Gary Halbert's Last Little Dirty Trick...
A few miles away, a group of crows rapidly ascended into the air, shocked at the waves of sound that came bellowing from me.
I had looked to him for advice.
But yet again, he tricked me... one final time...
.
.
.
I was just re-reading an old, old letter Gary Halbert wrote during the recession of 2001.
In the letter, he talked about stuff you should think about during recessions.
You know... while everyone's running around (or in this case, surfing around online) with their heads cut off like scared-to-death chickens... you need to maintain your calm.
Read.
Think.
Ponder.
And here he was talking about what you should be thinking about.
But while the letter itself was incredible (as always)...
... the contents of the letter weren't what smacked me the hardest.
No.
It was actually...
WHAT HE WROTE IN THE P.S.!
See, it was a trick letter.
And the trick was that...
... that letter he wrote for the recession of 2001...
... was actually...
... copied and pasted word-for-word...
... from the letter he wrote for the recession of 1991!
But here's the kicker:
The same principles still applied.
Times change but people are still the same. Regardless of whether it's a recession or pandemic.
Changing human nature and controlling the cognitive biases of the brain is still something that we can only dream of.
The media and politicians are still lying. As always. Pushing the levers to either extreme (we're all going to die if we don't do something or it's nothing to worry about so just ignore this). Whichever best fits their agenda and fills their wallets.
People still don't know when to quit. Doing the same things over and over again. Even though it doesn't work. They are either too lazy (or too freaked out) to even think of doing things differently.
And people are still making decisions will-nilly...
... just going with the flow...
... doing what everyone else is doing...
... thinking what everyone else is thinking...
... without even an ounce of their own research!
But in the end, the amount of effort, time and money you put into your own research is what's going to make or break your success.
Be it in wealth, health, love, or happiness.
You can't run things based on your own assumptions... what you "think will happen"... how you "think the world" should be... running blind based on "what the experts say"...
And when the economy's down, and the fear's up, that's when emotions get high-strung and all common sense goes out the window.
When people don't know what to think or do, the automatic tendency is to default to what the majority is saying.
Even though the majority of students in a classroom are always going to be B-level and C-level students.
And so it is for life in general.
Woe to the man or woman who blindly follows after consensus...
... who makes decision or direction without personal research or experimentation...
... who outsources their thinking to the mass media and the highly incentivized ex-spurts of the world.
I remember Caleb O'Dowd, one of Gary's top students, reminiscing once about how Gary used to whip him up to shape.
Gary forced him to spend most of his time researching the market.
Talking to buyers.
Calling them on the phone.
Poking them and prodding them to find out what makes them tick.
Hearing them talk about their sex life and how much they miss the days when they used to chase their wife around the table and how they still want to go at it at the age of 90 just like they did when they were 25.
And that simple act of research, research, research was what propelled him to the top of the copywriting ranks while he was a total beginner.
Even the A-listers couldn't dream of making a dent on his sales count.
That's how good his first copy was.
And it was all because of research.
Another one of my mentors, who's one of the top conversion specialists in the world, talks about how he spends 80% of his time just researching and reading about what the market (and customers) are saying and thinking.
Reading. Researching. Scrolling through hundreds and thousands of Facebook and YouTube comments. Copying and pasting into Evernote.
CTRL+C. CTRL+V.
Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.
That's how you get ahead...
Whether it's in life or in business...
Whether it's in health or in wealth...
You gotta do the research.
You gotta do the experiments.
Because the moment you start believing in the consensus, is the moment you set yourself up to be thrown under the bus.
When Leonardo da Vinci was alive, he read a lot and listened a lot.
He would routinely invite all the smartest people over to his place for a party, and discuss theories and ideas and all sorts of intellectual stuff.
But when it came down to it, no matter how much of an expert someone was when they came to his house... or when they wrote a book... he would always do his own experiments... and confirm whether what they were saying was really true... or not.
And you know what?
He found that 50% of the time, those books and experts were just talking up a whole bunch of baloney!
In fact, a lot of his breakthroughs came about because most of the expurts were still believing in, what they believed was, scientifically proven fact.
But he knew otherwise.
On the contrary, a lot of potential breakthroughs he could have made, but didn't, were because of well-established theories he had read and believed to be fact... but actually weren't!
Do your own research my friend.
Stop listening to the news or the experts or both.
They say email marketing's dead?
Build a list and email them. And see the results for yourself.
They say the virus is going to kill everyone in existence if you don't isolate and find the vaccine soon because we've never seen another virus like this in the history of mankind?
Put down that newspaper (or TV remote) and pickup a textbook on Immunology 101 and read for yourself.
Immunology 101 says that your immune system can handle anything if it's strong enough?
Make your immune system stronger and test it out for yourself. Let's see if it's true.
Do own your research. Do own your experiments.
You got this, my friend...
