Hi,

I am unemployed English teacher. (lost my job when virus spread).

since I have a lot of time, months, I would like to study a skill that I can offer online as a freelancer, something that is in demand
on the current market, it can be web developer, making video, I am quite confused.

All I know is I am willing to study, put the time and master something that can provide a salary for the future.

What is the internet skill that companies are looking and likely hiring me for?
*To clarify, I am not talking about 7$ an hour data entry skill. I am referring to a skill that has potential and give value to the market

thanks a lot

rob.

And you claim to be an English teacher...is this what you teach your students?

In USD the dollar sign goes in front of the amount...no charge for the English lesson.

I would say sales. Start with sales, because it's something at your level you can start in various industries.

You will find what you like and what niche/industry you do best in.

I am pretty sure that you can make money teaching English online.
Although I have not done this myself, I have heard of others doing
it and making a comfortable living. I would recommend that you
Google phrases such as "online teaching jobs" and you are sure
to find something to get you started.

I have been answering this question a lot.

I personally have been directing people to be freelancers at this time. Still being able to learn a skill that has potential for growth in providing true value.

Don't be steered away by the name "freelancer" sounds childish i know. But when your paying bills and eating i don't think its very childish then. There is a wide range of freelancing skill sets so grab one that sounds interesting and start executing.

Personally I don't think that only one skill will make you money, you need to develop many skills. For example, you learn a photoshop and now you creating stunning Logos, but in order to make money from creating logos you need to sell the service, so it means that only knowing how to create stunning logos won't make you money.

You need to create a website for your logo creation service, you need to have a portfolio, you need to drive traffic, you need to have good customer support.

Do you understand what I mean?

Better decide what business model interests you the most and work with it, you will learn so many new skills and you will move forward with your business.

if you want to learn something which is more internet marketing related, then study the principles of driving traffic to a website, you will need this

    Hi Rob,

Sad to hear you lost your job. In these times it is the only thing I hear from people and it really hits me bad.

luckily for us one thing that will last the longest is the internet. What I keep getting as a question from friends, from people I work with is and they are professors like you are is what to do. How to offer my knowledge to the world and my answer to them was E-learning. You might say oh there are many online courses out there, who would get me. But with proper tool, proper placement, making yourself different than others you can succeed. You can use the power of internet and steer your skill towards it, pack it right and sell it to the world.

My own thought on this is that if I were trying to decide on what skill to develop I would look at freelancer sites and see whats in demand. Finding a balance between pay rate, demand, and ease of developing the skill would be the key. That is not to say those sites are where you should look for a gig...just a good place to see whats in demand right now..could change in a week of course so don't get too obscure ( I have a ton of certs on outdated PBX systems...mostly worthless these days) To replace lost income you should probably do as others have suggested and use your existing skill set...WHILE you develop new skills. Just my 2 cents...good luck oh , If you want a direct answer: Apache Hadoop

Good writers are a;ways in demand. You can sell on many market places, including here. You'll need to build your reputation up at first, and maybe work for less than you would like, but after many reviews and testimonials you can charge top dollar.

Hi Rob, I used to be an English tutor for international kids in my local area.

Since you are well versed in the English language, you can look into becoming a sales copy writer.

If you become really good at copy writing, the world is your oyster.

Businesses will pay top dollar for excellent sales copy b/c it makes them millions.

I would say traffic generation. This is, and will always continue to be the #1 sought after solution when it comes to online marketing. But are you trying to teach people how to do "internet marketing", or are you looking to go into a small niche for yourself and get easy sales? Are you trying to go the consultant route and teach other business owners how to market their website - when you've never done so yourself?

I think you're starting off looking at it the wrong way. You should be asking "how can i fill a void in a small niche market that needs a demand?"

From this, YOU will be the one who will need to learn how to generate traffic. And the #2 skill is the art of copywriting. But that may be over your head for right now.

