Can You Capture an Undownloadable Video?

Of course I'm not talking about a video that you can download and save to your hard drive.

What's frustrating to me is how do you download (or capture) a video that you want to keep for information purposes, but it's not downloadable? Do you need to use a program like Camtasia to do this? Is it illegal to (essentially) copy it if the creator made it undownloadable?

So far, when I encounter these situations I've been writing down all the instructions on a notepad (manually) as I watch the video. It's very tedious and time consuming.

Anyone have a solution? Thanks guys.

Have you tried the DownloadHelper add-on for Firefox? I frequently download videos to watch later or for reference. I haven't come across one that was not downloadable.

any type of file you view is stored in your temporary windows folder.. its just tough to find.. but especially flash .swf files can be retrieved quite easily.

Can you tell me how to retrieve them? I'm a non-techie.

          Thanks

FireFox has a few plugins that will help you there. Ant.com toolbar is good one.

... the Safari Approach (from my original answer) works with Amazon S3 files, too.

Amazon offers a rather complicated protection mechanism, that is sometimes used and tries to prevent the copy / paste trick, ... but if one is fast in spotting the file, then copy & pasting, it still works ...

        tested ;-)

FireFox has plugins for that. Most videos have the audio embedded in them so thats should not be an issue. I just downloaded the videos from Jay Abram using the ant.com FF plugin.

... in Safari there is an activity window (alt+cmd+a)... one can spot the file and copy / paste the link into the download window (alt+cmd+l) ...

... similar can be done in firefox,
using developer plug-ins like firebug ... but i prefer the "safari way" ...

If you have xp and are using IE8 then just play the video onscreen, then open the tools menu, internet options, under browsing history select settings, then view files. This will open your temp internet folder, I usually sort by file size as the videos are the largest, just right click and copy and paste to destop or other suitable folder and you can rename it as desired. I don't think it works in vista but I found this info by using google and asking how to save a you tube video, it works with most web based videos including training videos. Hope that helps.
