What is the best marketing strategy of new Wordpress plugin?

Hello Warriors,
Recently one of my clients asked me about wordpress plugin marketing. He has developed a new plugin, in the wordpress directory the free version plugin has 1000+ active installation and now he would like to start the pro version.

He asked me about the marketing of his new plugin. He would not like to sell it through theme or plugin market like themeforest or codecanyon. He starts his new website and sell it through his own site.

I know little about plugin marketing. I would like to know more about this. Please give me your valuable advice about plugin marketing.

Thanks a lot

I would think that marketing to the 1000+ users that have it now would be a good start. I do not know how it is done but when your client does an update to the plugin there should be a link to "Upgrade to Pro" that shows up in users WP dashboard. I have seen this happen on my own sites, but like I said I do not know how it is done, I would imagine you could go on WP forums and support sites

      Thanks agmccall.
I know 1000+ free dowonload is a good start and I have also my plan, I will send notification to my existing users to get pro version. I hope so, I will get some response from them.
But I would like to know, is there any crazy marketing strategy to boost my plugin download?

It really depends on the type of plugin. If it's a plugin that appeals to any WordPress user, I'd start by doing Facebook ads and targeting the "wordpress" interest. If it appeals to only a small group of people, play with the interests or try Google ads.

I am confident in my plugin. Its design and functionality is really great. Some of the features of the plugin is just awesome.
I have planned to run facebook ad as well as boost my blog post in the facebook and pinterest and twitter.

But my question- is there any crazy marketing strategy that is booming my sales?
Also how much money I have to spend for my primary marketing plan(a rough idea) ?

Do a search in facebook groups for wordpress useres or a plugins group. They are a pretty targeted group.

Common sense would tell you to market the plugin where
plugins are sold. Why are some people always wanting to
go against the grain and trying to re-invent the wheel.