So far as I know, online education is slowly gaining popularity. Due to the effects of the new crown virus, people are more willing to learn at home.
BTW, if you can not find company focus on online education, maybe you can use youtube to start your own English teaching career.

  • Hi Rob,

So sorry to hear about the loss of your teaching job to this virus outbreak.

I agree with most of them here that you do have a skill (that's teaching English) and use that skill and tweak it a little and leverage on today's technology and continue what you are already doing best. I have been taking my French lesson via Skype and it has been working well thus far unless there is a Wifi connection issue on my teacher's side (she stays in Mauritius).

Unless you are feeling kinda getting jaded with your teaching job, which means this is an opportunity to try something different and new. If so and you are keen to doing something relating to Internet Marketing, you may want to connect with me and I can share further.

All the best in whatever you choose to do.

  • Study NLP and copywriting. That's if you want a work from home job, but if you want an online business, then you can create and English course and sell it for about $10 to $15 per course or a copywriting course which you can sell for slightly more at $15 to $20 and sell on a website called ===>> udemy.com

Once you know how to set up a sales funnel online, then you can build your own website, to sell higher value courses from your own website.

    Rob,

The ONLY person that can answer that question is the MAN in the mirror.

    Let me explain...

When it comes to IM < I love doing SEO, I mean I LOVE IT! From spying on competitors, reverse engineering competitors, keyword research, learning and mastering IMATs, crafting LSI content, crafting IBIs, obfuscating IBIs, crafting stealth PBNs, etc., etc.

    BUT!

    I HATE writing web content!

    I HATE doing graphical artwork!

I can craft great videos using After Effects, Adobe Premier, Filmora 9, Camtasia, But I DON'T LOVE DOING IT!

In terms of IM, my passion is the techy stuff!

That stated, you need to perform a Self-Assessment to help determine where your best fit would be in the online atmosphere.

    Here's your SAT Self-Assessment Test:
    • What technical skills do you have?
    • What about soft skills?
    • What are your interests?
    • What are you naturally good/great at?
    • What things would you do and enjoy, even if you were not getting paid?
    • What type of jobs/careers would you reject even if the pay was GREAT?
    • What type of personality would you describe yourself to be?
    • What are your primary values in life?
    • *What type of person are you? The career type? Job type? CEO type, Entrepreneurial type? Pioneer type? Worker bee type? Self-motivated type? Follower type? Leader type? Risk taker type?
That SAT will help you determine your best IM fit?

One reason many people fail online or take years and years and years to make it - is because they never assessed themselves to determine what they would succeed at.

I know people who tried their hands at providing graphic design work BUT THEY SUCKED! Consequently, they struggled even though they offered their services on forums, freelance websites, paid for ads and paid for SEO. They never hit it big becasue their designs were and are mediocre.

I want to STRESS... find where your skills, gifts, talents and abilities are, hone them, perfect them and STAY IN YOUR LANE!

*Choose more than 1 if you need to.

    Hope that helps!

Hey!, since you probably have good English skills, I would totally get in the Copywriting world! You just need a laptop and google drive (and fingers hopefully).
Copywriting is the art to persuade through words in order to get readers to take certain action being mostly clicking a link to sell, read another article, see a video,.. basically getting them to do an action by selling and idea through the beautiful art of words. And it's EVERYWHERE, any billboard, article, product, blog, FB ad, email,..
That's how I see it through my eyes, make some research about all the different branches.
If is there any specific thing you like writing about, passions, anything you wrote about years ago that you loved, let me know I can recommend you a copywriting branch that fits you.
By the way copywriting is also one of the highest-paid skills out there, obviously depends on your skills and experience.

If you said that you were an English teacher, why not start by offering online language tutorials while your out of work. I believe there are sites that hire tutors online. You can then turn your English teaching skills into a business by building and marketing your own website where you can offer your language tutorial service and monetize through affiliate marketing, ads, and maybe, eventually sell your own "Learning English" course.

