Inter'l Shipping / Customs questions for CDs/ DVDs

Hi,

For those of you shipping international products like CDs / DVDs, are you listing them as "gifts" on the customs forums so your clients get them duty-free? Or how are you handling this?

Thanks!

To avoid issues you need to be exact on the custom forms. You can put "CD Media" or "Marketing Materials" etc. If customs ever questions your stuff for possible tax evasion you could be in serious trouble, even if the dollar values are pretty low.

From memory if the value of the product is under $500 then you are not charged duty anyway. You would have to check the customs government website to verify.

It's nature as a gift alone does not make it duty free, its tariff code does, coupled with the country of import's tariff schedule.

        My answer was unhelpful.

I highly recommend that, because customs law is complex, but has simple and very real penalties backing it, that you follow the lead of your courier/carrier for paperwork requirements, such as the commercial invoice, and do not try to circumvent duty charges by falsly declaring the end-use of your goods.

Unless things have changed recently, this statement is not correct. I used to sell items on ebay of an electronic nature (think home stereo receiver) with an approx. value of $100. The duty on these items could sometimes be almost as much as the item itself.

That is how some folks decided whom to purchase from. I shipped the item from USA to Canada.

You would actually need to ask about each individual item you plan to ship to be accurate.

I get all my CD or DVD sent by Kunaki. They just mark them as "data disc" and value them at "$1.75". That's for international shipping.
