New to Creating a Blog

I am trying to get into the online world to make writing something more full-time for me. Needless to say I am struggling very much. I have decided to create a blog but have no idea the ins and outs or whats that go along with it. I created a blog on WordPress and bought a domain, but when it comes to what to put on the blog I am clueless. I have an about section, a contact section, and a home section, and a blog section. I am completely lost as to what to put on the blog and home page. Can anyone give me some pointers as to how to break out of this vicious dead end cycle so I can start getting my services out there?!

If you don't know what to put on the blog - why do you need a blog? You can do freelance work just fine without a blog - once you have a blog 'going' you need to keep it up to date, find ways to promote it and get traffic to it.

If you need writing gigs - instead of spending time now trying to get a blog ranked - why not place dozens of bids on freelance sites daily - include a word doc with examples of your writing styles - make your bids personable and unique to each advertised job ...and make 'bidding' your JOB for the next two weeks. If you do that, you will get work.

You know there are a million blogs about blogging and if 100 people started from scratch doing the exact same thing they could all be just as successful as the top bloggers..because this thread is proof!

Kay is spot on....you start way before you pick out a domain name.

You should already know who you will be talking to and about what and why would they listen.

Then there are many paths to success with a blog. Some love to write some love to have others write for them.

Just do a search for Top 20 Fitness Blogs. Top Highest Paid Bloggers. "Just Sold" Blogs.

Then there is S.E.O. You do not have to live and die by Google's algorithm but many do. Some people get their traffic from social media. Some Pay...some have people looking for THEM and find their blog or their content rather.

But last thing I want to do is cause more ?s than !s

Start with something that will pay you commissions from your hard work of helping others.

Not in your face welcome to my blog now pay me ha but blended into your helpful and infotaining content you make recommendations that will enhance your readers journey. That is step one if you were to ask me.

Why do people blog about blogging? Because many want to and it can be a bit confusing that part you know already. But also it can be financially rewarding because there are tools and services that you are going to use either way so why not they teach you and you buy those tools and services from them like hosting, autoresponders, paid themes etc.

But the same is true for any niche. There are tools and services you can review for others and leave a link as an affiliate.

Or you can sell your own products.

But when you begin think about others..what do they want need and find appealing then narrow it down to your passion afterwards from that list.

Lots of Blogging groups. Lots. First find a blog you personally love then I am sure they may have their own FB group.

Later we can discuss how people are reverse engineering your successful blog for their personal gain...just kidding?

Now I just happen to see your sig and clicked it that helps tremendously.

You are sitting on a gold mine iif you set things up just right. You have to razzle dazzle them!

Copy-writing makes the world go round!

Multi-million dollar marketers like Anik Singal attribute their focus of copy-writing to their entire success.

Sales pages, email marketing, headlines. Great copy causes great results.

All your articles should be about how great copy has transformed businesses and the lives of individuals there are an indefinite number of case studies for you to highlight and new ones including your own testimonials popping up every day.

Almost every online business owner should take note of your Small ad about how they could increase their bottom line with improved copy.

And great copy writers get great paydays.

Hello, Don't think too much like you many of the bloggers initially suffer from this problem. Just start writing when you saw traffic engagement on you blog it should be amazing for you. Write a blog on personal hygiene could be beneficial for you, I'm not talking about health niche, personal hygiene and you can go for different niche blog and try to write blogs on different niche so you can get amazing ideas to bring traffic on your blog, because traffic is must.

You made a really good start, bought a domain name, hosting, and set up a website/blog.
But now you need to keep going and make your website higher quality by putting engaging content.

You need to decide what niche you are interested in, maybe the health niche? Or maybe gardening niche?
After you decide what niche you are in, start writing content and publish on your blog.

Can I ask you what is your domain name?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11595997].message }}
  • Are you referring to whether you should use posts or pages for the different sections?

Rule of thumb is to put your blog posts in posts and everything else in pages.

As to what to put in your pages, it really depends on what you want to get out of your website. My suggestion would be to create a sitemap first. You don't need to have a lot of pages. Just create pages that serve a purpose and link them in a way that would make sense for your readers. Once you have that, you'll have an idea on what kind of content you'd want to put in there.

Why did you create a blog? What do you want to achieve?

I understand that there is a lot of information about what bloggers earn well. That here sit yourself print or chat and place and get money. But it's not that simple.

What are you an expert at or what experience can you share that would help a lot of people? That is what I would write about. Another thing you can write about is your journey, what experiences you had, what frustrated you, what excited you, etc.

You'll want to grab a Wordpress Pluging called Yoast SEO. That will really help you with your writing style.

When I started, my posts were short. I struggled to put 500 words down. Now, I am around 2000 words per post. It takes time, you will catch on but, it's like anything, you have to keep doing it repeatedly. Blog once a week. If you find yourself thinking a lot about something, an argument, a discussion, some show you watched, then you have material to write from.

Find a.subject that you like and are knowledgeable of before you start writing ..Once you you figure that out you can go about drafting .And if you need inspiration to break writers block check out places like youtube ,instagram, quora, buzzsumo, and groups like this to find content ideas.Lastly ,keep it simple .The main thing is to set a writing schedule and start posting .Don't worry about anything else besides posting and drafting .Keep it simple and learn as you go.As of right now you haven't posted anything so therefore you can't measure your progress.Atleast if you start posting you have results to measure

I have just had a look at your profile and blog and you obviously have talents already. Why not use and build on them as suggested by Kay King in her reply.

I'm following an Internet Marketing course at the moment and that places great emphasis on having a blog. In fact it is suggested that it is the single most important site you can have. Because once you start to get some traction the first thing that people will do is search for your name. And that is where a blog comes into play.

However like you I find it hard to pick topics to write about and stay in the niche. Again advice given on the course suggests that you start to write about everyday things and put something of yourself into the content. Over time you will develop your own style and focus in on your niche.

The one comment I would make about content writing is that it is income for a task. So once the job is done the income stops for that job. You may well acquire repeat customers and build a substantial customer base that keeps you busy. However I'm not really the person cover that.

In contrast once you have an established blog with a steady run of visitors the blog can generate an on going income itself. But that takes time too.

    Good luck with your efforts.

It is a big mistake you have made that you had no idea what you can provide before you created a website.

  • Hi, I have just created a blog myself using Blogspot but I have an idea in mind what kind of topics or area that I would like to write about.

However, I have no idea what you would like to blog about. It depends on what you would like your blog to focus on, which I have no idea for yours as it is not mentioned. I do not know what kind of services you would be providing thus will be difficult to share on the type of content that you may include in your blog.

With regard to the type pages that you can include in your blog, you can consider :-

    - Home
    - About Us (Me)
    - Products/Services
    - Articles
    - Resources (Recommendations of other alternatives / products)
    - Connect with Us (or Me) (readers may connect with you through your Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, Email, etc)

    Hope the above helps.

I wouldn't be creating a blog. If you are a copy writer, learn how to market your services just like Kay said above. Nowadays trying to rank and get traffic from Google is just way too competitive because the competition is so high.

I think your about-page sells your service better than the actual homepage. Maybe set that as the homepage :-) I would not mention that sentence about writing for pennies, though, I don't think the potential customer needs to know that :-)

Good on you for taking action, I get the impression by your site that your why is because you want to spend more time with your family. And your probably passionate about writing but if you could make money working from home online

And found the right system to help you do so, writing would remain your hobby and it would be nice to have the right system help you make more money work less hours and pay the bills.

I think you should zoom in on your nieche, fine tune your craft and have a look at sales physcology because the click industry is a trillion dollar industry and if you fine tune your copywriting craft their are businesses out their that will happily pay you to write their advertising campaigns

those businesses will come back to you especially if your wording helps their potential customer take action. best of luck to you, your husband and baby girl

Just relax. Like experts says, "if you know your enemy, it's like you've won half the battle". It's simple: if you're planning to create a website about travel or health, google for health or travel blogs.
    1. Select the first 10 results and visit each site and go through sections, headlines, website structure, content (you don't have to read the whole blog), footer, logo etc..
    2. When you get to the 10th website, you will get 90% idea of your new blog.

    @ Content Creation Gal!

