Google My Business Local Pack

Hello. New to the forum and 'learning' SEO. I had posted this question on another forum and did not get an answer... in fact, I got the feeling that it was avoided for some reason. Anyway, I thought I would try the same question here and see if I could get an honest objective answer.

I have noticed that for certain search terms, Google places the same company in the local pack, meaning 2 of the 3 local listing is the same company, albeit different locations (same city), but the same company nonetheless. From my understanding, Google places high importance on user experience and satisfaction, but this would seem to go against that.

One such search term would be 'home builders near me' in Downers Grove, IL.

Just curious about what may cause this.

Thank You,
Chris

Maybe the business bought google local listing. I have seen a lot of services that provide a google map listing for a certain niche.

These business receiving a lot of traffic from google maps listings and it cost quite a lot to be listed in maps for certain niche and keywords, these people who make your listing goes live and accepted on maps know how to do it and charging about $100-$200 for a single keyword.

Maybe this is the case? what do you think?

Thank you for the responses. Yes, the greedy/competitive side of me might want my client to be listed 2x in the local pack, but in reality I am just looking to free up one spot to give us a chance to get into the top 3 and listed in the local pack.

I would agree that they may be paying somewhere since their GMB accounts don't seem to be very active. Are they paying Google? I only ask because again, Google states that they want the best user experience, but having the same company listed twice does not improve user experience cause they have cut down the choices being displayed. But I guess Google would have to see some of that money to allow this to happen.

Lastly, and I am satisfied with the answers you both have given me... what additional information do you need? In my original post, I listed a Google search that produces the same company twice in the local pack. If you need more information, I can try and get it to you.

Thanks again for the information, I really appreciate it.

Having the same company twice does improve user experience.

Imagine that instead of searching for dentist near me, you search for Starbucks near me. I love it that Google gives me more than one option, so I can choose the one that's closest to me or, when that makes sense, the one that's closes to my route.

Same kind of thing happens with plumbers near me and dentist near me.

When I'm looking for dentist near me, I am not looking only for different dentists but for dental offices that are convenient.

From what I understand, as long as the address is different, there can be multiple listings.

Here is a little article that may answer your question:
