhere I'm not sure is safe. imo as I've said a few times, I think ventilation is key, so I stay outside.

My kid about gave me a heart attack though, my one set of neighbors ( the 75/87-year-old couple) have been staying to themselves but they still talk to us through the fence.
My kid lost track of me because I went into her back yard, my kid knocked on the front door and the guy let him walk through the house and into the back yard. AAARGGGG!

Luckily for that guy, my kid has been kept away from everyone. Today I see five children in my boy's age bracket have died here in FL in the last two weeks, so I guess, we are just as lucky that they have been isolating too.