It does not matter what you blog about, you can blog about anything.
But if I were you I would choose a topic that five million other people
aren't already blogging about. Please go to Amazon and get a couple
of Kindles about starting a blog, content creation, marketing, passive
income, etc. and get busy with your blog. BTW many of the Kindles
are totally free or 99¢. You could also watch some YouTubes about
blogging and all the other topics I mentioned. Don't over-complicate
this, it is not that difficult.

I will advise you for first define your blog theme...why did you create the blog, what do you intend to blog about.

Once you are able to come up with your theme, coming up with articles will not be a problem. It requires that you research into trending issues in your choosen niche.

    I hope it helps.

What is your blog about? You must at least have some idea of the things that you want to write about right?

That said, if you want to make money online, I'd say blogging is not a sustainable way to do it.

  • Creating a blog is usually motivated by a certain topic that you're passionate about. It feels weird that you want to create a blog but don't know what it should be about. Isn't there something you like? Art? Writing? We don't know you, so we can't tell you what you should blog about.

If you just want some inspiration I'd suggest to google about stuff you're interested in. If you have questions about something but can't find the answers to that, maybe you can be the answer? Be the blog everyone's waiting for.

In case of SEO and how to manage your blog I dug up this guide that might be helpful:

It provides some useful tips for setting up your blog and helps you understand the SEO language that you might not be familiar with yet.

Good luck with your blog, I hope you find something worth blogging about

No problem at all, everyone started somewhere in the online world and a road isn't built in a day. It has to be done gradually until completion. So, blogging starts from a post, which is your About post, then others follow. If you're wondering what to put on your newly-created blog, simply start visiting other niche-related blogs and make sure to read posts from those blogs every day. You'll gain a lot of blogging experience and what to write about.
Also, try exploring Quora to find related topics that you can write about from the questions people have been asking.

I suggest you hire an expert, there are good writers out here so dont trouble yourself for no good reason

The home page should focus on what you do. A summary of the things you do including what you sell will suffice. On the other hand, the blog section could do with content on chosen topics within your niche.

Here's the EASIEST and BEST advice I can give a newbie blogger looking to get ORGANIC (ie., Google traffic)

Step 1: Look for QUESTIONS your target audience members would ask about your niche

Step 2: Do a search for these on Google

Step 3: If the results are forum posts / sub-reddit posts / Quora posts / Youtube videos - Write a LONG BLOG POST (1000 to 1500 words) are plenty

Step 4: Write a lot of these 'question and answer' posts - maybe 150 to get ORGANIC TRAFFIC going

Step 5: Write longer CONVERSION posts (these have your affiliate links and are around 2000 to 4000 words long) LATER when you have started to RANK - link to these from RELEVANT question and answer posts

      This is fantastic advice...

The only thing I'd add is: pick a niche that you personally LOVE. It's a lot easier to write about something you love than to write about some (theoretically profitable) topic that you don't actually care about.

  • Hi ! Before creating your blog, it is important to have the architectural structure of your blog in place. From the design to the content and how to 'compartmentalize' the content into your blog. Some suggestions may include :-

    - About Me
    - Articles that are in sync with your product / service offering
    - Other resources relating to the topic/industry that you are representing
    - Testimonials

Do some researches on your own and view other people's blog to gather more ideas.

Hope my suggestions help and propel you further with more ideas :-)

Hey you can write as a freelancer if you find blogging to be hard. There are quite good jobs available on upwork and fiverr that would help you out. If you still want to continue on WordPress then first select a niche for it like what would the blogs be about. For example, if there are certain DIYs then make a DIY category and keep on adding categories depending on the type of content.

I'd say put your blogging dreams on the back burner for now and focus on your writing services.

They will produce an income the quickest and are a more simple straightforward business model than blogging.

You can try to create for sale threads on all the other popular IM boards as well, I see you already have an offer on this one.

The more ads you put up online the more sales you'll make.

One tip that may help you with your sales threads would be to offer free review copies to the first 5-10 customers to get a bank of positive reviews.

Positive reviews lower buying resistance on forums, and will increase your overall income.

Sure its a lot of free work upfront, but once you get the snowball rolling down hill its impossible to stop.
