The title says it all. What are the advantages of having a .com over a .net?
Does it effect the SE in any way?
#net

    Hi Anna

I think you will find .com is the first choice for most domains.

For Local businesses in the UK I think that .co.uk is much better as long as the host is physically based in the UK.
    Kenj
    Otherwise I stay with .com

well I am asking I found a .com for my niche but it will be next to impossible to break into the top 20 anytime in the near future. The I found another .com that I have a hope with and a .net with the same amount of competition but with more searches. Don't know which one to go with

I'd register .com...or both? and forward the .net to the .com if your saying your choosing the same name between the 2..

  • Hey Anna, i'd stick with .com as its always the powerful one even with seo (in my experience anyway)..that and its just the universal recognized TLD

I know of marketers especially here in the UK whom have exploited and leeched of traffic of established websites...due to a .com not being registered..

    for example

if you purchased AnnaMarketing.co.uk (which a lot of fellow UK marketers do)...someone else may come along and reigster AnnaMarketing.com...and its just nature of searchers to type in .com vs somthing else like.net, .co.uk etc

Depends really what your looking to do too Anna..eg if your domain will be used for PPC traffic then it doesnt really matter I guess..

Hope this helps but if your still not sure just post a reply here and i'll try my best to elaborate on other points you may raise

although I live in the uk I mostly market to US and Canada so I don't really want a .co.uk. I guess I am just wondering if it is better to go with .com that gets less searches or a .net with another keyword with more more searches with the same amount of competition

    • ahh i see ok I got ya,

well being honest Anna, I wouldn't say its all doom and gloom if you go with .com and it gets less searches...

presumbly they are very similar and aslong as you SEO your site well...I am confident you will prosper either way...I have seen perfect keyworded .com domains being outranked with other seo strategies and domains..so if you really dont worry too much i'd say
