Why you should make useless things

Make useless things? Sell them? Really?

To start things, yeah well there will always be that useless product you just bought off the shelf of that department store. Or you might even have bought a WSO here, only to realise it might not be suited for you and you assume it's useless.

So why make useless things if people won't even use them? Watch this TED Talk by Simone Giertz as she shares her craft of making useless robots.

Not really feeling that one at all my friend.

Bills are coming and no time to be making useless junk. I need to make something useful for me or others or both. Like yesterday.

But I can relate in the fact that sometimes I go online and make factual comments on various platforms that I know will never sink into the craniums of certain people but I do it anyway. I feel better after that knowing I released obvious truths and facts that people try to dismiss out into the world.

For me that is important. Not in any way trying to belittle what she does and thinks or upvote what I believe and think.

Different strokes for different folks as long as we are not insulting another directly and indirectly.

I beg to differ. Invention is brought about by a need. It is a solution to a need. So there is no way you can make something that is useless. Someone else will find it helpful.

Imo part of her appeal just resides in the fun of watching someone materialize their own funky/creative idea ... it's just not something you see every day, and almost looks like a magic trick. But I do think her shtick in general does connect to the idea of trial and error engendering useless product > less useless product > useful product. There's a great book by Matt Ridley just out called "How Innovation Works" which provides tons of really interesting case studies in that vein..

At least Gallagher with his Sledge-O-Matic made cash and entertained with his crazy funny inventions on stage.

Maybe it's the headline...Why She Makes Useless Things. Better.

She made video of her making that vest and its less than zero impact.

Could have made a glitter cover for hand sanitizer bottle and sold it on Etsy.

I think invention is all about people's needs. Things are created when there is a need for it in the market! For you, one thing might be useless but there are 7 billion people out there and there are high chances that someone may need that thing for some purpose. Nothing can be useless; it would be helpful for someone else!

      Needful AND Useless?
She made blue helmet with crazy mechanical toothbrush that probably could take her eye out.
She made a vest with supposedly fake eyeballs you cant really even see.
      Sure you watched?

At least it gives pause to think and consider. When I first saw this thread I thought - "pet rock" sold like gangbusters years ago. But even more useless was the person some years back who sold an origami product that was just a crumpled piece of paper. Sorry to say but useless still sometimes sells.