The most in-demand skill is... of course... the one that makes the most money.

In order to make money though, you need to get people to want to give it to you.

And to get people to want to give you money, you need a couple of things:

    - You need to have something that they want so bad, that they'd rather have that thing than the money in their wallet.

The ability to create that sort of thing, aka creating killer offers, that people are desperate and hungry for, and that they crave more than cold hard cash...

... that's what you start with.

A lot of people will say writing copy to persuade people to give you money...

... well... if you can only focus on one thing... a killer offer trumps copy any day.

No one says you can't have both. But if you can only have one thing, then learn the skill of creating Killer Offers and Products.

There's actually a skill that's even above creating Killer Offers...

And that's crafting a good story.

If you know how to craft a good story, you likely can sell almost anything. Even if you have a lousy product.

Just look at how many people are paying exorbitant prices for a bowl of noodles just because they saw those same noodles in a movie...

So either of these skills would be good. Whatever suits you...

Since you have months to study.

The skill you can bank on for the next several decades is...

Getting the ATTENTION of people who are within a target group.

Companies have, and always will, hire those people, and pay them well, who can get the ATTENTION of potential customers, clients or consumers.

Some of those are found in PR, some in ADVERTISING, some in Sales Psychology, some in data mining, some in latest tech.

But if you study what and how to GET and to HOLD people's attention, you can create your own paycheck, especially as a freelancer. Months may not be enough time, but if get started today, and learn how...you may be able to create something you can't yet even imagine.

Start with a Google/Bing search on how to get attention, and go down that rabbit hole for a few days/weeks.

    GordonJ

I'm so sorry to hear about your job.
I suggest coding. Study coding, with this you can do many things.
    Build websites, build apps, etc.
Another is content writing but the pay is low. Although if you love it, then it's not really work, right?
Freelance as a web designer, content writer.
If you want to check out incomes and things people are looking for, look to google for freelancing, coding, web design. Do some searches for what people are looking for. Check on Facebook and see what people are asking for as well. (what are the advertisements)

Copy writing is where it's at.

Big difference though between academic writing and copy writing.

See how I'm writing short sentences and writing like I talk?

Not 700 word essays in Chicago format.

This skill is in demand, especially for newbies. You can start on Fiverr and add extra services for premium prices.

You can write sales pages, email follow up series etc.

There's a huge demand for this and it pays well.

And it's a skill you can also use if you want to sell things yourself.

In no particular order, these are the top skills that will earn you a decent living on the Internet at the moment.

      1. Software - If you can code then that's an awesome skill to own. If you can code and you are good at marketing then the combination could be worth a lot of money. Of course if you only have one or other of those skills you need to team up with the right people.

      2. Writing - Always going to find work if you have good writing skills. If you create your own content for your own sites, learn the marketing skills to make it profitable.

      3. Video Creation If you have the skills to create good videos both technical and in front of the camera then that is a really valuable skill to have and has amazing earning potential.

Being an English teacher, a result of years of training and practice, I would first focus on my immediate skillset, see if I can turn my current skills into money, and then seek gaining alternative skills if I am not satisfied.

Some language related services that come to my mind that websites, companies and individuals are seeking and will always continue to seek are:

    - writing (articles, blog posts, site copy)
    - proofreading
    - editing
    - translation (if you know other languages)
    - transcription
    - text to speech (audiobooks, videos)

There are many companies who sell those services; you could check them and work as a contractor or you could list your services yourself on freelance sites or your social media or your own site.

This way, you will be improving your skills even further and when you go back to teaching English -hopefully soon-, you will not have worked on totally irrelevant things, or wasted time in learning skills you will most probably never use once the pandemic is over.

    Best of luck.

If you want to study a skill that you can offer online as a freelancer, you could study programming languages like Ruby or Python. Software development is always in demand.

You could also do front end web development and offer your services on freelance sites. Learn CSS, HTML, and Javascript.
