Hey guys,

anyone uses Pligg for their CMS? What is your experience with it? Easy to use one or not? Do your visitors complain about missing features etc?

Cheers
#pligg
  • Hi Ive never used Pligg. If you are going to use a CMS, I would recommend Joomla or Wordpress. They are both well supported and documented and they have great plugins that are free to download.

Is there a specific reason you want to use Pligg?

I tested and played with it ... Not very impressed at all. I even purchased a template directly from pligg itself. Guess what the template did not work and the owner refused to update it and correct it..

So I told him to keep the money because he must need it, I deleted it from my server.

Oh that's just very inspiring mate...

That's a big minus for them if Pligg doesn't have nice customer service.. When was it? Long time ago? Maybe you have something else to suggest as a similar platform? Getting it coded from zero better option?

It was not that long ago .. About a month or so.. Customer service sucks big time, even as a paid customer. I found the script to be full of security problems, lacks many functions, hard to work with, and many other problems.

As I said he must have been desperate for the money so I let him keep it.

You are not going to find a real solution unless you have it custom built as scuttle has no admin at all and phpdug offers almost nothing...

Daamn...that sucks balls big time... coding something like it must be expensive and time consuming... hmm...I guess I will have to borrow money for this project ( Which I don't really like...

Depending upon the functions you want ... If you are looking to put in social groups, friends, and etc such as many of the big boys have then it could run into thousands to have a proper site coded... I do not mean free open source code but a properly built custom coded site.

Yeah mate, that's what I'm thinking too... At first it seemed like Pligg is very very convenient for me because I need a platform that allows to rate/review stuff and at the same time allows to have social networking features for people to share/connect with others. It is a big idea.

I hate the fact that I might need big money to start this.. loss of freedom and time, but I guess this is the price to pay.

Anyone else have any experience with similar things?

WordPress is great for traditional type sites with lots of content and the ability for user commenting. I use it as CMS on custom-designed sites for clients too, but that involves a pretty good technical knowledge to meet all your needs. A lot of plugins too and a large community.

Oh yeah, I use WP too and it can be nicely expanded but I don't really like that. It's an option but for a big project I think it might not be optimal. And I don't have lots of technical knowledge

      Thanx for input!

elgg or buddypress *might* be better options for you if you need more of the social bookmarking/networking functionality.

I looked into using Pligg a while back. Basically, their license SUCKS. If you make ANY mods whatsoever, you are required to distribute them to anybody who asks. It doesn't support an add-on architecture (or didn't back when I looked into it) and thus if you wanted to do anything differently, you needed to hack the code. If you're not a programmer, that means you've gotta hire someone. And THEN ... your code must be freely given to anybody who asks for it.

    Thanks, but no thanks.

Yes, and that's what I need. I found another one, Elgg. Looks similar to Pligg though....

I will get a hosting and install Elgg to see how it works.. then I will know if I use it or get one coded.
